I came late to the Linwood Barclay party, but I'm enjoying catching up. I enjoyed the "voice," the story, and the pacing of No Time for Goodbye, although I did have a problem or two with the book over all.This plot is very carefully constructed. Seemingly unimportant objects mentioned casually are mentioned for a reason, and the same holds true for characters. Speaking of characters, my favorite was young Jane Scavullo, a troubled teen with so much potential. I don't know if she shows up in another Barclay novel, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing her again.Now for the two things that rubbed me the wrong way. Quite frankly, I found main character Cynthia Bigge to be a royal pain in the neck. Everything is about her. No one can voice an opinion if it might be "against" her, and she's in real danger of smothering her young daughter. Yes, it's realistic behavior for someone whose family vanished without explanation, but that doesn't mean I have to like her.The other thing that bothered me was the explanation for what actually happened to Cynthia's parents and brother, so I can't say much about it without giving it away. I'll just say that Barclay's solution was a bit over-the-top for me, and I had trouble suspending my disbelief enough to accept it all.But Linwood Barclay can write like a house afire. I love his plots, I love his voice, and just because I didn't like one of his characters doesn't mean I'm going to stop reading his books!

With all the good reviews, I felt sure I would love this book. When it arrived, I was actually excited. Now I am just confused. Why all the 5star revews and glowing phrases? This is a decently written but pedestrian book with no real voice. The characters are flat and unsympathetic and barely held my interest, except maybe Vince. The plot is weak, the atmosphere dull, and the outcome insulting. It wasn't shocking, startling, stunning, or even stupefying except in its stultifying implausibility . I love a 'suburban mystery' novel but this wasnt much of anything. Though you should probably start at the beginning of the series, Promise Me - by Harlan Coben is a much better example. Promise Me (Myron Bolitar, No. 8)

First of all, you have to accept the premise that you can go to bed knowing your mom and dad and brother are in the house, too. Only to wake up and all the beds are made but everyone is gone. Everyone in your family! No one knows what happened and they are ruled missing and you (a teenager) go live with your aunt. Fast forward 25 years, she now is married and has a daughter (these 2 are the most normal and rational in this whole book by the way - I love their banter and interaction + the aunt is so cool). She starts getting messages and mysterious phone messages from someone she believes is her long lost brother and family - you still with me? Ok......great premise for a thriller right? Wrong - it all goes south after that for me. Too much 'Psycho' and crazy for me. And something about slowly watching a woman become so weak minded and acting like she's going crazy really lost me. This was a tough broad who quickly became the gal who slips on something while running-type. Not my cup of tea. I know that I won't pick up this author again, thank you. But if the stuff above turns you on, go for it!

This is the second thriller I've read by Linwood Barclay, and they were both great -- intriguing plot, natural dialogue, interesting characters, twists and an unexpected ending. This book scores on all points. I read it all weekend because I couldn't wait to get an explantion for this bizarre mystery.14-year old Cynthia has had a rough night. It's her first time sneaking out with an older boy, getting drunk, lying to her parents -- yep, Cyn has entered adolescence with a vengeance, and there is a lot of yelling and anger when her dad finds her and brings her home. The next morning Cynthia wakes up to find her entire family is gone -- her mother, father and older brother. Their beds don't even look slept in. So did they just all leave her behind? Or, if somebody killed them, why did they leave her?Twenty five years later, she has her own family -- a loving husband, a precocious 8-yo daughter, and the aunt who raised her. People around her, including her husband, can't understand why she just doesn't move on, but Cynthia is still haunted by the loss and imagines people are following her. Or are they really?The book starts slow, introducing us to these characters and this intriguing premise. It builds steadily, introducing a few new characters, and finishes strong, with a plausible ending.I'll definitely be looking for more books by this author. He writes very well, with an easy narrative voice that pops the occasional zinger.

This was a book club pick, and most of them have been very good. I like psychological thrillers. Cynthia is a 14-year-old who behaved unbelievably bad and had to be rescued by her father. She woke up the next morning to find her parents and brother gone. Both cars are missing. The beds are made, the kitchen has no remanents of breakfast and she left for school, certain that her mother was driving her brother to school. I didn't think the foul language was necessary. It just made the family more unredeemable for me. After reading it for a while, and getting the gist of the plot, I did the unthinkable. I skipped to the end just to finish it. I wasn't enthralled with the book.

3.5 - 4 stars. Iâ€™ve read so many fake 5 star reviews that I no longer trust any reviews on Amazon. However I did enjoy this book. And I can honestly say I had not figured out the twists that came towards the end. But I also will say that the action for me really picked up about the 65% mark. I found the perspective from the husbandâ€™s point of view refreshing and different. This was as much his story as it was Cynthiaâ€™s. The inclusion of Vince Fleming was a sly and clever move on the authorâ€™s part. All in all a satisfying read that kept me interested until the end. And Amazon wish you could find a way to vet these over the top 5 stars on books that donâ€™t deserve them.

First of all â€˜For Dummiesâ€™ catchy name but doesnâ€™t mean you have to be dumb to buy and read this book. It only means you need some help from an â€˜expertâ€™. And if you were already an expert you wouldnâ€™t be looking at this book.On to Windows 10 for Seniors [for dummies]. This book is excellent if you want the basics out of your computer. Email, Skype to see the grand kids, viewing pictures, game playing, surfing and maybe a little chatting or some social media like Facebook or Twitter and the basic set up of your desk top. It has some general personalization of windows, tells you how to use an email app. All great and informative stuff. Written in easily to follow instructions and great graphics. Very comprehensive table of contents, a go to book to keep on your desk for easy reference.I would certainly recommend this for the senior or anyone who hasnâ€™t grown up with computers and needs help and a little catch up. Price is excellent and as always prompt shipping with amazon.com.

Tis is a new OS for me since I'm used to Windows 7 for many years, so I needed some help navigating thru. tis is better than Windows 10 for dummies. This is a step by step approach to this new OS. Has a lot of graphics to help you meander through the apps and programs. Helped me alot

Worthless. It did not answer a single question I had. The illustrative figures did not agree with my new Windows 10 Dell computer screens and the section on Emailing was both short and non informative. Before you buy this book, go to your local bookstore and verify this assessment.

As a challenged "senior", I have some issues with the book which are bothersome to me. It arrived today and I quickly tried to put it to use. However, I soon discovered that the Index doesn't match with the subject material and requires one to search "in the neighborhood" of the page cited in the index. I also found the Index to be deficient - many topics are just missing despite being of somewhat important value - for example, creating a recovery drive is missing. Perhaps the Index relates to an earlier proof edition? I hope that I can overcome this sloppiness that the author shows and derive some benefit anyway - returning it to Amazon is not a viable option for me.

For me, this book was more difficult than Windows 10 itself. It assumes a basic knowledge of computers that only well-trained people have. I am not a dummy -- I have a Ph.D., and I've been an end-user on computers for 20 years. This book doesn't do a good job because Windows 10 is not finished. Every morning, I find that the program has been altered enough and updated so much more that I can't find what I did the day before. It's been a huge frustration. The book has been a total waste of time and money for me.

An abbreviated version of the Windows 10 for dummies especially formatted for seniors with not much computer knowledge. It gives you the set up information you need to get going. It did not have the more in depth information that I needed to solve some of the problems I wanted to solve after it was set up. It was a help but I had already solved most of it on my own.

I would have preferred a more direct approach as in an index first in the book. So that I could look at the problem that was first on MY list. Reading through the introductory chapters took too long to find out that this data was already in my data base. I still haven't finished the book.

I bought this book hoping it would tell me how to make a rescue drive for win 10 but it didn't do that and was of no help to me at all.In the past I have bought "Dummies" books and they have helped me understand windows operating systems, this book helped with nothing. the author of this book is not the usual name of dummies books. the book is now in the recycle bin

I started reading this book and literally could not stop. I was drawn to the layout of the entire book, not just the words. The colors used and the intermittent pictures, the shapes made with words, the pages where only one word or few words were used and so much more. It all worked together to create a wonderful piece of artistic expression.I believe there were poems that would speak to different people included within the pages of this book. I say this because certain poems spoke to me differently. Some spoke to my insecurities while others spoke to my experience with loss. They're always so personal in nature and how much I enjoy them is usually based nearly entirely upon my personal connection to them. In this case, Iain S. Thomas has absolutely nailed it. The poems here are perfect for my reading style of sitting back with some tea and just letting the words speak for themselves. Every poem here is emotionally impactful, and there are some real gems. Nothing here is overly complicated or difficult to understand, so if you want a poetry collection that's perfect for a newcomer to the genre that isn't super comfortable with the format, this is a great one to start with!I received a copy of this book through NetGalley. The books on the Lowercase and the Uppercase Letters seem far better than the two on Numbers & Counting and Shapes. This one on Shapes starts with identifying shapes. From page 5 through 22 covers 2-D shapes and page 23 through 34 show many different 3-D shapes, followed by showing different shapes with the same orientations and of the same size, then different orientations and same sizes, same orientations of different sizes, and different orientations with different sizes. Next are four pages on identifying 2-D vs. 3-D shapes. Chapter 2 has the child analyzing and comparing shapes. Chapter 3 shows pictures of objects and asks the child to find different shapes like a circle in the sun, a triangle in the sail of a sailboat, rectangles in doors and furniture, etc. Chapter 4 introduces the orientation of shapes with the words below, above, and next to. Lesson 5 covers tracing, drawing, and composing shapes. There is an Answer Key at the end of the book from page 78-96 that helps a child to see what the correct shapes are in the exercises and gives other answers.To be very honest, I was surprised to see rhombuses covered as one of the shapes. Parts of this book seem difficult to me for 5 and 6 year olds in kindergarten. As long as the concepts and exercises are simply introductions to shapes, and not stressful for the child, I can see this book being used either as a supplement to childrenâ€™s kindergarten classroom experiences or as a resource for homeschooling.

I got this for my 4.5 year old who will start TK this year. My son has already learned his 2-D shapes, from circle to hexagon to rhombus. So I thought that the 2-D section would be too easy for him. It was easy, however, he did learn additional things about the shapes. For example, in addition to introducing the shape, the pages work through how many sides or corners a shape has. We haven't yet reached the 3-D shapes, but I think that is where he will pick up new things. We are still in the introduction section of the book which is a dry if not boring. Flipping ahead I can see that eventually in lessons 2-5 it starts to have more interesting lessons. Lesson 2 is where kids can compare and analyze 2-D vs 3-D shapes. In lesson 3 kids identify shapes in everyday objects. In lesson 4 it talks about orientation and in lesson 5, actually trying to draw the various shapes.As with many workbooks, the pages are perforated and come out easily. I find that my son has an easier time when the pages are removed from the book and he has a even surface to work on.Overall I like this shapes workbook. I find value in the fact that it actually introduces 3-D shapes and that it tries to incorporate what real world objects would have those shapes.

The initial section of Shapes, focusing on two dimensional shape,s is not too repetitive for children already able to identify circles, triangles, etc., yet it is not too difficult for the child still struggling with identifying these differences.The introduction of three dimensional shapes is something that sometimes gets lost in using "life experiences" to discuss shapes, so the last part of the book is especially helpful. There is helpful integration of the world around the child by comparing shapes to daily objects. The best use of this little workbook will be made when the adult working with the child stretches the discussion beyond the pages to look for more of these shapes right there in the room or outside.In fact, the only quibble I have with the book is that the section with "answers" seems almost too elementary and might have been better used by suggesting supplemental activities to really focus on the "real world" around the child. Still, worthwhile if you are looking for a "single issue" workbook for some supplementation of a regular home school class or for some summer school activities.

I like all the Spectrum workbooks we've used. My daughter is 3 1/2 and while she's got a nice working vocabulary and draws well, I was at a loss as to how to teach her the more conceptual basics like numbers, letters, and more advanced shapes--both identifying and reproducing them. The Spectrum Pre K/K books have been a nice tool to each a bit at a time (a page or 2 is our limit right now).This book has a good assortment of familiar and new shapes, with the added excitement and learning of 3-D shapes as well. There's also a great section of identifying shapes within common objects, which is fun and lends itself to shape identification out in the world.I do wish it had more of a focus/more room to reproduce shapes--there's just one page for each basic shape at the beginning, and while there's room to practice a shape several times, that's not actually the focus of those lessons (identifying and describing the shapes is), and even if it were, there's simply not enough room to try it out more. I think many kids would benefit from practicing their pencil skills on precision work like this, and repetition of the same shapes, at least at the beginning, would be valuable.

Starts off easy then gets harder, works with all the standard shapes that kids would probably already know (or at least mine did) by age 5, but then goes into the three dimensional ones that my son was not as familiar with.We brought this to a restaurant (instead of electronics) for my son so he could stay occupied and it was a big hit. He loved quizzing his brother on the shapes and then showing his brother how to do the activities in his book. He felt like a "big boy" with his own "homework" just like his brother.As the book goes on it gets trickier for a young child, asking them to find the shapes in common items then color in the shapes, there was also a section of object orientation (above, below, next to) and every page has something for young ones to draw or identify or color in.Some reading is required, so you will need to supervise your younger kids if they aren't reading yet, to help them get the directions.Answer key is in the back as well, if there is any confusion what the answers should be.

See my review of Mr. Yau's "Borrowed Love Poems". I bought this book because I thought it was related to Mr. Yau's art criticism (he is also an art critic) and it is, but in an oblique way. As Bruce Conner says about "Borrowed Love Poems" "this is a swell book of poem even if they don't rhyme.".Another reviewer likens reading these poems to the experience you get from a John Cage piece...fragmentary, not easy to summarize, questionable as art...all things I happen to like...in other words, random. The best thing I can say about these poems is that reading them will not make you one bit better as a person.

This is a great book. John Yau is playful with his wording and has a lot of fun with the narrative.

Yau's poems are pleasing to all the senses. Language play of the highest order. I love a poet who teaches me something -- John Yau's encyclopedic and very personal knowledge of modern art and literature is woven through these poems: is, in a way, the glue that holds them together. I keep a laptop handy so I can Google names and words unfamiliar to me. Best of all, Yau is coming to my town, Eugene, Oregon, on May 18 to teach a workshop and he will read on May 20 at the Eugene Library. Check out [...]

We gave the "All Star Joker" and "Fenway Foul-Up" as a Xmas gift to our 8 year old grandson, who loves baseball and is heavily into Wii and other electronic games. Not only did he read both within (1) week while on Xmas vacation, but he then asked his Mom to take him to the library, and they checked out the other (3) BallPark mysteries, which he has now completed. We are so proud of him, and it's a real tribute to the creativity and style of the author, David Kelly, for writing such interesting books for elementary school age children. We now suggested to our grandson that he write his own mystery based on the Little League field he plays at. Hope Mr. Kelly doesn't mind the competition!P.S. I just ordered from Amazon.com, and received today, Mr. Kelly's first book, "Babe Ruth and the Baseball Curse", and will be giving it to our grandson this weekend. Also, we anxiously await the "Wrigley Riddle" coming out in February, as we are long suffering Cubs fans, and hope the "Riddle" will give us some insight into how the Cubs haven't won a World Series in 104 years!

I have been buying this series for my 2 grandsons, aged 9 and 11. They both are baseball players. They absolutely love this series. I think I have purchased the first 7 or 8 of them now for them. I plan on getting the rest of them. I highly recommend these.

The Ballpark Mysteries Series by David A Kelly is a great fiction series about mysteries which happen in Major League baseball parks. My 3 grandchildren (2 boys, 1 girl--ages 7, 9, and almost 11) all enjoy them. The readability of them and the mystery keep them interested until the last page. They look forward to the release of each new book. Great series for both girls and boys, especially boys since it is baseball. Wish Mr. Kelly or someone would write a series about GIRLS' softball or Girls' soccer.

My son loves these books. Inhales them. He's passionate about baseball and finds these books engaging and fun. There are many things I like about them too. Always fun to find an excellent children's author.

My sons love these books. They are easy to ready and keep them engaged all the way through. Great for a fan of mystery or a fan of baseball.

I have found this whole series, Paul For Everyone, so valuable. Like the others, NT Wright works hard to connect the points in Paulâ€™s letter to the everyday life of you and me. He explains the historical circumstances and dense theological concepts, but he leans toward application, and I am grateful. He divides the book into smaller chunks so an individual or small group could work through it easily. If anything felt missing, it was having questions for thought or discussion embedded in the chapters. The reader has to stop and formulate their own questions, and sometimes I need a little help!

This is a fantastic look into the cultural, political, and religious context of the message of Mark with helpful interpretive notes to inform how we wrestle with and apply this text today. Itâ€™s not an exhaustive, verse-by-verse approach, but rather a larger overview of each main section. A valuable and very accessible resource for anyone. Youâ€™re not going to get a ton of interpretation of original Greek or details. Tom keeps it in the 101 to 201 level, but there are insights here that you wonâ€™t find in more in depth commentaries.I lead week-long studies of Mark with college students and this book has become a valued resource. If youâ€™re planning a sermon series or small group study on Mark, get this!

I had read the Bible twice and I attend church and Bible study regularly. I ponder scripture and always want to know more. A friend at Bible study said, â€œI wish that when we read a passage there would be information right beside it to help us interpret it. Itâ€™s so difficult to understand just by reading it.â€ And she is right. And Tom Wrightâ€™s writings are exactly what she, and I, have been wishing for. This book just helps me so much more deeply understand what scriptures mean in the context of the Bible as a whole, and of our faith. My new goal is to read all of Mr. Wrightâ€™s books!

When preparing to preach or teach on any New Testament text, I first go to Wright's For Everyone series. It is not my only stop, and there are certainly commentaries that are more technical, but that is not the purpose of these books. While being theologically sound and useful to the most unlearned reader, taking a broad pericope-by-pericope approach with out breaking down individual verses, even for the trained theologian they provide a good framework for pursuing more detailed study. Wright's anecdotal introductions to each section encourage the lay reader toward their own personal application and the preacher toward integrating the practical with the exegetical.

Only 4 stars because of one-to-many reliances upon an appeal to orthodox/traditional readings of Mark.Â Â Â Â Â Still very worthwhile read that raises excellent questions such as: "How can we learn again what it means to live in a rhythm of work and rest, and to help one another in our wider society to do the same, without becoming legalists in the process?Â Â Â Â Â There are also statements to would be provocative to the pious: "Jesus went up into the hills for the same reason that others did at the time: to shape his followers into a truly revolutionary group, and to do so away from the prying eyes of the authorities.Â Â Â Â Â This would be an excellent book to use in a group to dig deeper into what is being trusted in life. Of particular benefit here is the author's own translation of Mark that can be fruitfully compared with standard translations. The author's comments will keep a group on their toes as they engage the Gospel in light of their own experience.

N.T. Wright dissects and explains Paul's message to the Corinthian christians wonderfully! He makes Paul's message clear and links this ancient text to our lives as Christians today. The message-- if one has accepted the grace found through Christ from God, initiated from the Love of God for us, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit who is God, then we need to act like it! We Christians should be a "changed" people.

I have read numerous interpreters on Galatians...I have taught and written on Galatians myself, but Tom Wright's take on this incredibly important book is indispensable! His insight that for us Jesus became the Torah, reducing our response now to one of simply trusting in that transaction, is another invaluable facet revealed in the diamond that is Galatians. Tom's accessible style should invite readers of all ages to dive into Paul's first-century world of conflict between the new and old covenants, and hopefully expose the Galatian error inherent in most "Christian" institutions today.

The strength of this book is in NT Wright's ability to relate what Matthew is saying to our modern world. He does an excellent job of bridging the gap between Jesus' world and ours and thus this would be a great book to help connect "everyone" to Matthew. Yet the weakness as mentioned by others is that he is usually only looking at the big idea of a section rather than dealing with it on a verse by verse level. Therefore, his commentary may almost leave more unanswered questions then answers. His commentary on each section is essentially equivalent to a 3-5 minute devotional.I would recommend this book to someone who is brand new to Scripture, someone under the age of 18 or someone who just wants a short, concise understanding of the big ideas of Matthew but for those truly wanting to dig deep into Matthew and wrestle with everything Jesus is saying there would be better options.

She starts with the beads that bought Manhattan (and in doing so makes a compelling case that it might not have been quite the con we think of it today) and ends with the wristwatch and its role in making modern warfare, aviation, navigation and personal private time possible.Raden divides the book into three main sections; Want, Take and Have. As someone who, once upon a time, pre-marriage, pre-children, pre-mortgage, had quite the jewel fetish, the first section, in which she links the idea of perceived scarcity to value, was particularly interesting. She calls out the great long con the De Beers diamond cartel ran, the Manhattan beads and the boom and bust of New World emeralds. The next section, Take, covers jewels in the making of Queen Elizabeth I, the diamond necklace of the French revolution and an American's invaluable assistance in funding the fledgling USSR. Cultured Pearls and writstwatches make up the last section.The book is very, very well researched, Raden is a scientist as well a jeweler and scholar of ancient history, and while the book is well written, she uses toggles between a scholarly and colloquial tone quite a bit. She take odd turns of language (almost whedonesque) which will date the book, or at least this edition. Things like calling the women of the court of Versailles' mean girls', or someone 'doing a solid' for someone else. The first 100 or so pages, I found this quite jarring but by the the end of the book I found these phrases almost charming.If you are looking for a history of jewelry this book is probably not what you're looking for. It's first and foremost a social history, but if you want a book on how human nature shaped and is continuing to shape the modern era then I recommend 'Stoned'.

An absolute Gem of a bookI loved this book.What type of book is it though?Is it a Yuval Noah Harari big picture look at humanity? Is it a Stacy Schiff event-based push through history? Or is it a subtly irreverent Mary Roach-type non-fiction book?It's a little bit of all of these. I came in expecting a Harari-esque high-level overview of humanity and its conception of value, and though Aja Raden provides that - she definitely lapses into pure history.Emeralds bring her into being able to show the fight between Spain and England. Faberge Eggs allow her to tell the tale of early 20th-century Russia.De Beers? Haha - well that's its own chapter.But though this book employs many different styles - like diamonds actually are - there is plenty to go around.She begins with the New World, with the Dutch trading New York for beads, and then trading it again for a small rock in the middle of the ocean that was the only one that could make Nutmeg at the time.She talks about Tulips, and then Marie Antoinette and a fight over a necklace. Antoinette is hapless but harmless, and the French Revolution decided to value her as the enemy.She talks about a fight over jewelry and high Elizabeth and Spain shaped the world because of it.She talks about Japan and Mikimoto making pearls - and how to manufacture an industry and a demand both.In any case - I recommend this one. It meanders in style - but that can be a good thing. And watch out for the footnotes - some are citations, but wow - some are insightful, and some are hilarious.

This book will appeal to anyone who likes history and the behind the scenes history, too. I like the point made that value is perception. Though I'm not sure that the argument extends to pearls. The whole story of Mikimoto was entertaining. His goal was to make pearls available to every woman. But last time I checked pearls (and today they are all cultured) have retained their value, and I agree with the author, I most likely have never seen a real pearl. That said I used to know Ed Henderson, Head of Minerology at the Smithsonian (Natural History Museum). I had the priviledge few have experienced in seeing some of the jewels he was assigned to collect. There are drawers and drawers of donations from those in power.. like a exquisite emerald and diamond bracelet donated by a Tzar, and of course the more recognizable Hope Diamond. . I remember he pulled out a crown made of tourquoise. Ed put it on my head... it was heavy. It was commissioned by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. I mention her because she is a prominent historical figure in the story of Marie Antoinette. My interest waned a little when I got to the story of watches, but over all it was entertaining and well researched. A fun read.

In the past, I've had occasion to take a chance on a book, not knowing if I would really like it, and ended up loving it. This is one of those books. (If you're interested, another is "Fireball: Carole Lombard and the Mystery of Flight 3" by Robert Matzen). As a jewelry hound and a history buff, I was in hog heaven with this one. As I was reading, I was thinking how interesting it was, how fascinating the stories were. If you want to learn about Jewelry, History and Psychology, all written about with panache, and a dose of humor, this is the book for you. A chance well-taken.

I bought the hardback as a Xmas present for my sister in law who is a jeweler/metalsmith/ goldsmith. Because the reviews were so high and plentiful, and because I LOVE jewelry, I decided to get the Kindle version. What a GREAT read!! Ok, you may not get into the chemical structure of any of the stones BUT maybe you'll be fascinated to know the origin of the Hope Diamond or how we were all duped by the DeBeers group into thinking we need diamonds on our ring fingers. It was a shock to find out that diamonds aren't rare. Over a billion carats have been mined but the distribution is controlled....as is our mind. The chapters of the book is divided up into "Want", "Take" and "Have".
