About the Author

Meghan Nuttall Sayres is a tapestry weaver who has traveled in Turkey and Iran, where she has met with scholars, carpet weavers, dyemasters, and merchants to study the age-old techniques, symbolism, and Sufi poetry that infuse many rugs woven throughout the Middle East. Her debut novelAnahita’s Woven Riddle has been translated into several languages. It was chosen as an American Library Association (ALA) Top Ten Best Books, an American Booksellers Association Book Sense/Indie Pick, an ALA Amelia Bloomer Feminist Choice Book among other awards. Her most recent fiction is Night Letter, a companion novel to Anahita. They are both being released by Nortia Press in the Fall of 2012. Other books by Meghan include, Weaving Tapestry in Rural Ireland and Daughters of the Desert: Tales of Remarkable Women From the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Traditions (co-author), and she is editor of the anthology Love and Pomegranates: Artists and Wayfareres on Iran. I didn't know much about Persian culture or nomadic lifestyles, but I am interested in rugs and weaving. Even if I weren't, this would be a fascinating and engaging novel. It captures the confusion and emotions of young love well, too! In the process of reading this engaging novel, I got as a bonus an intriguing introduction to classical Persian poetry. I learned about whirling dervishes and Sufism, too. I read this on a cross-country trip and was hooked from start to finish!I should note that this is marked as a young adult novel, but it makes a good adult read, too. Highly recommended!

As a "Westerner" who has spent a fair bit of time in the Middle East and Azerbaijan, I can't think of a better book to introduce the customs and manner of thinking that pervades so much of the reasoning and poetry of that part of the world - which I love. I think this book is excellent not only for children or young adults; I think all would enjoy this delightful and interesting story. Could we please have more like it.

I had the privilege of living in Iran for five years in the 1970's and I fell in love with the people and the culture. This book was researched for 10 years before it was written and the details are highly accurate but it is much more than that. It is a beautiful loving story which could have only have been written by someone who knows and loves Iran. For this reason the author was invited to present her book at the First International Children's Book Festival in Kerman.Her work speaks to the qualities we identify as goodness that transcend all cultures and boundaries; it describes what we recognize as the qualities of compassion that we humans share, as well as the generosity, good naturedness and kindness that so predominate the common culture of the Iranian people at a time that a propoganda war has been mounted against Iran in a run up to another possible war. A book that puts Iranians in such a positive light and speaks of their past struggle for a constitutional monarchy in 1906 to curb the excessive power of tyranical monarchs and empower the elected parliament, their struggle against Tzarist Russian expansionism, their struggle between traditional ways and modern change, between nomadic life style versus settled, their struggle between material and spiritual values, all helps those ignorant of Iran to better understand the Iranian experience and to put a human face on Iran.Most of all this book makes the characters very believable...the struggles of a young girl against the social pressure to be married off in an arranged political union to someone she cannot love, which would benefit everyone in her tribe except her own chance at happiness, her struggles with the inevitable transition from childhood to adulthood, her first encounters with legitimate feelings of romantic love, her rivalry with her girl cousin, the humorous aspects of human existence, the admirable leadership qualities of her father, his fairness and courage to stand up against corruption, the self sacrificing loyalty of her childhood friend Daryioush, the noble qualities of the prince and the mystery of love at first sight which will always remain a mystery...In the end this book leaves you with a heart warming glow and it becomes a friend you want to spend time with and not put down until it is read. It is not a Polly Anna fairy tale but rather quite realistic and yet the good guys win and the bad guys are brought to justice in a comic rather than cruel way...and the theme of weaving the carpet from sheep to work of art runs through the whole story, dying it, tying it together and leaving no loose ends until they tie the knot...and by the way, it is a suspenseful tale and full of surprises which will keep you riveted to it until the very end...I highly recommend this book for the young and the young of heart,Brian H. An easy read that gives insight to the Estern Indian culture with an enjoyable story. Fun trying to guess which one she weaves into her rug.

This charming book was such fun to read. I was so happy that Anahita marriedthe man she did. I wish I could have seen the marriage rug she wove.

Very interesting and logical book. Everyone should read this (no...those coal jobs are not coming back, you cannot turn back time). People need to be realistic. Biggest lesson from the book........those who can adjust get by....those who cannot change with the times don't. One surprising thing in the book (at least to me) is that often "government intervention" doesn't help at all. Throwing money at cities to prop up some industries, etc. just doesn't work because sometimes you cannot predict what will be the next "big" thing, what will survive, what won't. Like so many other things, some things sound good on paper and for one reason or another just fail. Things, industries, etc. become obsolete over time and you have to be able to either retrain or adjust.

Thoughtful, smart, and important book. Interesting observations regarding job development as it relates to new industries and higher education among the workforce, which form brain hubs that define today’s economy.Only quibbles have to do with characterization of Berkeley and San Francisco. Being that I have lived in both cities for about a 15 year stretch, I know something about the history and culture of both. To begin with Berkeley is an island, one that neither follows or cares what others think. It is an impulsive and innovative community that would place economic considerations way behind a number of other socially motivated priorities—this is not to assume that it any way correctly measures such priorities at all.Now San Francisco is another case. East San Francisco is mentioned as a part of the city slated for light manufacturing in vain hopes that industry will come back. I’m sure the author is aware that that district has been “slated” for industrial business for a long, long time due to its proximity to the docks and the type of business needs that took place in that district. Gone are breweries like Hamms and bakeries like Wonder Bread. Forgotten are two million service men and women of WWII who were siphoned through the Bay Area to serve overseas and the numerous laborers who built and repaired the machinery, planes, and countless other necessities of war.San Francisco resisted the youth of Hait Ashburry, the gay and lesbian revolution, and at times the Google high tech world that has found a home in this great city. The youth culture got old, and Castro and beyond found a home after arduous struggles and final acceptance. And the Mission District has strongly resisted being bought out, and I imagine still is resisting it.In all cases we are talking about culture and traditions versus money. It then comes down to a set of values, and good ones happen over a long stretch of time.The author’s notions on creative and vibrant environments as magnets or not for development of economic hubs is naive. Employing Jimi Hendrix/Seattle as an example how creative types won’t necessarily gravitate to a metropolis based upon a creative vibe is utter nonsense. Hendrix,though born in Seattle, lived mostly in Europe and New York when he wasn’t touring. His studio Electric Lady Studio is still located in Greenwich Village. So, what does he have to do with Seattle and a creative vibe? Very curious. Should stick with what you know.

The new Geography of Jobs details the changing nature of US employment as production technology has changed. I saw this book as a reference from another book on the implications and dynamics of the way in which supply chains have migrated from domestically to internationally based. It is excellent and remains extremely relevant and even predictive from being published in 2013.In the new geography of jobs, author Enrico Moretti discusses how the nature of US jobs and manufacturing has been changing for the last 30 years. The economy is becoming service based and offshoring of manufacturing is the norm as production migrates to where labor is cheaper. The author details how the size of the manufacturing labor force has been in almost monotonic decline and how even high technology content goods manufacturing quickly moves offshore despite the US housing the intellectual property. The author discusses how this is the natural consequence of the value chain that has been created where the service sector value add is what the US has come to dominate whereas the manufacturing value add is where low cost labor countries tend to have comparative advantage. The author then spends time on describing what high value service sector jobs entail, describing a job at Pixar for example. On the flipside of the decline in manufacturing is the growth in services and the author shows the growth in jobs associated with scientific R&D, software, pharmaceuticals and the internet- here the charts are the inverse and monotonically increasing. Unfortunately the magnitudes don't necessarily add up so therein lies part of the problem but the point is that the nature of where the US has a comparative advantage is changing and the areas of job growth vs decline are structural. The author spends a lot of time discussing how these sectors which are productive have huge spillovers to the surrounding areas and details the wages of base service jobs in areas of high vs low productivity and the ranges are enormous. The author spends a lot of time on how as the nature of jobs demanded is changing the geography of jobs is changing and gravitating towards the coasts where there are more tech related or finance related areas. The author discusses how the forces of agglomeration are strong as productivity feeds on itself as talented individuals come into close contact and as the geography of employment is changing as well as the education levels required to fill those labor gaps is changing the country is becoming polarized in opportunity set.The New Geography of Jobs discusses what labor transitions are occurring in the US right now and their effects on prices and opportunities. It gives good perspective on why the country is increasingly divided and see the world so different in opportunity set. The author discusses the economic consequences of the changes we are seeing and gives some policy advice on how to address them. One thing is hard to argue though which is that what value add the US can offer the global economy is fundamentally different to what it was 40 years ago and many of the changes which are creating conflict are structural. This is a must read to better understand the economic consequences of the changing nature of the US comparative advantage and what the country needs to consider when trying to address the negative consequences to certain subsets of the population who are most affected. The continued need of the US to focus on its human capital rather than its manufacturing capital though is almost a given.

I volunteered to teach basic ballet for our camp at Burning Man, and then panicked when I realized that I was more or less completely unqualified for the job -- which is to say, I'm a dancer, and I dance reasonably well, and have often been asked to lead a warm-up or demonstrate things in class, but that doesn't necessarily translate to anything resembling teaching ability. More importantly, perhaps, I realized that as someone who began dancing as a very young child, I really had very little idea what it might be like approaching ballet from the perspective of a completely raw adult novice, and thus could probably use some insight into how to address the kinds of challenges faced by true adult beginners.This book, which is really geared towards teaching the adult novice, was a life-saver. Kassing has a good sense of what adult beginners bring to the table; she also makes excellent use of clear, well-composed photographic illustrations. A diverse group of male and female dancers are represented, as well, which was nice (as a guy who dances, it's particularly nice to see guys in the pictures).I feel like I shouldn't have to say that this book is not a substitute for a strong dance background, nor (if you're a novice looking for a way to learn on your own) is it a substitute for a real teacher -- but if you're a reasonably-experienced dancer and you find yourself in need of some pointers on how to run an organized class for a gaggle of random adult beginners, Kassing does a pretty good job setting you on the right track.I suggest adding an additional well-respected guide to technique (Grant's _Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet_, published by Dover, is one inexpensive option), as they do a good job explaining the minutiae of individual elements of technique, and it's a good idea to have more than one resource (and more than one way to explain things to students).Ultimately, I got horribly sick and thus only got to teach about half of my classes, but I felt like Kassig's book prepared me quite well for that particular challenge.

I purchased this book after I was asked to teach a recreational adult/teen beginning ballet class. It provides a good overview of how to structure a class and how to build on lessons. There is also extensive discussion on teaching the basic concepts of ballet (beyond the actual steps) such as posture, alignment, turnout, counterpull, distribution of weight, etc. I also liked the fact that the authors provide suggestions for teaching images and teaching cues to use. I will definitely continue to use it as a reference, however this book was clearly intended for those teaching ballet at the college level. There is a great deal of discussion on how to structure written examinations, written assignments, and performance tests which was not relevant for my needs, though others may find this aspect quite helpful.

This book goes into great detail on the basics of ballet technique and the best ways to try to teach it to young or beginning ballet students. Nice, detailed information on the most basic, common steps as well as detailed theory on the various ballet movements, etc.

This book is great for the beginning teacher. I liked the suggested order and combination of barre excercises going from beginning to more difficult. Center work is also covered with suggestions of how to build a routine for an adagio and an allegro. It's a wonderful reference book and can be used in teaching adults.

As a new dance teacher, I have ordered several books and other resources on teaching. This book is definitely a good purchse - it basically outlines class format and what should be covered for various levels of beginners. I feel it also applies to intermediate students as well. Lots of pictures and descriptions make it easy to understand. I would recommend it for any ballet teacher.

This book was written to be used in an academic setting but is an excellent resource for teaching beginning ballet in general. I was a dancer for many years, but I am just now getting in to teaching. Like the authors said, it is good to get a review because it is a long time since I was a beginner. The book helps to clarify what beginners can and can't do. I just skipped over the parts about tailoring your classes to teaching in high school/college since it didn't apply.

This book employs an academic approach to teaching ballet. It is ideal for the school setting or for getting an overall teaching perspective. It might also be useful for teaching beginner adults.Perhaps books such as Teaching Ballet Creatively: A pre ballet primer is better suited to the dance studio setting, particularly if you are teaching the very young. However as a teacher it is always best to have a good complement of books as a general resource.

I purchased this book because I was going to be starting teaching ballet to young children after being out of ballet for awhile. It was a terrific resource for reminding me about all the terms and pronounciations. It also gave a great outline for how to structure the class timewise, as how to progress through the steps as the weeks went on. It was a great buy!

I think I’ve read them all. The peaceful parent. The mindful parent. The connected parent etc... this was my favorite out of all of them. The author gives really great examples of different behaviors and how you can go about them. This is not a book to read if you just want your kids to obey but this is a book if you want to have a real relationship with your kids. There is also a chapter on self care and working on your own past issues. I believe this book has it all. Along with “5 love languages of children” this is all my parenting library needs.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith's book is excellent as it provides not only information concerning why it is necessary to be gentle in disciplining children but demonstrates practical techniques to accomplish this task. She cited Banduras studies on role modelling that is the most important task as a parent and is not easy for those who were not parented well or maltreated as children. This is especially important in discussing the dangers of using corporal punishment. She has a chapter about school discipline which is timely as it is still legal in 19 US states to use corporal punishment, usually paddling on school children, with disastrous results overrepresented in punishing disabled, autistic or minority children. Congress over the last few years has rejected several bills to make this illegal and is currently rejecting a similar bill. I can vouch for the authors skill in advocating for gentle discipline without physical punishment. I have 32 years in this field of child protection and have written articles and a book on the subject. Her book richly deserves 5 stars.

One of the most life changing books I've ever read.

This book offered nothing of use. Your child is crying for your attention-guess what, they need your attention! Your child gets 1 hour of screen time per day and goes over, take time away the next day to make up for it! For lack of a better word, duh! I could not connect with the author at any point in time reading this book and I have read many child development/discipline books over the years. She also claims to have the answers for how to handle large groups of school children, albeit she has absolutely no experience being in the public education sector. This book is complete and utter garbage, but I try to keep as much out of the landfill as possible, so I returned it.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a gift to parents, grandparents and all who need to learn more of how to have a positive effect on our children as they grow and face the workings of the social landscape and world!

Simple read. If only every parent would connect and raise their child with gentle discipline!! Children’s needs would be met and the world would be a better place.

Enjoyed reading this book and learning about the Gentle Discipline method. Part of the way into the book we began using some of the techniques with our three year old son and immediately saw benefits. I didn't find all of the proposed techniques as useful or practical (namely, the techniques in either the violence prevention chapter or the parental anger chapter). In addition, I found some of the author's positions on the value of homework to be wildly different from my own experiences growing up. Nevertheless, reading the book on the whole altered our approach to dealing with a misbehaving toddler. My wife and I are glad we read it and will be recommending it to other parents.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith delivers a scientific and empathetic approach to parenting. An interest in shaping people, not just behaviors, out of our children shines through her writing.

Clearly, there was no editor.The size is pamphlet thin, the content is so broad even the most cursory scan of Wikipedia yields better information. The style of writing and the briefness leads me to believe this might just be an essay assignment some precocious high schooler has passed off as a book. In which case, well done you! I can't begin to explain how this book touched my heart! Although I am a woman, reading about Joseph makes me want to improve on living a life of integrity and forgiveness.I originally purchased this book in hardcover to give to a friend because he reminded me so much of the Joseph that I've often read about in the Bible. Well, through circumstance with my friend reading it, I decided to download it to my Kindle so I could read it as well. It was hard to put down!Joseph was an amazing man! I went through every emotion while reading this book from laughing to crying to ultimately falling in love with with Joseph's heart after God.I highly recommend this book, and give warning .....be prepared for changes within, it will grab your heart and make you want to be a better person! enJOY the read!!

This book is one of a series and I have read two others. Charles Swindoll is a great storyteller. He has the reader read the Scripture that the story of Joseph is based on. It is done in sections. Within each section he explains the background of life time in the Bible including their customs and Jewish beliefs. Then he applies this to modern every day examples to help you in your life as you learn about Joseph.

Swindoll delivers again with one of the greatest (prelude to Christ) characters of the old testament. his telling of Joseph while lacking some of the more interesting details per Jasher and Jubilees, is one of the best I've ever read. when it comes to biblical biographies, Swindoll always seems to come through brilliantly!

I really enjoyed this book about Joseph. Although I was familiar with the story of Joseph it gave lots of insights that helped me understand the story better. There are things you know from reading the Biblical story but this gave additional insights that really brought his character to life! There are cultural things explained that are not apparent to us because our culture is so different.

I'm now reading Joseph, and I've already read two other character studies in this series by Chuck Swindoll. I've gotten a lot out of all of them. Swindoll does a good job of identifying why the person was and acted the way they did. And he draws many parellels to our lives today. In this book I've learned a lot about the family life Joseph came from: he was a favored son of a passive father. But it's not just the facts that are recounted. Swindoll goes back to study Joseph's father, Jacob, and the behavior and events that shaped him. We learn the impact of all that history on Joseph's life. When the jealous brothers eventually sold him into slavery, this book explores the works God began to do in his life and the immeasurable faith Joseph must have had in order to sustain him through the tough years that followed. I simply enjoy Swindoll's attitude and style. He pulls a lot of wisdom out of the verses in the Bible and helps bring it to life. You can easily imagine yourself in Joseph's shoes and how you would have responded. You learn the lessons of trusting in God through difficult situations and the difference that YOUR attitude can have while you wait.

This book on the life of Joseph, has given me insight into what dynamic faith can do in a person's life. It is a story of perseverance by one man to do the right thing in spite of what will happen to him....and his reward for continuing steadfastly to be used for God's purpose, in spite of difficulties and discouragement; .Chuck Swindoll is one of my favorite authors and his series on Great Lives from God's Word is stellar. Joseph is beset by many of the problems that afflict us today...and some that none of us would ever think of being afflicted with!...but whose faith is a model for us all and shows what God will do in our own lives if we will but have a faith like that of Joseph.

Chuck Swindoll's peek into the life of Joseph will make you look at each Biblical character differently. Joseph's was much more than a "From the pit to the palace" story as one of grace, forgiveness, gentleness, love, and family. This book provides an in depth look into the life of Joseph as well as Jacob his father. I look forward to reading others in the series.

Great book because Joseph was a biblical titan. The author does him justice and "preachy" detours are few enough not to be problematic. (I'm in favor of preaching--just let Joseph speak for himself rather than occasional "now where is this coming from".
