Karen Armstrong has written an insightful summary of the historical development of the God concept from earliest time to the present. The best review of the major contributions of her case study can be found in the book’s prologue and epilogue. Her overview of the ways in which human interpretations of the transcendental “other” have appeared in history is invaluable in sorting out the objects of religious devotion (or the denials thereof) which have challenged human understanding. To convey the scope and artistry of her analyses, I have selected ideas from her book which particularly appealed to me. She presents her case in two parts; the first is The Unknown God (30,000 BCE to 1500 CE) during which ultimate reality was not a personalized God, but a profound mystery which could never be plumbed (mythos beyond logos). Reality that transcends language must be expressed symbolically, which was variously developed: in Hebrew monotheism, in Greek philosophy, in rabbinical Judaism, in early Christianity, in Eastern orthodoxy and in Islamic revelation. Central to many of these developments were the ideas that accessibility to God involved one or more of: “kenosis” (emptying oneself of selfishness), “pistis” (commitment to engagement), “ekstasis” (stepping out of habitual thought patterns), all of which required long, hard practice or ritual devotion. Attempts to prove God’s existence through logic were proposed, but those who claimed an experience of God seemed to accept the “apophatic assumption” which was that reason was incapable of encompassing what God was. The second part of the book (1500 CE to the present) covers the period in which religion and science were seen progressively to contradict each other. As the scientific method developed, observational and experimental “truths” contradicted metaphorical “truths” in scripture, which were mistakenly taken literally and suppressed for being at odds with doctrine. The philosophical enlightenment of the 18th century attempted to use logic and reason to explain transcendent experience, and this gave rise to deism and atheism but also to literal fundamentalism as a reaction to any attempt to question the veracity of scripture. But secular ideologies, such as the logical positivist’s limitation of meaningful inquiry to objective sense data, are as deadly as religious bigotry, and both represent inherently destructive idolatries. Armstrong observes that “every single fundamentalist movement, scientific as well as religious, is rooted in profound fear and is fiercely reductionistic”. Just as the monkey trial and the use of suicide bombings illustrate the weaknesses of religious fundamentalism, the holocaust as well as Hiroshima and Nagasaki illustrate the danger of science, unfettered by compassion, as a tool of militarism. If we can no longer look to an all-powerful, oriental-despot God who, if properly appeased by devotion and praise, may bless us with favors, what kind of god does this case study suggest? An answer postulated by recent German theologians seems to hark back to "that profound mystery which could never be plumbed" – a.k.a. the ground of all being. Gould has suggested that God belongs to a religious magisterium, concerned with values which is separated from a scientific magisterium which deals only with empirical sense data. Science itself is an act of faith whereas religion requires response rather than belief. In this reviewer’s opinion, Armstrong stops short of summarizing her case, perhaps because she has chosen not to include the insights that have come from analyses of those resuscitated from death or near death. There is growing evidence that consciousness, non-localized to the bodies of individuals in these and other circumstances, can expand to realms similar to, if not identical with, those experienced in mystical traditions, in order to sense that overwhelming oneness and love which is the hallmark of the perennial God experience.

I have been a big fan of Karen Armstrong since I heard her speak some years ago at a conference. Her wit and humility are as powerful as her scholarship and big picture perspective on the history of religion. Her examination as to the history of God and what that simple three letter word might mean as metaphor rather than simply literal meaning is powerful. One of my favorite quotes (and has been oft-quoted online) is this passage from the book "We have domesticated God's transcendence. We often learn about God at about the same time as we are learning about Santa Claus; but our ideas about Santa Claus change, mature and become more nuanced, whereas our ideas of God can remain at a rather infantile level."To me, that statement does not at all deny the story of God as written in the Koran, Hebrew and Christian Testaments. God as reality can be valid but only if we understand "God" to be mean many different ideas. Some see God as literal presence; others understand God as metaphor. They are all correct depending on our viewpoint.Karen Armstrong in the gentlest possible ways invites us (actually holds our feet to the theological fire) to consider God in radically different ways that surely will force us out of our comfort zones. Marvelous book.

Ms. Armstrong correctly points out that most of the angry noise about religion comes from fundamentalists and atheists. Clearly, the author falls into a more tolerant attitude about the various religious beliefs practiced around the world. She does not, however, give a free pass to Christian, Islam, or Jewish fundamentalism OR narrow-minded atheists such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitches. I've read all four of the atheists' books by the aforementioned and, despite them being highly entertaining and thought-provoking, were of the attitude that we should throw the proverbial religious-belief baby out with the bathwater. Both sides seem hellbent on destroying the other.The author takes pains to explain the evolving nature of religious practices since we converted to monotheism. Ms. Armstrong focuses primarily on Christianity but gives a very quick overview of the Muslim and Jewish history. It's important to pay close attention while reading 'The Case for God.' Skimming over the history of how religious belief was practiced and then reading the author's conclusions is a waste of time. She covers such areas as the intent of the Holy Trinity, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, the Second Great Awakening, myth vs literalism, many of the movers-n-shakers of religious debate, and religion's complex relationship with science.For the record, I was raised Catholic but have been agnostic now for almost thirty years. Like the other half dozen other works I've read by Ms. Armstrong, she treats her subject matters with respect. She may not agree with their stances, but you won't find the author calling them rockheads or loony. Once in a great while, sarcasm makes a brief cameo, but Ms. Armstrong saves it for the fundamentalists and atheists such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. Both Dawkin-wannabes and fundamentalists have a great resistance to acknowledging the "opponents" may have some merit. I have always finished one of the author's works better informed and reminded that religion is a valuable component for many people in living life.

I purchased the 2018 edition after looking at 2017 guides to Rome in our local library. My family and I spent Thanksgiving week in Rome, and I read and reread Rick Steve's guide to plan our itinerary. I found the suggested walking tours especially helpful. The book lists accurately the web addresses to prebook tickets for major sites, such as the Colosseum and Forum, the "underground tour" of the Colosseum, the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel, and the interesting "underground" tour of St. Peters, where one can see Peter's original grave. My only criticism of the guide is that the authors sometimes try to be funny, and their quips struck me as juvenile. They should stick to the sites of Rome, which are truly magnificent.

These books are a must when traveling in Italy. Instead of buying the larger Italy book, we bought the books on Florence & Tuscany, Rome, Venice, and Naples & the Amalfi Coast because I only wanted to carry the cities I needed during our two-week Italy adventure.I highly recommend the paper copy over the electronic version. We accidentally left our Florence and Tuscany book on the plane so I downloaded the electronic version to my Kindle. It was much easier to use the maps in the book to orientate ourselves.Ricks' books are full of useful information, "traveling like a local" tips, and historical insights. We coupled the books with his free App and audio guides and got so much more out of our trip than if we had winged it and only used advice from the hotels and travel agencies.Our biggest regret was not getting the books before we booked our trip. We definitely would have saved money and visited more sights if we had read them before booking.

This guide book was terrific! Followed Steve's recommendations and read it pretty much cover to cover, particularly the sections for the museums and a side trip to Ostia Antica (Don't miss that!). One more terrific recommendation was for the small cookie shop in Tratesvere. OMG!!! Unbelievable cookies! Thank you!

My husband is from Germany, and we had already traveled in previous years to Ireland, France, the Czech Republic, and England. For those countries, we just did some online research of places that we wanted to visit, and went there. No one in our family had ever been to Rome, so on the recommendation of several family members, we purchased this guide, and I do not regret it for a second. It was worth every penny. So much useful information and insider tips. We did pay for one guided day trip from Rome to Pompeii, and our local guide for that trip gave us many of the exact same facts that Rick had listed in this book, which were extremely helpful. Some sites we visited had increased the cost of entrance by one or a few Euros, since the book had been published, which is to be expected. Otherwise we went by Rick's guide for riding the metro, taking the local bus, and walking to our destinations, with great success. I know we would have floundered around quite a bit, without the help of the guide.

This is my first time traveling abroad and I HIGHLY recommend this for those of us dumb/adventurous enough not to use a travel agent. My anxiety about the "little" things like how to get from the airport to my hotel has been completely erased. The book also covers things like which Metros pickpockets tend to be and that there's no real bus schedule. All the "little" things that can make a big difference.

Recently traveled to Rome and used this guidebook while we travelled. It provided us with invaluable advice. We used the guidebook while visiting the Vatican and it provided us with invaluable information, like how to use the shortcut to get from the Sistine Chapel to St Peters Basilica. This information saved us from having to wait in a pretty long line. I would have not known to take the group shortcut without this book. Additionally, I used the information in this book to get us from Rome to Naples/Pompeii very easily. Also, helpful information on dining. We avoided a lot of the touristy spots and ate much of the time with locals, ate great food at a good price.

This was the first Rick Steeves book I've bought - and it won't be my last. This book is thorough and FULL of useful information, from good eats to public transportation to avoiding being ripped off. The guy knows his stuff! Great book.

I downloaded this to my Kindle for our trip to Rome in May. The insights were great. I liked the tours. What the book doesn't tell you is that walking is difficult...there are just so many people. As the author says, it's much easier to take a cab!

Frommer's guides are my wife's absolute favorite travel guides. (She's the one who made this purchase.) She says, "I love them because they are small enough to fit in a purse or backpack and are packed with helpful information, suggestions, and maps. The information is organized in a way that is incredibly useful. It's easy to find what you need and the tips and recommendations seem to be spot on. I've used them to plan trips in advance as well as make decisions on location and on the fly."

This book is absolutely fantastic! It's small and concise while still being detailed enough for a short trip to Seville. It offers several suggestons for how to spend 1, 2 or 3 days in Seville. The guide walk is perfect for our upcoming cruise. I hesitated to buy a book like this for just one city, but it really does provide SO much more information than a general Spain book would. However, it does so without being too big (or too small) and includes a great fold-out map. I highly recommend any book in this series.

I loved the book,didn't know the laminated map was with it.Probably would have enjoyed seeing several more side trips included,such as Rondo,Cadiz and more. We stayed in Seville for eleven days, with an open schedule,so side trip info was helpful.I was so excited about the trip,that I forgot to read everything carefully. I wasn't aware the book was coming from the UK and would be arriving after we departed for Sevilla. So we reordered from Amazon,cuz they are speedy and now have double everything. Remember to check your order carefully. Thanks.......

when we visited Sevilla, this was our primary guide. A year later, I still haven't heard of anyplace this book overlooked. Very pleased with it.

This was an excellent guide to all of the major sights broken down into an easily readable format. Many times, I find that these guides are lacking in good restaurant suggestions but this was an exception. We followed many of the suggestions and never went wrong. I would definitely look for this guide on my next trip.

The author's obviously worked hard at finding some out-of-the-way places, in addition to the obvious ones, and has captured the flavour of the city - which is sometimes hard to do in a guidebook. Some of them are very stilted, but not this one. I like the way it told you how to get the best out of the city however many days you had, and I agree with the other reviewer who said the restaurant reviews were very good. For the price, it's as good a guide as you'll get. Lots of really colourful photos too, so a nice souvenir afterwards.

The drawings are wonderful. Our 2 1/2-year-old grandson loves pointing to the different animals. At first, it seemed that there were too many words to hold his attention, but the drawings won him over.

Beautiful book. The illistrations are womderful. The story is very sweet and perfect for my little friend who has taken to painting and LOVES animals. A perfect gift for my little friend.

My 4 year old daughter loves this book. She loves all the different animals that Frida had as pets and loves to hear about her life. It is a great introduction for pre-school or early elementary students to the life of this great artist. My little one even wants to dress up as Frida for Halloween now!

The hardcover of this book was attached with the interior pages upside down. It is a "second", but was charged full price. Did not return due to immediate deadline to use the book.

I purchased these and never used them. They came as sheets of paper with perforated edges to tear yourself. My main issue with these cards is that multiple questions are on one card. So instead of learning one item per card you had to learn 4 items per card which was not my purpose of using flash cards. I ended up writing my own flashcards so I could have one question per card.

It was overwhelming- all the info given to study- but the humanities and general info sections were most helpful

The author constantly names a "second pilot" as part of each of the flight crews who took part in his missions. But, unlike the case with American bombers, all of the British bombers of that period only had ONE pilot on board and only ONE set of flight controls. There was a space in the cockpit alongside that of the pilot. But, it was occupied by an airborne mechanic called a "flight engineer." He was NOT a pilot. Unlike the Americans, the British did not have enough manpower to provide two pilots in each bomber. They struggled just to provide one pilot per bomber. The flight engineer had no flight controls on his side of the cockpit, and was not qualified to fly the plane. However, until reading this book, I wasn't aware that the British had officers who flew as gunners on their bombers. Especially when it was flown by a sergeant. Apparently, it presented no problems for them. It would be interesting to read whether or not they met with success when raiding the Scharnhorst and other German ships.All-in-all I enjoyed reading the book. As a former USAF fighter pilot, I have to say, "Well done!"

It was a good read, but a little too sappy for my tastes in the early part of the book. It got better and I finally enjoyed it all. I was dismayed to find out that this talented and generous man survived the war but was killed in a fiery plane crash shortly thereafter. He went through all those trials of warfare including ditching in the English channel twice, only to be killed later when it was all over. Such a shame. He fought against the Nazis and bloodied their noses several times. Today we still owe so much to those brave men and women of WWII. I am afraid that most of the young in the current generations have no idea what they did, or much care. That is the biggest shame of all.

This book took me back to the days of my youth reading WW2 books shortly after the war. Having said that I don't recall ever reading a Tail Gunner story so I was curious. It is an easy read that quickly attracts involvement from those empathetic with the role and times. However, I felt a little starved of story development sometimes and felt that Rivaz had moved on way too quickly from a given story to write a new variation of a previous one. In other words there were too many German fighters diving out of the sun and not nearly enough details of the sea rescue during his first incident of being shot down at sea with most of the crew barely escaping with their lives. Heck a creative write could probably have written a book about that alone. So, a little thin on the one hand but in other respects quite enthralling with vivid moments A good enough read for those essentially interested in the subject. The Slope of Kongwa Hill: A Boy's Tale of Africa.

The book is disappointingly incomplete. No real start, middle or end. It is a fragment of a combat diary. It begins, disappointingly, with the tail gunner reporting to his bomber squadron for combat flying duty. No mention of the gunner's military training, nor who he was before that in civilian life. Then follows some exciting accounts of several terrifying missions, but no personal information about the tail gunner or his family. Was he an officer? Or an NCO? A military book, but nothing personal about him.At the end - if one can call it that - of the book, the tail gunner and his crew are shot down after a terrifying mission, but rescued from the sea, to their relief. Then what? Nothing. We don't know - that's all you get. It is as though the last hundred pages were simply deleted.What happened? Did the tail gunner then die in a later air battle? Or did he survive the war to have a family and a career? The book ends abruptly with none of that. The effect is of a combat diary covering a few months of his combat tour. Or was it more like a year? If so, what year? I guess we will never know. The book looked promising, but was a disappointment.

A really enjoyable read concerning a particular period of The author's WWII experiences. I would have been interested to read about the author's training which omitted in this book and also about the immediate post war period to which again, no information is provided. I was somewhat surprised that, even though the author makes various reference to being shot down, none of his descriptions come over as the horrors of war ! Did he purposely play down such experiences ?

For you heavy bomber fans, TAIL GUNNER (R C Rivaz) who was a PO tail gunner in Whitleys in 1940 (badly shot up on one mission and ditched at night in a storm in North Sea on another) and Halifax by ‘41(ditched on return from attack on Scharnhorst; daylight this time). Rivaz way too rah-rah and enthusiastic to be believed and spends way too much time meditating on fear, duty, emotions, but the memoir is saved by good detail on operations, daily life, and what it was like. “The searchlights were smug and conceited as they fondled us in their filthy fingers. They were holding us steady for the shells to hit… but the shells were not hitting hard enough! They must come closer. Look… the searchlights were touching us… holding us… holding us tightly in their death grasp! They must come closer… must tear right through as they did to their last victim.”

Someone called this "one of the best books" about WWII.I disagree.It is a disjointed, abbreviated and incomplete account of a a few air raids, with a lot of personal reflections and little description of the machinery of war.A lot of abbreviations and slang expressions were used we without explanation.Most place names were edited - perhaps a wartime necessity then, but annoyance now.There was never a mention of the success or failure of a mission, but a lot of time was spent describing the character of his comrades, whom we know only by their first names.In all the author does not come off as a strong leader, but certainly he is to be thanked for his service.
