About the Author

Ben Hogan discovered golf as a fifteen-year-old caddie. He turned pro at seventeen, joined the tour full-time as a nineteen-year-old in 1931, and has won nine pro majors. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he is one of only four golfers to win all four professional majors. At forty-one, he won five of six tournaments, including the Masters, U.S. Open and the British Open. Hogan died at eighty-four in 1997 in his home in Fort Worth.

Ben Hogan's swing was the template for the modern swing. For a piece of golf history, this book is still a worthwhile endeavor to read. Although some clubs are not widely used such as the Brassie, 2 wood, 4 wood, Hogan's advice regarding the fundamentals and strategies still stand the test of time.The book is well illustrated with helpful captions, although some drawings are misleading and should not be mimicked. Hogan was not known for his putting and the putting chapter is not very useful.Reading into the mindset of the champion and the vignettes of golfers in his era, are quite fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed the historical perspective.This book still stands as a classic in the Silver Age of Golf. I highly recommend reading it.

I studied Hogan's 5 Fundamentals written in the 1940's till I wore it out and true to his word I was a bogey golfer after less than a year. Now at 69 I am again reeducating myself in the form and mental side using this book on Power Golf. I did not know it existed until I began to look for additional material that he had written. As usual with Hogan he has distilled the core points in such a way that if used and incorporated your game will inprove tremendously. The equipment, balls, etc can change but the fundamentals of a classic swing were first written and explained by Hogan and they will never change. Great material to add to you understanding and game.

... even though it was written before Hogan's "Five Lessons." Power Golf addresses some issues that Five Lessons does not, like putting and sandplay, for example. However, in my opinion it would be advisable to digest Five Lessons first, and then open up your game with Power Golf, in that order. Five Lessons will instruct and help you discipline yourself on the fundamental swing, and Power Golf will liberate you further. Myself, I was reassured by Hogan in Power Golf when he gave me permission to "go ahead and hit it as hard as you can" when it comes to the driver... he says you might be a little wild at first, but once you "groove your swing," you'll be glad you've been swinging with power because that's the point of a driver... I had always been a little hesitant to let it rip, but now I've been smacking it but good! Thanks again, Mr. Hogan.

Save your money and buy "Hogan's Five Lessons of Golf" instead. This book was written later in his life when he finally settled on his "swing", it covers all the important points in his "Power Golf" book, only better, because he is confident with his "swing" by this time and is better at conveying his thoughts; and ... its a few bucks cheaper, to boot!

Best golf book ever. Reading this book truly changed my entire game. I was a 14 handicap and with just the grip change alone I started hitting twice the greens in regulation in my rounds. 6 months later I am now a 10 handicap. Ben Hogan was the best, this helps you get a repeatable swing that you can work on.

This book, intended for golfers who want to improve their game, was perfect for me.Everything in it has helped me in my golden years. I wished i had it when i was young, it could have improved my game.

Okay, it's not in the same league as 5 lessons, but it's still a good read. Definitely worth adding to your golf library. Wishing for a digital version, but for now, paperback will be fine. Get it and improve your long game.

This is a good read. Expands on Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons." Both books helped my game.

Recently, a popular mystery writer of today called this the "greatest mystery novel of all time." Ms. Tey died in 1952 at the age of 56, so right away,. we know this is a much different mystery than we're used to reading these days.By today's standards, it starts slowly, The main character, Recuperating from an injury received during a chase after a thug, Inspector Alan Grant is flat on his back throughout the novel. Two or three other characters drop in from time to time to bring him information that he needs to solve the crime. Which, by the way, occurred in the late 15th century. In short, the book has some of the characteristics that fiction-writing advisors tell aspiring authors never to do. The inciting incident is the gift of a picture of a long dead king, Richard the Third, for example.So it's not a book for everyone, OK? Alan Grant becomes intrigued with the portrait, and decides to find out if Richard really did murder his two young nephews. For hundreds of years history has said he did it. (Or had it done.) But are the historians right?I've loved this novel most of my reading life. Try it. If you're an aspiring writer, you'll learn something. If you like being challenged, you'll learn something about the way history becomes fact. And if you're a general reader of mysteries, this one is a gem.

I first read The Daughter of Time long ago in my callow youth. I can't recall much about that first reading experience. I don't think it made much of an impression on me. I was not well-versed in English history and knew little of the Plantagenets, the Wars of the Roses, or the Tudors except what I had gleaned from Shakespeare, so there was very little background for my understanding of what Josephine Tey was doing with this novel.Since that long ago time, I have read dozens of books about that period of history, especially during the past couple of years when it has been something of an obsession of mine. The result is that I'm now much better equipped to follow Tey's plot and the reasoning of her protagonist Inspector Alan Grant.When I ran across a reference to her book recently, I was intrigued and decided it was time to read it again. I'm very glad that I did.The plot of the book is that Inspector Alan Grant has been seriously injured in a fall while chasing a miscreant and is now bedridden in the hospital with a broken leg and injuries to his spine. He must lie flat on his back. He is extremely bored.In order to divert him, his friends have been bringing him piles of books, but he can't get interested in them. One of his friends, an actress, knowing of his fascination with faces, brings him pictures of several historical figures who have mysteries attached to them. Most of the pictures do not pique his interest, but finally one of them does capture his imagination. It is a copy of the famous portrait of Richard III.Grant knows little about Richard III except what he remembers from Shakespeare which is, basically, that he killed his two nephews, the "Princes in the Tower," and that he died on Bosworth Field calling for a horse, but, as a student of faces and one whose career depends on being able to read faces, he begins to doubt, while studying the portrait of Richard, that this man was a murderer. He determines to conduct an investigation, four hundred years after the fact, to determine the accuracy of the charges against the man.His actress friend is delighted to have found something that will occupy Grant's mind and distract him from his predicament. What he needs is someone to do research for him and she happens to know just the person, a young American friend of hers who has an interest in history. Soon he is introduced to Brent Carradine and the two form an alliance and a working partnership in search of the truth.The two pore over history books and historical accounts of events of the late 15th century, but they soon discover that the most famous accounts of the period - that of Sir Thomas More, for example - were not contemporaneous but were actually written later, during the Tudor period. Since the Tudors were mortal enemies of Richard, can their accounts really be trusted? Grant, the consummate detective, doesn't think so.At length, the two investigators find that none of the reports that were actually written during the time of Richard's life refer to the death of the two princes and that there is evidence that the mother of the two remained in a friendly relationship with Richard and that her daughters continued to attend events at his court. None of that seems to be the action of a mother or a family who considered Richard to be the murderer of their sons and brothers. Grant and Carradine come to the conclusion that the princes were, in fact, still alive in the Tower throughout Richard's reign.So, what happened to them? Were they killed, and, if so, who killed them?Grant decides to follow the clues, as he would in any murder investigation, to try to uncover the culprit. The first question he asks is, who stood to gain from the princes' death?It wouldn't have been Richard, since after his brother Edward IV's death, Parliament had declared his children with Elizabeth Woodville as illegitimate because there had been an earlier, undissolved marriage with another woman. But there were other children, those of his brother George, who stood ahead of Richard in line to become king, and yet those children continued to live and thrive.After Richard's death, Henry VII, the first of the Tudors, rescinded all of that and made the Woodville children legitimate again because he wished to marry the oldest of them, the young Elizabeth. In short order, he also sent the children's mother (his mother-in-law) to a convent to live out her days. He also began to systematically rid the government and the aristocracy of the various Woodville relatives who had permeated it during the Yorkist reigns. No mention is made of the princes.Grant forms the theory that it was Henry who caused the princes to be killed since, by the order of succession, the older one would have been legitimately seen as king and would have provided a rallying point for his enemies. He sent the princes' mother to a convent so that she would be out of the way and have no means of protesting. He then purged other members of the extensive family.Tey, through Grant, lays out a very plausible case for her theory. She was not the only one who believed Richard innocent. Throughout the more than 450 years since Richard lived and died, there have been loyal groups in Britain who have continued to believe that he had been falsely maligned and to work to rehabilitate his reputation. A few years ago, his remains were found near Bosworth Field where he had been hastily buried after the battle. After excavation and confirmation of his identity, those remains were reburied with full honors and great ceremony at Leicester Cathedral, with the service conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and royalty in attendance. Truth may be the daughter of time, but irony is its son.

This is an amazing book.Ms Tey has created Scotland Yard Inspector Grant. He has been injured and is in bed, flat on his back in a hospital.He has named his two nurses The Midget and The Amazon. He has memorized the cracks on the ceiling of his room. In short, he is bored.His good friend, Marta, brings him a group of pictures, among the pictures is a picture of Richard III. Immediately, Grant wants to investigate. That is his nature. He looks at the face and finds it difficult to believe this man could have murdered two little boys.Marta sends Grant a “wooly lamb”. The wooly lamb is Brent Carradine, a young American man who is doing research at the British Museum. Brent is just the person to become the searcher on Grant's behalf. Both men have huge curiosity for facts and research. Each of them come to the facts from different areas. Between the two of them they can figure out nearly anything.This book was amazing for me.It is a mystery, it is history, it is a description of two men who are compulsive about finding answers to questions. Both of them want solutions even if the question is over 500 years old.This is the first book I have read by Ms Tey, and it will not be the last.She has created a story which introduces the reader to British history in such a manner that the people from centuries ago are very real people. We see them as human beings living lives that would create history. We see motivations and personalities and people who are not necessarily very nice.But, I guess power does not necessarily come with nice attached.When all is said and done, it is evident that Henry VII was a sneak and Richard III has been accused of crimes that were against his very nature.I will look at history with a jaundiced eye and doubt will be my middle name.If you are looking for a book that is filled with amazing information and a mystery that is as fresh and new as anything that happened in the last week.Thank you Ms Tey, for being such a really amazing author.

This may be my favorite mystery of all time. There are no car chases, no gun battles and no amateur detective solving murders. This is a meticulous detective trying to solve a centuries old mystery using brains and research. I gave a copy to a friend and she made it required reading in her AP history classes. It also sparked a life long interest in Richard III for me. A must read for history and mystery buffs

Not a lot of books out there by helo pilots because of this being a ground pounders war. Mr Harward is a civilian(company unknown) doing contract work for USA and/or somebody else. He really never gives a clear understanding of who he works for or how he gets there. 75% of what he writes about is Afghanistan 20% US Army time and 5% other. He does jump around a lot. What makes this book good is the flying stories. And is enjoyment of what he is doing. It reads very fast and is entertaining. Many great color photos. But no maps. He does put some of his political and religions beliefs but not much.

The author , via short stories , tells of his life. From the first time the aviation bug bit him , alongside his Father who flew B-17s He started his Military career as a Tanker during the Cold War. He was selected and flew with the 160th , NSNQ and flew Hueys and 47’s. He is able to pull at my heart strings as he describes the pain as well as humour we find while killing rag heads.

This is a very amazing book. I feel that any of you that have been in the armed forces, will be able to have a real connection with this book. I have never experienced the armed forces, so there was alot of things that I had no idea about. It was a very productive learning experience. This book bounces around alot, from different personal stories, and I feel that is what gives this book character. It doesnt follow the grain, but takes a different route altogether. Once I began reading, I didnt want to put it down. I wanted to hear the next story ! I would highly recommend everyone read this book, if that's your thing. It gives an honest insight to what really happens over there, while we are safe over here, away from all the dangers. Don is not here to make everyone happy. He lays it all out, honest as can be, just like life is supposed to be. He doesnt make the events better than they should be or make anymore of them than what they were. Its exactly as it says, "an honest story of a helicopter pilots tales in war." It is inspiring, and honest. Don has a very down to earth view of life, and he knows where he came from, and where he is going. He believes in miracles, and performed a few as well.To wrap this up, if you need inspiration, then by all means pick this book up and read it. After hearing what these heroes have to go through everyday, I can not look at my life and be down. We have it made here, and we take so much for granted. Don has done an incredible job with this book. I'm grateful, and proud, that he shared his experiences with us. It will give you a new, better look on life. It gives you that feeling of gratitude, of confidence, to know that there are real people out there giving it all to protect our freedoms. Very good read. Highly recommended.2 Corinthians 5:7For it is by faith that we walk and not by sight. ...To walk by faith, is to live in the confident expectation of things that are to come; in the belief of the existence of unseen realities; and suffering them to influence us as if they were seen. The author manages to combine the grittiness of a military life and the reality of a man at war living with his family.Forget the glorified authors with their Hollywood tinted view of war, this is the real deal. A true American hero who can also compose his thoughts in a way that reaches the heart and the mind.If you like super hero and armchair commando kind of novels this is not the one for you. However, if you value those that give everything for our freedom then this you need to read this book.War can be cold and cruel, but the author manages to capture the fact that those that fight the wars for us are also human. I for one salute the author for his service to our country, and for his ability to remain human, and not least for writing this compelling read of the life so many are willing to adopt to serve their country, and in turn, us.

You showed the greatness of the American solider and sacrifice they and their family deal with everyday. I hope you will keep on writing and telling stories that both make me laugh and cry. Great read that gives insight into the laughs, struggles and sacrifices that our men and women in our armed services make on our behalf every day. The elements of daily life that we as civilians take for granted and often overlook are precious touch stones that keep these warriors grounded; Don does a wonderful job putting into words, those feelings that most would never know of otherwise.

I admire his service. The book was kind of rambling, but I'm glad I read it.

This book was a good informative book about the pilots who do the commonly ignored and very important work to keep our country safe. It does not represent itself as anything made up or untrue. The author is one of those guys you would appreciate sitting with cause you know the stories are true and so many things are still in his mind. The best!

I like the simplicity of the recipes, which are great for a beginner. The problem is that this is the most poorly edited book I have ever seen. I have tried 2 recipes so far, and both have had errors.The Cherry Preserves recipe lists vanilla in the ingredient list, but nowhere in the directions does it tell you where to add it!In the Pickled Green Beans recipe, there is no sugar listed in the ingredient list, but in the directions, it reads to boil the vinegar and water until the salt and sugar dissolve. Should I have added sugar or not?I saw another reviewer who mentioned this problem, but ordered the book anyway because overall, the reviews were so great. When you are a beginner, the last thing you want is to find an error once you have started cooking. I had to consult other recipes online just to decide what to do next.

What to do with all the tomatoes? A vast amount of leftovers from a friend's organic garden this summer had me considering canning. Canning has always made me think of the great Depression or grandmothers or people with way more time than I have doing very dangerous things to create food in bottles. But this book gives a great intro and keeps things very simple and concise, because, you do not want anything to go wrong after all that effort. Each recipe is like starting over from the beginning, which I find not only helpful but safe. A good book to have around for the late summer and autumn. I will may need a bit more gumption to try the meats and chilies. But the directions and recipes are all here, for the faint of heart to the brave.

I made a soup out of this book,.. No times given for pints, only quarts. The book is black and white! I didnt expect that.... Who prints photos of colorful food in black and white?

I'm just beginning my canning journey after harvesting too many early spring vegetables from our garden and feeling overwhelmed about the summer harvest. This book was clear and concise with tons of helpful hints and nice recipies. Between this book and google, I am set. Made 14 jars of water bath pickles and purchased my first pressure canner, following advice from this book. I really feel it is a great tool for the wannabe canning genius!

After growing up with my Mom and Grandmother canning every summer,(mostly what was grown in their own gardens) I have always been a fan of various canned foods and consider it almost an essential for some items, particularly pickles. I never knew how to can very well and kind of drifted away from the idea over the years, but this guide not only revived my interest in canning foods, it makes it simple and easy to do myself and I don't even have to call Mom for help! Not only does this book cover that basics and essentials, it also goes through different processes like water bath canning and pressure canning in detail for various foods like jams, vegetables, etc. Not only that, it has some truly excellent recipes, a number of them for my favorite: pickles. The jams and jellies are also useful to have and are something I will use again and again. I also liked the chapter on canning meats and seafood, as that was something I had never even considered until reading about. Overall I found this book to be very useful and easy to use and something I will refer to again and again as time goes by.

I like this book it was very helpful. I learned some new things like how to pick produce. I use to just check for ripeness. But now I check for cuts and holes also. The book was easy to read. It gave helpful tips for beginners. I was actually going to get the stuff for canning from a flea market. But the book said that I shouldn’t since I wouldn’t know if something was broken. That it would be better for me to buy a new one. They said to start out with an less expensive one. Just to make sure I like to can . I also learned that certain tomatoes might not be acidic enough for just a water bath. In the book there is a chart you can use to show what foods can be used for each method. The methods are the water bath and pressure canning. It gives you nice tips like that. Like what to avoid and what is ok.

I enjoyed the book because it broke the whole process of canning down into easy steps, including lists of what a person needs for different methods of canning. In this book, Rockridge Press lays out how to can and preserve from start to finish, and offers many delicious sounding recipes. This book also suggests that canning isn’t just easy and fun, but it helps those looking to save money while feeding their family quality, healthy foods. I like the thought of opening my cupboard in the winter and grabbing a jar of vegetables that I grew in my garden in the summer that still taste fresh and have been preserved. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to start canning but feels overwhelmed by the process.

I would recommend this book to anyone, at some point our eyes will show signs of aging. Who wants that?

Berne presents a thorough, doable, wholistic approach to healthy vision. By examing both the inner and outer condition of one's life experiences, choices, beliefs, and patterns, writes Berne, we can see ourselves in a new light. Then, by applying the principles of vision therapy and behavioral optometry, and through exercise and nutrition, one can reduce dependence on glasses and contacts, minimize eyestrain, and maximize energy and overall well-being. I originally purchased this book for a very specific purpose--to get some ideas for a continuing education course I and a co-author were in the process of creating. However, I found myself becoming absorbed by it. It is a different kind of ethics textbook to be sure. You have to put yourself right into it and reflect on what you believe and know (or think you know). A great read for its own sake! Highly recommended to other mental health professionals and ethics instructors.

This text is a hands-on review of ethics for counsellors. The subject is immediately useful for clinicians. It is easy to read and motivating. The examples are real life. I am most impressed.

A great, inspirational book on ethics.

I used Anderson and Handelsman's highly interactive text for a graduate ethics course. The emphasis on "acculturating" to ethics in psychology provides an excellent overall framework for any ethics course. Anderson and Handelsman also emphasize the "journey" of learning ethics in the field of psychology whereby students truly become "active explorers" in this process. The activities suggested in the book help each one of us become more aware - of our biases, our morals, our values - and also become more aware of our responsibilities to the profession of psychology. The case examples include multiple variations on themes that encourage students and professors to consider multiple perspectives and thus truly stimulate a higher level of class discussion. The informal tone of the book makes for a delightful read. It reads as if the authors are sharing trade secrets over a brown bag lunch all in the interest of the greater ethical good. If you desire to practice near the ethical ceiling and/or to teach your students to do the same, this is a go-to text!

This book differs from other ethics books in that it does not focus on laws, statutes, or ethics codes. Insteadit includes a numbers of commentaries and exercises that help students reflect on what ethics means to them and how they can translate their good intentions into good professional behavior. It is well written and contains a lot of useful exercises.
