I bought this book in 2006 and began the diet, including the supplements because I did not want to take steroids/biologics for my rheumatoid arthritis as I was concerned about the side effects. The most difficult part for me was cutting down on sugar, which I gradually accomplished. After staying faithfully on the diet and exercising every day for at least an hour (cardio and weights), I had dramatic improvement in my rheumatoid arthritis -- so much so that my rheumatologist said that I no longer tested positive for the usual markers of RA. I did not have any RA symptoms at all. The only downside besides the difficulty of remaining true to the dietary restrictions was that I bruised easily -- a side effect of the supplements and maybe having a bit too much omega 3 in my diet. My rheumatologist tested me for liver problems to make sure I didn't have anything serious causing the bruising, and I was fine. Before I went on the diet, my rheumatologist had strongly urged me to take steroids/biologics and was very skeptical about the diet. He saw that it worked for me and was surprised (although he also gave me a lecture on the placebo effect). In any case, I avoided taking steroids/biologics for six years and had no RA symptoms. After a few years, I got lazy, went off the diet and my RA markers returned. I am returning to it as the regime was clearly helpful for my particular inflammation issues.

I've read several of the books on inflammation and diet over the past few years and this one is the best because of its systematic approach to 1) determining if you have inflammatory diseases and symptoms 2) how urgent your condition is 3) changes to make right away and changes to make over time 3) a diet to follow (he doesn't call it a diet ) that is easy to stick with and satisfying 4) some supplements to take along with a very specific food that worked immediately. I recommend reading this book along with Clean and some book on fermentation and gut repair.

This book presents a new and unique approach to dietary management of inflammatory diseases like arthritis and atsma.Dr. Chilton is a professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest U. He cites six clinical studies and six peer-reviewed publications which support his approach. In the text he doesn't get into the details of these studies because the book isn't for doctors, it's for people who want to improve their health. One of the papers is reprinted in an appendix. He says that you should start to feel the results of the diet in a couple of weeks.Here's the basis of the program:It's known that the body uses an omega-6 fatty acid called AA to make some of the messengers which cause inflammation. Reducing the amount of AA in our bodies has been shown to reduce inflammation.AA enters our blood streams in two ways. We eat AA directly in animal products such as meat and fish. Our bodies also make AA from other omega-6 fatty acids which we get from plant based foods.The conventional advice has been to limit ALL omega-6 fats, to get a balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.Chilton says that only AA in the diet is a problem. Our bodies do convert other omega-6 fatty acids to AA, but very slowly. He shows you what meat and fish you can eat without getting a large dose of AA in the bargain.In addition, he recommends taking a suplement of GLA, which impedes the conversion of AA into messengers which cause inflammation, and getting a certain amout of omega-3 EPA as well. (from either fish or supplements) The doses of GLA and EPA depend on whether you're already sick, or just trying to avoid getting that way.Finally, he recommends avoiding carbs like white bread and sugar, which have a high glycemic index. That's becasue they raise insulin levels in the blood, which is another factor in inflammation.This is a great book. It isn't the easiest book to understand. You may have to study it, rather than just reading it through once.

If you are suffering from inflammation- please read! It’s pretty awesome that everything is backed up by science and 6 clinical trials. I just finished the book so I haven’t been able to implement the diet in great length, but have already felt better so far. Who knew, one of my highest consumed foods was one of the top trigger foods? Just hoping this works for others as well! Good luck!

This book is very informative on all conditions that start with inflammation. I have auto-immune disease and it has really helped me. Not only does he address why and how of the disease processes, Dr. Chilton details the steps to take to get better from inflammatory conditions, including a diet plan. I used this book as a study manual,checking it out at the library numerous times. I started his plan over a year ago, and since I still use the book for reference, I have bought my own copy. Medical/technical terms, interesting read.

I appreciated this book for its overview of the epidemic of inflammation, but I found the material a bit thin. The very cute and somewhat dramatic presentation style took the substantive material that is there and diluted it. The recommendations and the sample meals left me feeling that Mr. C doesn't know as much about nutrition as we need to approach this through diet. A number of the foods in those meals shouldn't be included in any healthy diet, let alone one designed to reduce inflammation: Canadian Bacon? Margarine (even "non-trans fat"?) Low fat Cream cheese? Heated oils for stir fry? Grilled foods? Fried oysters (a seafood likely to be high in heavy metals?) No thanks.

It's great that someone is taking a look at our health from a fresh perspective. The information in this book is very useful, and written in simple way that a n y o n e should understand. The only thing that I wish for is that there were more optional recipes for (mostly) vegetarians. Also, more recipes with lower total calorie value.

While I would suggest reading the books in order, the plots are such that you could feasibly get away with reading Conspiracy of Ravens first. However, you would be missing out on the ongoing character arcs. This review will contain spoilers for the first book, so read at your own risk.After jumping off the cliff at the end of Wake of Vultures, our protagonist has experienced some monumental self-discovery. For one, he’s realized that he is Rhett and a man, and the narrative no longer uses she/her pronouns. For another, he’s a shapeshifter. Once he resumes human form, he meets Earl O’Bannon, an Irish shifter who is desperate need of the Rangers. A railroad baron has been trapping monsters inside his camp and stealing body parts from them. This sounds like a job for the Shadow and his friends.Structurally, Conspiracy of Ravens was a lot more cohesive than the first book. It felt like much more of a unified plot and less like a monster of a week type format. While Rhett still had encounters with other creatures along his way to the railroad camp (noticeably a scene that felt like an homage to The Last Unicorn), it felt like one book instead of a series of strung together encounters.In the first book, I had been reading the protagonist as genderqueer, but Conspiracy of Ravens makes it clear that Rhett is a transman. He is no longer referred to as “Nettie” and the narrative uses he/him pronouns instead of she/her.However, I’m actually not a huge fan of Rhett. He’s sort of a jerk. Maybe part of it is that he’s somewhat lacking in social skills? But he’s also got more than a little sexism in him. I was hoping to see him grow on this front, but it doesn’t really happen in this book. It seems more like whenever he meets an admirable female character (and Winifred is totally awesome) he categorizes her as an exception to the general passiveness and weakness that is womenkind. But the sexism does feel more like a character trait than a narrative trait, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I’m still hoping that Rhett will have some character growth in this area in future books.My other complaint is that Rhett has way too many love interests. Look, I’m not a reader who’s a fan of love triangles, so a book with three love interests? Urgh, no thanks. I hope things get resolved fairly soon, because I’m tired of romance drama.All that said, I am definitely reading book three. I think Conspiracy of Ravens actually made some improvements upon the first book, and I’m excited to see where the series will go from here.I received an ARC of Conspiracy of Ravens from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The first book in this series was highly original, had a great narrative, excellent character development and was just overall a great read. It had a refreshingly different approach on sexuality and race that was relevant to the growth of the main character. The dialogue was well written and each character had a unique voice.The second book missed the mark in a lot of the areas that made the first so great. It reminded me of old scifi novels where the story seemed secondary to the message. The dialogue didn't read quite right and numerous moments of anachronistic phrases popped up. 'wall of nope' perhaps being the worst offender.I wanted to like this book, I still want to like the book...I'm up in the air on whether or not I'll be reading the next one. Based on how much I loved the first I'll probably give the next one a chance.

Conspiracy of Ravens (The Shadow: Book 2) literally takes off right where Wake of Vultures ends. Nettie finds herself indeed a skinwalker and a really huge raptor to boot. While she is growing accustom to this new form she happens upon Earl O'Bannon -- bearer of clothes, endless irritable dialogue, a new quest for The Shadow, and the gift to help Nettie/Rhett start down the path to find his true self. Old friends return and Rhett and his posse are on a mission to take care of a corrupt railroad tycoon who does not treat his monster employees well at all.During this time Rhett is constantly working out what it means to be Rhett and how his friends/posse truly care for him. At times the story gets bogged down in this process but eventually moves on to the next part of the adventure. The world of monsters and witches/alchemists is broadened and we get to explore a little more of Durango Territory. The ending definitely has a few leads that have you wanting the next book now.All in all a great read. I love having a western with a good dose of fantasy -- or is it a fantasy with a good dose of western -- and great characters. Again, there was a couple of times where the story telling got bogged down with some major character development but I guess that's going to happen when that character is struggling with gender identity. Two thumbs up, 4 of 5 stars -- you will enjoy it!

conspiracy of ravens by lila bowen. oh. My. GOD! this book is so, so good, and really explores some radical territory, especially in the area of gender. rarely have i encountered such power in simple pronouns like "he" and "she." in this follow-up to wake of vultures, bowen furthers the story of nettie lonesome, who is now rhett hennessy, who is the shadow. the shadow continues to gather an eclectic band of outsiders and misfits, as they seek to take down the cruel boss of a railroad outfit in mid-1800's texas. bowen, who is delilah dawson, writes with such pleasant, vivid, transportive prose, and rhett just gets more and more interesting. i must also commend bowen for being so thoughtful and thorough when writing about matters of gender, and race and ethnicity. she has such a knack for getting to the heart of a person, and allowing her characters to revel--and grow--in self-discovery. an utterly fantastic horror/fantasy/western.

Loved this book. I hate that I now have to wait for the next one. I thought I had seen every version of the complicated love life but Rhett's is new to me, and I love that. My favorite thing about a great book is that it gives you a new perspective to explore. Rhett is unique to anything I have read, and I love him. Hope for many more books (more then the planned 5 would be awesome!).

I thought this was better than the Wake of Vultures but not as good as Malice of Crows! Good character development and tragic western! I do keep hoping that Nettie (Rhett) will find happiness but know that The Shadow has no hope of doing so!

I really liked the sheer awesomeness of these books - Rhett is such a full and dynamic character and I love the dynamic between "monsters" and "non-monsters" - looking forward to book 3!

I think that anyone who has decided that they are interested in drawing can benefit from this series of books, because it breaks things up into basic shapes and gives instruction how to build up to the picture that you desire. Anyone can build their confidence with working on these projects. I have the Kindle versions for myself, but plan to purchase some more of these to share with the adults in my community art class.

Got these for an artistic granddaughter who loves sea creatures and loves to draw. Very simple to follow the process even for a 6 year old. My only complaint is I wish they were spiral bound so they laid flat at an open page.

This is a great book. I bought it for my 10 year old son, but for fun I tried a few of the pictures mysel and I was amazed at how well I could draw right off the bat. It really made immediate improvements to my drawing.

This is a great little book for my grandchildren to use when drawing and painting sea life. Not only does it have the step-by-step sketching directions, but it also includes a full color picture of the animals in their environment.

This is a good way to get started with drawing. I would just have liked a bit more color.

Despite some sloppy editing, this book has a genuine feel to it. The author presents a great deal of useful information regarding New Zealand from his personal perspective. Unlike a travel guide which is consumed with tourist must see sites and can't miss excursions, this book presents the realities of life in New Zealand for a couple starting out in life. While there are some extensive descriptions of climate, geography and culture, these are presented within the context of how these impact one's ordinary life and aspirations. For instance, the wet, cool, dreary summers (their cold season) are all the more so in light of drafty housing and the need to dress warmly indoors. Even for the casual traveler, information and insights about New Zealand's housing, employment, health care, shopping, food, language, culture and fun should be quite interesting. The author is opinionated but not arrogantly so. His perspective is that of a lower middle-class person somewhere between a backpacker and a blue-collar suburbanite facing the challenges of adjusting to life in New Zealand. You may have been there and not agree with everything he says, but then maybe you were sheltered from the realities of having to make a life there. In any case, what this book reveals seems more accurate and telling than what you would get reading travel guides and chamber of commerce materials. I would have given it five stars if all the sections of the book had been proofread, but one can gloss over the mistakes. Get over them and read on. It's very interesting.

This has been my favorite guide to emigrating to NZ. The book is taken from a collection of blogs, written over time, with retrospective views on the process as well. The writing is brief and interesting, and the authors wax philosophic at times "When it's all said and done and all the trials are past it's the hardships that make the journey epic."I thought the beginning chapters considering who should should emigrate, what traits goals they might have and why and what reasons they might have for doing so were thoughtful. Other chapters I found interesting were "Clear and honest talk about NZ's problems" "How to speak Kiwi" "The NZ sheep fence network" and "Religion in NZ". I thought the consideration of the differences in the US and NZ health care systems was interesting as well.I only wish the authors had ended up living in Christchurch, where I'll be living, instead of Aukland. The chapter giving a thumbnail evaluation of major cities and towns, considering their livability was still interesting, and I'll be comparing notes when traveling within NZ.

Great, unvarnished info...things you wouldn't even think to ask. We're planning to relocate to NZ for a year and this book has lots of "insider-ish" tips about towns, lifestyle, and expectations. My only gripe is no page numbers. :-) If you're considering a trip of any length to NZ, this book would certainly be useful. Plus I'd love to see an update now that it's 6 years after the original pub date.

Perfect for what I was looking for in a book. The writer gives everything you need to know about New Zealand. Some books are just full of fluff- not so with this book. The author is a expert on all areas and gives the reader things to think about before making the leap. This is the best book I have read on the subject. Don't throw your money away on other books. This is the one to read!

It is quite a brief introduction, and there are not so much details in it. Thus, easy to capture overall idea in a short time. You will need to buy another book to learn details.The book is not paginated, so I had to write numbers on the table of contents and each page.

I made a friend in. NZ recently. As we get to know each other better, I am considering a visit there that could last several months. I would not simply be a tourist. That is who this book was written for, someone who needs practical advice with just a little tourist fluff. Plus, the price is right. Thanks Pierce & Hann, and thank you Amazon.
