Review

"...an impressive tour de force, Cybersecurity and Cyberwar gives us actual case studies, insider interviews, bizarre trivia, and a lot of dramatic statistics to help demystify the danger, and there is real danger. The timely book brings thoughtful, witty, and balanced analysis to this very important emerging discussion...it's a book I wish I had written." --Patrick Lin, The Atlantic "If you're completely ignorant about malware and cyberattacks, this is the book for you. And if you think you know a lot about these topics, this is still the book for you. It's thorough, exhaustive, and easy to read...extremely approachable." --Mashable "In confronting the cybersecurity problem, it's important for all of us to become knowledgeable and involved. This book makes that possible -- and also fascinating. It's everything you need to know about cybersecurity, wonderfully presented in a clear and smart way."--Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs "If you read only one book about 'all this cyberstuff,' make it this one. Singer and Friedman know how to make even the most complicated material accessible and even entertaining, while at the same time making a powerful case for why all of us need to know more and think harder about the (cyber)world we know live in."--Anne-Marie Slaughter, President, the New America Foundation "Singer and Friedman blend a wonderfully easy to follow FAQ format with engaging prose, weaving explanations of the elements of cybersecurity with revealing anecdotes. From the fundamentals of Internet architecture to the topical intrigue of recent security leaks, this book provides an accessible and enjoyable analysis of the current cybersecurity landscape and what it could look like in the future."--Jonathan Zittrain, Professor of Law and Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University, and author of The Future of the Internet-And How to Stop It "Singer and Friedman do a highly credible job of documenting the present and likely future risky state of cyber-affairs. This is a clarion call."--Vint Cerf, "Father of the Internet," Presidential Medal of Freedom winner "I loved this book. Wow. Until I read this astonishing and important book, I didn't know how much I didn't know about the hidden world of cybersecurity and cyberwar. Singer and Friedman make comprehensible an impossibly complex subject, and expose the frightening truth of just how vulnerable we are. Understanding these often-invisible threats to our personal and national security is a necessary first step toward defending ourselves against them. This is an essential read."--Howard Gordon, Executive Producer of 24 and co-creator of Homeland "In our digital age, the issues of cybersecurity are no longer just for the technology crowd; they matter to us all. Whether you work in business or politics, the military or the media-or are simply an ordinary citizen-this is an essential read."--Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman, Google"This is the most approachable and readable book ever written on the cyber world. The authors have distilled the key facts and policy, provided sensible recommendations, and opened the debate generally to any informed citizen: a singular achievement. A must read for practitioners and scholars alike."--Admiral James Stavridis, U.S. Navy (Ret), former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO"This book may interest and be appreciated by anyone seeking a better understanding of cyber threats" -CHOICE

In my opinion, this book was primarily written for the C level decision maker who does not fully understand or appreciate the importance of Information Security. That having been said, I have been an Information Security professional for 17 years and I still managed to learn a lot from the book. The book begins with a brief explanation about the history of the internet which I really enjoyed. The authors highlights that the most difficult aspect of forensic analysis is attribution. Trying to determine who is responsible for the attack is difficult and sometimes impossible to ascertain. The author of the Conficker worm, for example, which created the largest bot net to this day, is still unknown. The most fascinating part of the book covered Stuxnet. The authors go into wonderful detail explaining how and why the Stuxnet virus was a masterful cyberweapon. I especially like the authors’ position that the government needs to establish a “Cyber CDC”. “Take everything that the CDC does and slap Cyber in front of it”. The authors stress the importance of conducting practice cyber attacks led by a red team; this is a message for senior management.

Dr. Singer's books are always engaging, and this book, co-authored Allan Friedman, continues that tradition. This book is written to be consumed by any thoughtful reader -- it is not a deep dive in UNIX system administration challenges, it not full of computer acronyms, it does not require an advanced degree in computer science. This book clearly educates the reader about cybersecurity issues, and then expands upon this discussion to enable the reader to conceptualize the challenges of the subject. A good example of this is their Short History of the Internet, which is a clear and concise and enjoyable read by itself. This history includes, in layman's terms, evolution, funding agencies, control entities, architecture, Al Gore, governance, cryptographic keys, and more. With this foundation the authors then expand into many cybersecurity challenges, like WikiLeaks and a variety of security threats.I particularly liked the discussions on attribution, cybercrimes, and cyber terrorism -- these are not simple issues, and the authors articulate some of the complexities of attribution that make cybersecurity so difficult. The authors wrap up the book by defining the Five Key Trends that Affect the Future of Cybersecurity – Cloud Computing, Big Data, Mobile, Cyberspace Demographics, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). These trends all increase the problem space of cybersecurity, and the authors define how these trends will drive an even higher demand for security in our future systems. With this history, description of threats, frameworks, and trends, the authors truly accomplish their goal of delivering a primer of what one needs to know about cybersecurity and cyberwar.

If you've worked in IT for a couple of years, and if you have done your part to understand the world in which you are connected, then you might find this book to be written more for the managerial staff who decide on how they are going to invest in IT, and not so much for those who are in the trenches.

Not too long ago I read the book @War: The Rise of the Military-Internet Complex by Shane Harris, which was a great book and brought home to me the rising influence of private cybersecurity and cyberwarfare interests over the government's internet policies. Though I enjoyed that book a lot, I must admit that it was relatively biased in its coverage. In contrast, this book is a far more balanced look at the issues of cybersecurity and cyberwar. Co-written by P.W. Singer, who wrote Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century one of my favorite books, this book takes a question and answer approach to the topic. For example, a subsection will say something like "What is cybersecurity?" and the authors will spend the next few pages answering the question. In that way it is also a very accessible book for people as you don't need to read the whole book, but rather find the topic(s) you don't quite understand and read about it. This also helps make the book very balanced as it is more about giving readers an exhaustive look at all issues related to cybersecurity and cyberwar. Yet, this also means that it lacks a narrative drive to it. Though the authors try to make the subject more accessible through pop culture anecdotes and illustrations, it still can read like a reference book. Still, if you are interested in this topic, this is probably the fairest and most exhaustive book out there that is most accessible to the public.

If you're not familiar with using a version control system and you're primarily working on MS-Windows this book is for you (and deserves at least one extra star in that case). But if you have any experience or will be working on a UNIX based OS such as Linux or Mac OS X you'll probably find "Pro Git" more satisfying.

If you need to get up and running quickly with Git, this is the book for you. After explaining in general terms the history, uses and variations of Version Control Systems like Git, the author pretty much holds your hand step by step to set up a local Git repository, set up a remote private repository using a free online service and how to use Git to collaborate with multiple programmers. This book will not give you a deep understanding of Git (there are other books available to do that) but it will give you enough information to get going in an easy and fun manner. I highly recommend this book if you're completely new to Version Control Systems and Git.

This book gave me the feeling I get when I am enjoying a movie and it finishes sooner that I expected.Do not expect to know everything about Git from this book. This is a beginner's guide. and a great one indeed. It got me up and going at no time. I ordered a pro git book after this and it turned out to be a perfect combination for me.I highly recommend this book. I had absolutely no idea about Git / Github and I am very happy that I have started with this book.

I had never used git before, but the situation arose where I needed to learn and use it. I was very confused and didn't know what I was doing, or why I was entering the few commands I had been told to use.Enter this book. It is SHORT and to the point. It provides CLEAR examples, followed by a brief explanation of why you did what you just did. All examples are presented via the CLI and GUI mode. I was only concerned with the latter, which shortened the book further. If you need a short and to the point book to pick up the basics of Git in a VERY short period of time, this is IT.

Good introduction to using Git, especially installation and very basic usage. Unfortunately it uses bitbucket instead of Github as a host. It would be nice to have a section on Github, which has many more users, and is pretty much the default.

Perfect for Beginners

If this is the first time using git, then this is a great starting point. It focus a lot on useful GUI tools (for Windows, Mac, and Linux), and just the bare-essentials on CLI (command line interface).

Exceeded expectations.

That was one good book! They were fated Mates since the beginning. But I didn’t like his father. Or his mother. Terrible people that shouldn’t of simply let him go. But all is well now. I can’t wait for the next book.

Well written story with engaging characters. The story moves along nicely, there is a bit of drama, a bit of laughter and fun.

I really enjoyed this one. Paxton is human and has just broken up with his live in boyfriend as well as co-owner of a restaurant. After selling off his half of everything, he purchases a bakery in a little nowhere town that he is drawn to for some unknown reason. When he gets to town, he meets the hunky sheriff Chase who is a mountain lion shifter and all Alpha. Paxton can tell right off that he is that Alpha of this little town of shifters, even though Chase refuses to step up and be what they need. Anyway, Paxton and Chase hit it off as only fated mates do. Both find out what it means to be fated mates as a human and shifter pairing from different sources and I liked that we find out that information from more then one place. I also like that Chases mountain lion is kind of an entity of his own with his own name. As Chase and Paxton are working on the attraction to each other, Chase finally decides to step up and be the alpha of the mix of shifters in the town he loves, there is trouble brewing on the horizon. A wolf shifter biker gang has decided they want the town for their own and their Alpha is going to be Alpha of the town and he wants Paxton. My only issue with the book is that after the big battle, both Paxton and Chase are wounded. Paxton has a bleeding head wound and Chase has a torn up bloody shoulder wound, I would have liked to have seen them clean and care for each other’s wounds. But we get Chase throwing Paxton over his shoulder and off to bed we go for some hot post battle sex. I enjoyed the secondary characters and can’t wait to read their stories. Plus there is a bad guy/guys looming in the background that I want to find out what they are up to and why.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the start to a new series and i loved it. Chase was an alpha who was a mountain lion and when he wouldn't agree to an arranged marriage and not go to college, his father exiled him from his pride. Chase moved on and became the sheriff in a small town. Chase, along with his cousin, took in twin wolf shifters and a squirrel. Together they all became a family of sorts and everyone in the town was waiting for Chase to accept the role of alpha and form their own clan. When Paxton comes to town to reopen the bakery, he is surprised to find how welcoming the town is to him. Pax is a human and when he met Chase, they had an instant attraction to each other. Chase was surprised to find his lion going crazy when he met Pax and Chase knew he was his fated mate. Pax and Chase had to figure out how they were going to be together and how it worked with the fated mate bond. Things were going well between them until a biker gang of shifters started causing trouble. Pax also wanted Chase to accept the role of alpha and register their clan where everyone was welcome, regardless of what kind of shifter they were. I really enjoyed this book. I love how open they all were and accepting of each other. I think Chase was born to be the alpha and i love how he wanted to help everyone. Well done.

If you like a book with fated mates, an insta-love feel, and sweet snarky banter, you will enjoy this read. Chase has always believed in fated mates. An Alpha trained from youth to take over his pride, he is disowned at a young age for not falling in line and mating with a omega of his father's choosing. Chase finds himself sheriff of Copper Creek and an Alpha who is not an Alpha. With his family of his choice, a rag tag mix of shifters, either abandoned or abused, Chase is an Alpha in all but name. Everyone else sees him as their Alpha. Paxton moves to Copper creek after purchasing the town Bakery. As soon as he meets Chase he has an instant connection he doesn't understand. Chase on the other hand can't understand what's going on with his cat when Pax is around. He never thought his fated mate could be human. Pax is snarky and not a pushover, keeps Chase on his toes. With an Alpha causing trouble in town, threats to Pax and others, Chase, Pax and his clan fight for what is theirs. For a low angst, an insta love feel, and as always my favorite part, a self made family, this book is for you. Can't wait to see what is next for this series. Would I recommend this book? Yes.

I am already a fan of this author but I really love this shifter debut! It features one of my favorite scenarios, a strong, good-hearted alpha, who is head of a clan of found family-he just didn’t quite realize it here! I was glad to see that Paxton coming into his life helped him realize what what important.I really loved Paxton and Chase together also, great chemistry and complement each other well. They are great characters individually too, nicely developed. The story flowed well, interesting setting, great secondary characters that I’m looking forward to seeing more of, and not only the clan/family premise I love but a bit of action. Plus a hint of more to come. I’m excited to see what happens as the clan/pack faces future challenges, and hopefully grows even more in members and mate matches too.All in all I definitely recommend this and I’ll be eagerly awaiting what comes next in Copper Creek!

When Chase, a mountain lion shifter and sheriff, meets Paxton, a human who bought the bakery in Copper Creek, he knew he found his fated mate. After being kicked out of his old clan for being gay and refusing an arranged marriage, finding his fated mate was everything he hoped it would be! But then enter in some trouble from the local wolf shifters/motorcycle gang and an Anti-Shifter Group and you have a combination for a great story!I absolutely loved this story! The characters were well developed with unique characteristics that make the story even more special because of them. The loyalist Chase has developed between himself and his cousin and his friends is so nice to see and is described so well as a “family” rather than a pack. I cannot wait for more from this series! I think it will be an entertaining ride to see whose story gets told next!
