The Wartime Sisters: A Novel, by Lynda Cohen Loigman

Review

“Loigman’s second novel portrays a sampling of the women whose roles were pivotal during the wartime manufacturing boom…[and] highlights historic advances for women.”―Kirkus “With a perceptive lens on the challenges of whittling away grievances that have built up over years, The Wartime Sisters is a powerful pressure cooker of a family drama."―Booklist “With measured, lucid prose, Loigman tells a moving story of women coming together in the face of difficulties, both personal and global, and doing anything to succeed.”―Publishers Weekly“Readers will enjoy the heartfelt picture of women's daily life during wartime through the eyes of two extraordinary sisters. Recommended for historical fiction fans of Pam Jenoff and Kate Morton.”―Library Journal “Historical fiction fans will love Lynda Cohen Loigman's The Wartime Sisters―a fresh take on the World War II novel. Sisters Ruth and Millie find themselves back in each other's lives after a long estrangement when Millie and her son turn up on Ruth's doorstep needing a place to stay. While the two help the war effort by working at an armory factory in Massachusetts, their past secrets bubble to the surface.”―Real Simple“Ruth and Millie may be sisters, but they've never been close. But when World War Two brings them together again, they find themselves further apart than ever. Can they ever break free of their childhood roles? And will they ever come together when they need each other most? The Wartime Sisters is an emotionally honest story about the complexity of family.”―Popsugar "The Wartime Sisters is an indictment of how we judge others by their looks. Lynda Loigman explores the roles women played during World War II and won freedom. Never ever the role of women during World War II was explained in such a brilliant way in a book of fiction." ―The Washington Book Review"One of Loigman’s greatest strength is her ability to hint subtly that there is something more, something secret she hasn’t revealed about the sister’s relationships with each other. Just stick with me, she seems to imply, and I’ll let you know in good time what those secrets are. Be patient, she does." ―The Jerusalem Post“This touching book tells the story of two sisters who are reunited during World War II. The problem (other than, you know, war)? One sister is living the "good" life as an officer's wife, while the other is a factory worker ― causing understandable tension that strains their bond. Read this, and then give your own sister a call.” ―Woman's Day “Lynda Cohen Loigman’s commanding voice and crafty prose have been likened to celebrated author Alice Hoffman.”―Westport Magazine“A slew of recent novels like "The Lilac Girls," "The Chilbury Ladies' Choir" and "Dear Mrs. Bird," give women's experience of World War II its fictional due. The latest entrant in the field, from the author of "The Two-Family House," follows Brooklyn sisters Ruth and Millie through the conflict, as both wind up working for the war effort at a Massachusetts Armory.” –Newsday.com“The Wartime Sisters is a heartfelt and poignant portrait of the complex bond between sisters, how our childhood roles define us as adults, and what dire consequences that can have, especially in times of war. The Wartime Sisters shows the strength of women on the home front: to endure, to fight, and to help each other survive.” ―Jenna Blum, New York Times and international bestselling author of The Lost Family and Those Who Save Us“Fresh off her stunning debut The Two Family House, Lynda Cohen Loigman returns with The Wartime Sisters, an evocative home front tale set against the backdrop of the Springfield Armory during World War II. Through stoic, stubborn Ruth and her beautiful younger sister Millie, Loigman skillfully chronicles the complex sibling bonds and rivalries, the secrets we keep and truths that set us free. Loigman’s strong voice and artful prose earn her a place in the company of Alice Hoffman and Anita Diamant, whose readers should flock to this wondrous new book.” ―Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Orphan’s Tale“A riveting tale of sibling rivalry and the magnetic dissonance of family, filled with heart-stopping truths that are both tender and wise. One of my favorite books of the year.” ―Fiona Davis, national bestselling author of The Masterpiece“In her latest novel, Loigman once again deftly explores the complexities, heartbreaks, and fierce endurance of family bonds. Even amid the great tension and fears of the Second World War, The Wartime Sisters reminds the reader that the harshest battles are often fought here at home, with those we love and are meant to trust most. A stirring tale of loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of long-buried secrets.” ―Kristina McMorris, New York Times bestselling author of The Edge of Lost and Sold on a Monday“Complex and intricately woven, The Wartime Sisters is truly everything I love in a novel. Beautifully written, rich in historical detail, and anchored by two strong women who must reconcile their past―and their secrets―in order to survive. Loigman is a master storyteller and this novel had me from its very first page.” ―Alyson Richman, international bestselling author of The Lost Wife and The Velvet Hours“The Wartime Sisters by Lynda Cohen Loigman is a powerful and moving story of secrets, friendship, and sisterhood. In Ruth and Millie, whom we follow from their childhood in Brooklyn to their entwined lives as young mothers at a wartime armory in Springfield, Loigman masterfully portrays the complicated sister relationship. Beautifully written, emotionally charged, and rich with historical detail, this novel, and these sisters, will stay with me long after I turned the last page.” ―Jillian Cantor, author of Margot and The Lost Letter“The story drew me in from the very beginning…The heartfelt and utterly engrossing story tackles such issues as sex discrimination, unequal treatment of children, and the repercussions of keeping secrets and holding grudges. Ultimately, the book is a triumphant tale of healing and is a fine addition to literature set in the World War II era.” ―Historical Novels Review

Sisters with secrets. If they only knew what the other was thinking. Or, rather, keeping. This is Lynda Cohen Loigman’s novel THE WARTIME SISTERS. Loved equally by their parents but treated differently. Expectations are set from the get-go and their lives take on a pattern. Harboring resentment becomes the standard.A glimpse into the past of a tenuous period. Loigman tells a tale with intricate details of family life – how tense the world was during the time of war from different perspectives and a unique take of historical fiction at an armory where women were holding down the fort on the home front.Reading the Yiddish spoken by the parents, which is woven throughout the story and reminiscent of a generation gone by, brings a touch of nostalgia, particularly if you grew up with Jewish immigrant grandparents.THE WARTIME SISTERS is a story with characters who are real enough to tug at your heartstrings, that demonstrates what happens when trust is broken, the powerful destruction of secrets, and that finding strength from within is possible.

I loved this book. It really hit home for me with the setting being the Springfield Armory in Springfield MA, the town over from where I grew up and currently live. I loved the story of two sisters and theirs struggles with each other all throughout their lives. From their youth, there was always a rivalry between Ruth and Millie, Ruth being the brains and Millie being the beauty. Ruth blamed Millie for many failed relationships in her youth and brought this jealousy into their adulthood, she wanted nothing more that to leave Millie behind in Brooklyn. Their Mother's influence did not help matters. Once the parents are lost to them, the bonds of sisterhood are tested throughout the book. As an only child, it is fascinating to see how two siblings cut from the same cloth could be so different.I loved learning more about the Armory at wartime and what a powerful presence it had in Springfield. How important it was for women to step up and take these manufacturing jobs to support our soldiers on the front. The characters are developed wonderfully and the author switches back and forth between two time periods in Brooklyn and Springfield. Secrets are revealed and we are drawn in to see what will happen next to the two sisters. Additional characters, such as Arietta the singing cook at the Armory, also add so much to the story. As well as familiar places from my youth like Johnson's Bookstore, Steigers Tea Room and Mercolino's Bakery! The author's note at the end explains how much research she did and how true to life this book was at this time in our history, changing only a few timelines to keep her book flowing. I enjoyed every minute of it and learning more about the historic gem that is right in my own backyard.

Lynda Cohen Loigman's seamless writing style pulled me in on page one. Her careful descriptions, meticulous pacing, and driving plot, create an exquisitely crafted novel. The first half of the novel sets up the story through brilliant character development. From here, Loigman picks up the pace so that I found it hard to put the book down. The four main female characters weave their way throughout the book in short, crisp chapters. This is a story that pulls at the heart. It steps gently but with an outright awareness of what drives the human spirit to inflict pain but ultimately find compassion and forgiveness.

Millie and Ruth were very different growing up and didn't have the best relationship. As adults they are brought back together as a direct result of the war and their relationship is still tenuous when someone from their past returns and threatens everything. The Wartime Sisters is a refreshing take on WWII historical fiction. Based entirely in the US it gives a very different and lighter viewpoint than other novels of this genre. A combination of the incredibly well-researched history and Loigman's masterful descriptions made me feel like I was stepping back in time. I especially enjoyed how the different viewpoints allow the reader to see the same situation from multiple perspectives and highlighted how easy it is to misread the intentions of others.

I adored this story of two estranged sisters, Millie and Ruth who try to find their way back to each other while living and working at the Springfield Armory during WWII. The history was fascinating and the characters were complex and incredibly well-drawn - I cannot recommend it more!

Having read the Author’s first book, I looked forward to her second. I enjoy her writing and thought the story although not complicated showed a truism how sisters, friends and family disguise their feelings too often and for insecure reasons. Well told you will love the background where Ruth and Millie become true sisters of the heart

This was such a great book! I loved the first one by this author so I was excited to read this one! She did not disappoint! I also enjoyed reading the author's notes at the end explaining how she came to write the story! I highly recommend this beautiful novel to everyone!

I loved everything about this book. I found the setting and historical element fascinating -learning about the Springfield Armory. The writing and structure were masterful. Great second novel by Loigman. Can't wait for the third!

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: Jenny Lawson follows up her marvelous debut Let’s Pretend This Never Happened with her determination to be furiously happy: she will seize the strangest and most glorious moments of her life while she stares down her depression, severe anxiety, avoidant personality disorder, and much more—and dares it to stop her. Furiously Happy is not only a battle cry but a delirious seesaw of a memoir. One moment you swoop upward as Lawson relates her attempts to hold a koala in Australia while wearing a koala costume and explains her quirky love for taxidermied animals (who must be dead from natural causes only), and you’re giggling like a three-year-old. Then your stomach drops like an artillery shell when Lawson exposes the dark side of her mental illnesses: trying not to cut herself and holing up in her bedroom for days on end. The ups and downs make this a difficult book to read all in one go. However, Lawson uses both her hilarious and heartbreaking episodes to camouflage so many life lessons and biting observations. (A poignant example: when cancer victims don’t respond to medication, no one blames the cancer victim; people with mental illness don’t get the same respect.) This is a book you’ll want to savor. Whether or not you too suffer from depression, you’ll turn the last page fired up by Lawson’s conviction that you can be furiously happy no matter what life hurls at you.--Adrian Liang

Review

“Jenny made me laugh so hard I feared for my safety! I think that's how she was able to get past my defenses and make me feel more okay about myself.” ―Allie Brosh, author of Hyperbole and a Half“You'll laugh, wince, writhe in discomfort, cry, then laugh again. You might even feel the need to buy a raccoon. But the two things you'll never do is doubt Jenny's brilliance or her fearlessness when it comes to having honest discussions about mental illness, shame, and the power of human resilience. She's changing the conversation one rented sloth at a time.” ―Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW, author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller, Daring Greatly“I freaked strangers out by snort-laughing on the subway and in restaurants. I can't stop talking about this book to friends. I'll shut up now and let you resume your life but buy this book. It's AMAZING.” ―Paul Fischer, author of A Kim Jong-Il Production“The Bloggess writes stuff that actually is laugh-out-loud, but you know that really you shouldn't be laughing and probably you'll go to hell for laughing, so maybe you shouldn't read it. That would be safer and wiser.” ―Neil Gaiman“Even when I was funny, I wasn't this funny.” ―Augusten Burroughs, author of Running with Scissors and This Is How“Lawson's self-deprecating humor is not only gaspingly funny and wonderfully inappropriate; it allows her to speak...in a real and raw way.” ―O, The Oprah Magazine“[Lawson] writes with a rambling irreverence that makes you wish she were your best friend.” ―Entertainment Weekly“Take one part David Sedaris and two parts Chelsea Handler and you'll have some inkling of the cockeyed humor of Jenny Lawson...[She] flaunts the sort of fearless comedic chops that will make you spurt Diet Coke through your nose.” ―Parade

Ever get stuck in a conversation with someone that thinks they're hilarious and original but really they're just immature and likely exaggerating every tale they tell? And you can't get a word in between their ramblings to end the conversation? and they're incapable of reading your body language and are oblivious to how uncomfortable you are?If you'd pay for that experience then this book is for you. Otherwise save your money.

Last year I bought this author's hilarious LET'S PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED when it was a Daily Deal and enjoyed it enormously. I didn't know that she had written a second book until it showed as a Daily Deal and I grabbed it and stopped reading the book I was in the middle of to wolf it down. (Figuratively speaking, of course.)Her first book is a memoir of her bizarre childhood. It's presented in a comic manner and I suspect that many readers will be upset to learn that her life hasn't been non-stop laughs. Not that this one isn't wet-your-pants funny in parts, but Ms. Lawson's main goal here is to discuss her life-long battle with depression and she does so in a way that's peculiarly her own. (And sometimes just peculiar.)Mental illness is the Final Frontier of medicine and we still can't fully convinced ourselves that it's not "all in your head." Of course, it IS "all in your head" but that doesn't make it less debilitating or easier to treat. The societal costs of untreated or poorly treated mental illness in terms of suicide, unemployment or underemployment, incarceration, etc. has never been calculated. Maybe we just don't want to think about it.This is an inside look at chronic depression from a woman who has struggled all of her life and will continue to do so. Barring a miracle cure, there are no happy endings for those with chronic depression. But there can be happy days and hours and minutes in between the misery and Jenny valiantly grabs every one of them and savors it. If you have ever suffered from depression or if you love someone who has, you should read this book.I remember reading LET'S PRETEND and thinking that it must have been uncomfortable growing up with a father whose idea of parenting was waking his little daughters up and telling them that he had brought them a pet squirrel. The "pet" was road-kill that Dad had gutted and was using as a hand puppet. Not exactly the sort of childhood memory that makes it into the eulogy, right? But it turns out that having a taxidermist father has some advantages after all. When her stuffed road-kill raccoon suffers a Las Vegas-related accident, Pop was able to fashion new hands and feet for it. [Incidentally, road-kill isn't really a literary "theme" in these books. It's just something that Texas has a LOT of.]This family has been given enough lemons to keep a lemonade stand going indefinitely. I admire this lady (and her wonderful husband!) more than I can say. She is a beacon of hope for those who live in the shadows. God bless her.

I've read amazing reviews about this book and that's why I bought it. Not my cup of tea, I fail to find it funny or entertaining. For me it's just the author trying too hard to be funny.

I loved this book. I'm not one who readily laughs out loud, but this had me giggling helplessly. Not once or twice, but a LOT. And I'm mentally ill, too, so this book was a wonderful vacation for me from having to deal with stuff I don't have enough spoons for. I never encountered anyone who thinks in tangential, progressively absurd streams of consciousness before, JUST LIME ME!!And I need to respond to reviews that were bitchy about the author's "luxury" of not being able to get out of bed, and what was perceived as name-dropping: Mental illness is not all created equal. I only say that because my FIRST impulse was to scold those idiots for judging a sick person by well-person rules, but then I thought that was mean. Maybe they are just less unwell. Personally, I've had days when I couldn't leave my cocoon, and there's nothing luxurious about it. It's hell. And hey, wow, a famous person knows some other famous people, who were so cool they helped her! That's name-dropping?Maybe if you're healthy, or if you're in denial, or you're just a judgmental boob, this book won't be funny or work at all for you. I feel sorry for you, because Jenny (I feel like we're on a first-name basis now), is a kick-ass, genuine, smart, hilarious survivor you'd be blessed by if you had any sense.

CAUTION - do not read this on an airplane when people are trying to sleep around you. do not drink water while reading. you will laugh out loud and wake people up and/or (probably both) spit out your water onto your kindle! happened to me. just a warning!Jenny Lawson's second book does not disappoint. If you are a fan of funny things, or if you have suffered from mental illnesses (or know someone who does) this will hit you in all the right places. it will tickle your funnybone, and at times it might make you tear up. i had quite a range of emotions just in the first few chapters. in fact, i haven't even finished it yet but i am confident that it deserves more than 5 stars. i am going to write a note to Amazon, picketing for more than 5 stars! - this is at least 6 stars worth of funny!!!!you do not need to read Jenny's first book to jump into this one, in case you were wondering, however, i strongly suggest reading it to get a lot of references that she discusses and to get a better background on her family and upbringing. it will give you the back story on Beyonce the chicken, and also taxidermy. you may even want to head over to her blog (thebloggess.com) for a little taste of her humor and insight.i also suggest to read the entire book including the preface and such that you might normally skip over. this book is great, and i cannot wait for her next one!!!! i also suggest getting the hard copy over kindle because i am a little mad that i don't have the cute Rory cover to look at!PS- tip- when Jenny travels to do book signings and such, she often stops in the airport bookstores and signs copies! follow her on instagram to see where she is doing mystery signings to get yourself a backup copy!

Save your money. The author tries desperately to be funny and falls short about 98% of the time. Her insistence that “crazy is cute” is at best annoying, and at worst really very offensive to all the people who don’t get to make fun of their mental illnesses. We chose this book for book club and every person, to the person, hated it.

Review

"This book is one of the best resources for students simply because it eliminates the steep learning curve of Maya while cohesively applying the fundamental principles of animation." --Ron Pucherelli, Animator, PDI DreamWorks "How to Cheat in Maya 2012 is required reading for my animation classes and is a valuable reference for all animators." --Cheryl Cabrera, Professor of Character Animation,University of Central Florida "This book is an invaluable resource, because it focuses almost exclusively on using the animation tools in Maya. One heck of an addition to your animation library!" --Kyle Mohr, Animator, Pixar Canada

This is my fourth year using Maya, and this book has a wealth of information. The video/project tutorials assist in quick references and techniques to navigate the program. You should be mindful how to apply these techniques to your individual projects. All graphics are legible and easy to understand; the character models change with each issue.

This is a great book with lots of helpful info but I bought the Kindle edition to carry with me on my iPad and the formatting SUCKS!!! It is all screwed up. One page will have section 1, then 4, then 3 then 6... makes no sense. Don't you guys check your work? It does have great info but I feel cheated that it's so hard to read.

Exceeds expectations... clear screen shots, no disc (as expected) but website downloads (as expected) is far more sensible IMHO.Revised for Maya 2014 and new features used in exercises. Lot of tips and asides from an authority on animation.Loving this book. :-)

Garbage, needed for animation 1 class and passed it on to next class for free because it is the cheapest and doesn’t realte to 2018 maya; I’d required for class, get it as low cost as you can because it’s not helpful at all.

Very helpful and easy to follow

A really good book if you are starting to animate in Maya.

Very helpful guide telling you secrets and tips to get the most out of your animations

i love that book..
