I am amazed by the author of this astounding memoir. My childhood was very similar to hers: neglect, trauma, and abuse, which led to emotional problems during my adolescence, which gave my abusive parents the chance to get rid of me by putting me in a mental institution when I was fourteen years old. I was incarcerated in that horrible human warehouse for almost two years.I have been trying to write my own memoir since 1975. So far, I haven't been able to get past the first few chapters, because the pain of remembering is just too overwhelming. But Barbara O'Hare has done it! And she has told her story so well, with such depth and clarity, that it's almost as if you are right there with her, living in her shoes.State Hospital No. 3, Nevada, Missouri, was the name of the institution where I spent the longest two years of my life. Built in the late 1800s, it was the largest building in the state at the time of its construction, more than a mile in circumference. While I was there, it was packed to overflowing with unwanted children and society's rejects. This institution was closed and torn down in the 1990s. Three years ago, my husband and I took a drive there. Standing on the empty, park-like grounds where the massive, imposing institution used to be, felt very surreal!Shortly after I was put in the mental hospital in early 1968, I asked the ward psychiatrist how soon I would be able to go home. He coldly informed me that according to the statistics, 97% of the people admitted to that institution were never released. "If you're here past one year, the odds of you ever getting out of this place alive will go down to less than 1%," he added. "So if you want to have a life, you need to hurry up and make yourself well. WE can't make you well, only YOU can do that."He must have seen a look of shocked disbelief on my face, because he told me to ask the other patients on the ward how long they had been there, if I doubted what he said. I did ask, and the shortest answer I remember hearing was eight years, the average, more than twenty years. I wasn't yet old enough to drive a car, and my life was effectively over.I did not know how to “make myself well,” so I did the only thing I could do – I ran away. I was quickly caught, brought back, and punished with solitary confinement. In solitary, I was strapped down to a metal cot with padlocked belts that went around my waist, looped over my wrists, and encircled my ankles. They did not use strait jackets while I was there, they used these leather-wrapped steel belts, instead. I have no idea which would be worse.I ran away several more times, whenever I saw a chance to run. The last time I ran, I was gone overnight and my escape was reported on the news. When I was found and brought back that time, the administrator of the hospital came and cursed me out. Then he ordered me to be put on the maximum security ward, where they kept the criminally insane. This was where I spent the majority of my time in that “hospital.”The doctor who was the head of maximum security, was also fond of using the “truth serum” drug that Barbara O'Hare writes about in her memoir. This psychiatrist was a rapist. He was caught and arrested, the last time he abused me, because I almost died that time, possibly because he had given me too much of the drug, or maybe because I had developed an allergy to it. (I am deathly allergic to several drugs.) One of the nurses heard me “screaming bloody murder,” as she later told me, but she could not get into the doctor's locked office, where he was in the act of molesting me. As she tried to unlock the door, he called to her through the door and told her that I was under hypnosis, reliving a terrible trauma. (I have no memory of screaming and no memory of the nurse trying to get in. I only remember bits and pieces of what that evil man did to me, but what I remember is enough.)After the doctor was finished with me, he woke me and told me to go back to the ward. He tried to get me to kiss him before I left, and I refused to do it. Then he told me that I would “never be well” until I stopped denying what I “really wanted.” This was the last thing he ever said to me. (I was fifteen! I was his patient! He was almost fifty, married, with grown children! I DID NOT WANT IT!!)I remember feeling like I was floating up out of my body, as I walked back to the ward. Suddenly, I collapsed on the floor. Two nurses found me without a pulse. They somehow got me breathing again, and then they walked me back and forth between them, up and down the long hallway, for what seemed like an hour or more, until the drug was out of my system enough that I could ask to go to the restroom. One of the nurses accompanied me to the toilet, because I was still very wobbly. When I pulled down my underwear, she could see by the condition of my underpants that I had been raped. She went out into the hall and called the other nurse to come and look. Then these two angels of mercy reported everything to the police. Two plain clothes detectives came by to question me the next day. They also questioned others who had previously accused this psychiatrist of raping or molesting them. Many patients had tried to report these things, but no one had believed us, until the nurses saw the aftermath of what had been done to me. (I had also previously reported to a nurse that the doctor was sexually molesting me, but I was not believed. When the abusive doctor was told about it, he wrote in my chart that I was a “pathological liar.”)One of the nurses told me that when the police searched the psychiatrist's office they found, locked in his desk, tape recordings that he had made of his multiple rapes, of both female and male patients. The psychiatrist was arrested. A few years after this, I learned that the evil psychiatrist had committed suicide. It's hard to believe these things, isn't it? Hard to believe that a medical doctor, who is supposed to HELP people, would drug and rape his patients. People don't like to believe the “mentally ill” when we try to tell how we were abused. That's what makes us the perfect victims.Almost half a century has passed since I was set free from the asylum. Back when I was a patient there, a lot of people believed in creating a better race of people through eugenics. It was widely believed that the “mentally ill” should never have children, because we presumably have defective genes. I have had three children. My oldest son manages two motels in California. My daughter is currently attending a university, working toward a masters and then a doctorate in psychology. Her own daughter, my eldest granddaughter, will graduate this fall from the anthropology program at Harvard. And my youngest son earns enough money selling jewelry that he recently bought a beautiful home with an in-ground pool.As for me, about twenty years ago, after all my children were grown, I went to nursing school and was elected class president. A year and a half after graduating as an LPN, I published a novel. In May 2000 I was on the Oprah Winfrey Show, featured in one of her inspirational “Remembering Your Spirit” segments.I have done all of these things and more, but I still have not finished my memoir. Yet Barbara O'Hare has done it. I highly recommend her book, THE HOSPITAL. And NOW, Lord willing, I am going to follow in her inspirational footsteps and finish my memoir at long last!Thank you, Barbara O'Hare! You are an AWESOME SURVIVOR!!!!PS: I know this lengthy review does not say a lot about the book I'm reviewing. The reason is because I don't want to give any of the story away. I am telling here about some similar things that I've lived through, to validate Barbara's story. My experiences were different, but similar enough, that I absolutely believe THE HOSPITAL is completely true. Also, I have attached two pictures. One is a scan of a 100 year old postcard that I bought on eBay several years ago, of the mental institution where I was incarcerated in the late 1960s. (The words stamped on the front of that picture were original to the postcard.) The other picture is me, with our sweet old Cattle Dog, Lady, standing where the asylum used to be. That picture was taken in May 2014. I am standing, as near as I could figure it, to the spot where the maximum security ward was located, where I was incarcerated almost half a century ago.

I very seldom write a review .. but this book deserves one .. All I can say is I don't know how this young lady made it out alive after all she went through .. First by her family .. especially by her father .. then this hospital she was sent to ...The main doctor who did all those terrible things to those kids should have been sent to prison for life .. But nothing ever happened to him .. I hope Ms. O'Hare is happy now .. she deserves happiness more than any person that I have ever read about .. and I am so sorry that she went through the hell that she did .. One brave lady , to say the very least .. One of the best books that I have ever read .

This is a horrific account of the abuse suffered by innocent children by adults entrusted with their care. It is told from a survivor and hard to put down. The reader is lucky Barbara survived to tell her story and unite some of the survivors years later. I can only hope more comes to light in future years and more of this monster doctor can be uncovered.

Hard to put down. So glad Barbra is speaking out and I hope this may also exposes other abuse by the medical community.Read this book, it's very empoweringA natural born writer as well

You are brave and strong...I was a survivor...in Chattahoochee Mental Hospital...I'm glad we can write these books and try to help others...mne was written and we do need to let the world know, how these places were...having my story written, it has helped me so much...I hope by you writing your amazing story, it has helped you too. tried to friend you on facebook, I feel I have known you, for we both had a lot in common...if you would like to be friends with me on facebook...name, Paulette Conti

This was one of those books that was hard to read. But, I'm so glad I did. It made me understand that I was not the only one who had terrible memories about abuse as a child. Not in a hospital, but by relatives. And I also was believed by my own father.Thank you Barbara for writing this. You are a strong women and I'm so sorry for what you went through as a child. My heart breaks for you.

This was a page turning book. I can never imagine what makes people to abuse innocent children. This author went through so much for so long but after all this time, she is free.

Ms. Ohare opens her life, heart, and soul in this poignant true story of some of the most shocking cases of persistent, demented child abuse. Supposedly all done in the name of 'treatment' by a doctor that took the Hippocratic oath to uphold life. In reality, it was a means for mentally and morally twisted individuals to fulfill their sick desires. I applaud Ms. Ohare for getting her story out, so hopefully our being made aware will prevent this from ever happening in the future.

From the beginning to the end, Ms. Isabella Kole knocked this one out of the park. OMG, between the amazing characters, their interaction, the people around them, to the mystery suspense, this was a page-turning tale. A chance meeting, a job offer, and then an offer of convenience will bring Parker Bentley and Harper Easton from strangers to married in a very short timeframe. The plot will have things fall into place for both Parker and Harper when he hires her to become the new nanny for his two children, Ava and Aiden. When work issues make it clear that he needs a new plan of attack to protect his business and assets, it will include a marriage of convenience if Parker can get Harper to agree. While this isn’t out of love, it is established that it is permanent, no divorce, and eventually will be a marriage more than in name only. Not only that, he addresses that he will be the head of the household and he believes in discipline and a D/s marriage—and Harper will accept his terms.“I plan to take care of you, protect you, and punish you if I think you deserve it. We’ll just do things a little backward, the marriage first and the courtship later.”“She had agreed to become a wife, a mother, and a submissive, all things new to her.”Harper proves to be exactly what Parker, his children, and his business need. She loves his children, and they love her, his staff thinks the world of her, and even his company benefits from having her as part of the team. The only real problem is that these two are both so stubborn that each is waiting for the other to express words of love. Will they wait until it is too late? Will the threats for corporate takeover affect their relationship? The story is full of painful events from their past, adjusting to their future, and trying to keep things as was agreed upon in their decision to marry. There is plenty of angst, along with passion between these two. Harper accepts Parker’s dominance and easily acquiesces with her submission. There is plenty of passion, several different spankings, and plenty of steamy sex scenes. The story is a stand-alone and does have a HEA ending.“But look at us, Harper. A marriage of convenience that has turned out to be the best decision I—we—ever made.”

This is a wonderful story about two people, Harper – a young nurse’s assistant, and Parker, a well-to-do older widower with two young children. They meet by accident, he hires her as his kid’s nanny, and through a series of circumstances, they get married for mutual convenience, not willing to admit they love each other. Their relationship is wonderful, and both characters are strong and likable, which added to my enjoyment of the story. There is sex and mild spanking, as well as a mystery involving both characters and some violence, but all is resolved in the end

I am voluntarily writing this review for this book I received through Booksprouts this .Harper worked at a doctors office and Parker rushed his son into the office right with a head injury. Harper was closing up but let in him when she saw his son bleeding. Parker was frantic he loved his children and would protect them til the end. Parker’s son Aiden had taken a bad fall after his nana talked to watch what he was doing. Parker fires the nanny and when he finds out that Harper will be out of work he asked if she would like the nanny position. Even though Harper never made rash decision she told him she would take the job. Harper had come to love his two children Aiden and Ava and they in turn loved her bad. Then something comes up and he asked her a big favor so he can keep his company from the clutches of Lorena and her father. Harper and Parker were having dinner when Lorena slinks up to their table and ignores Harper but starts to fawn over Parker. Harper finally chimed in and she politely told Lorena to back off since Parker was engaged to her and they were marrying soon. Harper did not appreciate this women pawing her fiancé. Parker and Harper married which to everyone it looked real. Parker did make a couple of demands regarding domestic discipline and she agreed to be a somewhat sub for him. Harper knew she would never give him cause to spank her but that didn’t mean he didn’t which she found out she enjoyed. After the wedding the couple went on a honeymoon and they consummated the relationship but, not before Harper was ready. Parker told her that she would be the one to initiate any intimacy that they had since this was a fake marriage. But Harper was falling in love with Parker and they both vowed their would be no divorce. All the help and the family did not know that Harper and Parker’s marriage was a sham except his mother. Harper was to learn enough about the business so that she would be able to sit in on the board meetings. Lorena of course did not stop hitting on Parker while in his office. Harper came in but before she hears Lorena asking Parker how he could marry his nanny and not her. Harper comes in and let’s Lorena have it with both barrels. Lorena leaves in a huff. Time goes by and both Harper and Parker are becoming more of a married couple and he told her that the contract with her was null and void and this would be a real marriage with no contract. The family unit was getting stronger so Harper asked Parker what had caused Aileen’s death. Lorena and her father’s company wanted to by Parker’s company out completely so he asked Harper and she said no why would he sell after all the hard work he had put into the business. The board also voted for not selling the company so they told them that no deal would be struck. The kid started to call Harper Mama Harper which she liked. One day when Harper went out to have lunch with her friend Bonnie that Parker introduced her and her husband when they accidentally met at the restaurant. Bonnie and Harper just finished lunch and Harper was on the way home when she got there she figured she would go to the back and have some quiet time on time bench. Harper hears a sound like twigs breaking and then things went black. When Parker got home and when he opened the door there sat Lorena and she was pleading with Parker to give her a chance he asks her to leave. Parker noticed Harpers car in the front of the house but she was no where to be seen. He got everyone to help him find Harper when they found her she was laying with blood around her head and laying in a heap. The housekeeping was watching the kids so they would not be in the way. They rushed Harper to the hospital and Parker was in a panic he did not want Harper to die he couldn’t take it if she did neither could the kids. Days went by and even though all her vital signs were good she couldn’t wake up. He thought how strange this all was since his first wife had died by an accident in his building she was getting in the elevator and fell and hit her head which killed her. When Harper woke up the whole family had been there and Parker took the kids to see her on her release day from the hospital. Parker was so upset that he never got to tell Harper how much he loved her. The police were brought in and she told them what happened as far as she could remember. Many twists, turns, and attempted murder makes this a good book if you like mystery with great characters
