I bought this book in 2006 and began the diet, including the supplements because I did not want to take steroids/biologics for my rheumatoid arthritis as I was concerned about the side effects. The most difficult part for me was cutting down on sugar, which I gradually accomplished. After staying faithfully on the diet and exercising every day for at least an hour (cardio and weights), I had dramatic improvement in my rheumatoid arthritis -- so much so that my rheumatologist said that I no longer tested positive for the usual markers of RA. I did not have any RA symptoms at all. The only downside besides the difficulty of remaining true to the dietary restrictions was that I bruised easily -- a side effect of the supplements and maybe having a bit too much omega 3 in my diet. My rheumatologist tested me for liver problems to make sure I didn't have anything serious causing the bruising, and I was fine. Before I went on the diet, my rheumatologist had strongly urged me to take steroids/biologics and was very skeptical about the diet. He saw that it worked for me and was surprised (although he also gave me a lecture on the placebo effect). In any case, I avoided taking steroids/biologics for six years and had no RA symptoms. After a few years, I got lazy, went off the diet and my RA markers returned. I am returning to it as the regime was clearly helpful for my particular inflammation issues.

I've read several of the books on inflammation and diet over the past few years and this one is the best because of its systematic approach to 1) determining if you have inflammatory diseases and symptoms 2) how urgent your condition is 3) changes to make right away and changes to make over time 3) a diet to follow (he doesn't call it a diet ) that is easy to stick with and satisfying 4) some supplements to take along with a very specific food that worked immediately. I recommend reading this book along with Clean and some book on fermentation and gut repair.

This book presents a new and unique approach to dietary management of inflammatory diseases like arthritis and atsma.Dr. Chilton is a professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest U. He cites six clinical studies and six peer-reviewed publications which support his approach. In the text he doesn't get into the details of these studies because the book isn't for doctors, it's for people who want to improve their health. One of the papers is reprinted in an appendix. He says that you should start to feel the results of the diet in a couple of weeks.Here's the basis of the program:It's known that the body uses an omega-6 fatty acid called AA to make some of the messengers which cause inflammation. Reducing the amount of AA in our bodies has been shown to reduce inflammation.AA enters our blood streams in two ways. We eat AA directly in animal products such as meat and fish. Our bodies also make AA from other omega-6 fatty acids which we get from plant based foods.The conventional advice has been to limit ALL omega-6 fats, to get a balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.Chilton says that only AA in the diet is a problem. Our bodies do convert other omega-6 fatty acids to AA, but very slowly. He shows you what meat and fish you can eat without getting a large dose of AA in the bargain.In addition, he recommends taking a suplement of GLA, which impedes the conversion of AA into messengers which cause inflammation, and getting a certain amout of omega-3 EPA as well. (from either fish or supplements) The doses of GLA and EPA depend on whether you're already sick, or just trying to avoid getting that way.Finally, he recommends avoiding carbs like white bread and sugar, which have a high glycemic index. That's becasue they raise insulin levels in the blood, which is another factor in inflammation.This is a great book. It isn't the easiest book to understand. You may have to study it, rather than just reading it through once.

If you are suffering from inflammation- please read! It’s pretty awesome that everything is backed up by science and 6 clinical trials. I just finished the book so I haven’t been able to implement the diet in great length, but have already felt better so far. Who knew, one of my highest consumed foods was one of the top trigger foods? Just hoping this works for others as well! Good luck!

This book is very informative on all conditions that start with inflammation. I have auto-immune disease and it has really helped me. Not only does he address why and how of the disease processes, Dr. Chilton details the steps to take to get better from inflammatory conditions, including a diet plan. I used this book as a study manual,checking it out at the library numerous times. I started his plan over a year ago, and since I still use the book for reference, I have bought my own copy. Medical/technical terms, interesting read.

Thorough, yet explained well in layman's terms, simple steps to follow and why. I would highly recommend!

I appreciated this book for its overview of the epidemic of inflammation, but I found the material a bit thin. The very cute and somewhat dramatic presentation style took the substantive material that is there and diluted it. The recommendations and the sample meals left me feeling that Mr. C doesn't know as much about nutrition as we need to approach this through diet. A number of the foods in those meals shouldn't be included in any healthy diet, let alone one designed to reduce inflammation: Canadian Bacon? Margarine (even "non-trans fat"?) Low fat Cream cheese? Heated oils for stir fry? Grilled foods? Fried oysters (a seafood likely to be high in heavy metals?) No thanks.

It's great that someone is taking a look at our health from a fresh perspective. The information in this book is very useful, and written in simple way that a n y o n e should understand. The only thing that I wish for is that there were more optional recipes for (mostly) vegetarians. Also, more recipes with lower total calorie value.
