Years ago, when I was studying for my English O'Level, we studied My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, and it was hilarious. It was that book which made me aware of Lawrence Durrell and his writing, so that when I saw Monsieur, the first book of the Avignon Quintet out in bookstores I snapped it up, and as you know, that set off my life long love affair with Lawrence Durrell.Anyway, this book takes you behind the scenes of the time the family spent on Corfu. It starts with an overall view of the family and what happened before Corfu, and at the end follows up what happened to them afterwards. I already knew a lot of what's in this book, but that's because I've done lots of reading around Larry, but there were some interesting facts that were illuminating. For example, money wasn't the main reason the family moved to Corfu, it was concern over Mother's drinking - she often took to gin when she was depressed and lonely. As Larry and his wife Nancy had already decided to go to Corfu, it seems they felt it important to keep an eye on her!For those who haven't read much background on the family, you'll find it interesting, and also a little disturbing to find out just how much is fictionalised in a supposed non-fiction account of the family on Corfu. Recommended!

There was a little original material, and some of it was interesting, but about half of it is just excerpts from My Family & Other Animals. If you're buying this book the chances are around 100% that you've already read My Family, and are interested in the real story behind its fictionalized anecdotes. It's ok, but no more than that. I did appreciate the inclusion of the handwritten story by Gerald from when he was a kid. That bit was great.

I did enjoy this "background" information on the Durrell family. This PBS tv series "The Durrells in Corfu" got me interested in this family. The books by Gerald Durrell are very delightful. This author of this book, however notes discrepancies of certain events, people and timelines from Gerald's story. But then again, Gerald was writing what he remembered as a child. His view or Michael Haag's view isn't too different. Also good to see in this book are pictures of the actual family members and friends (but could do away with the nude ones!). Recommend the book to fans of Durrell family to get another perspective of their lives.

This book describes the lives of all the individuals of an amazing family. It traces their life in India and their return to England, the land of their forefathers. As they matured, the family left England for the serenity of Corfu, where their lives were influenced by a variety of interesting characters who called this island home. After several years the war began and the family fled Corfu before it was invaded by the Axis powers and the family split up and finally got back together after the war ended. The epilogue of the book describes the lives and successes of the individual members of the family and their failures and successes for the rest of their lives. This wasn't just an average family but a very special one which you must read the book to see just why.

Having watched the PBS series, I wanted to know more about the Durrells and I found this an enjoyable read. It is nice to escape to a place where there isn't constant political insanity. No murders, just an entertaining book with lots of insight into the family. I think I would have loved Corfu in that era leading up to WW II.

I’m always interested in gaining more insight into the complexities that made up Lawrence Durrell’s early life. I’ve never read anything by Gerald so I can’t attest to anything there. But I found this book sprinkled with gems about Lawrence Durrell’s years on Corfu, a much appreciated introduction to Margo, and a generally human rendition of the interwoven lives of those who sometimes appear only as backdrops for the main characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was easy reading and the pictures helped to clarify my image of the persons being spoken of I was not aware of the notoriety of all these writers but now I am the wiser. I would recommend the reading of it.

Great reading, especially if you love the PBS series. Spoiler alert: the real Durrels don’t physically resemble the actors in the series, except Gerald. Not a big deal either, as that is usually the case with making movies after real characters.

I found that the first few chapters had some good nuggets in it but then the rest went into some very deep theory which I found less influential. I was so excited about the book that I the recommended it to three different people before it even came out and bought multi versions (Kindle and the audiobook) but the the narrator's voice was so monotone that I didn't enjoy the book. Don't get me wrong, there's a few good ideas in there but it wasn't something I would recommend. That and I went to the website for the suggested information and it's not available. Should have been ready before the book came out

Eat Their Lunch is, in my opinion, Anthony's best work and his best book. And that is saying a lot because I wrote the foreword to his first book (The Only Sales Guide), and am regularly having my own clients buy his second book (The Lost Art of Closing).This is the first of his books that I did not read in advance or didn't contribute an endorsement. I had too much going on and waited to receive my own copy from Amazon. It was so much fun to read this book because this is material that Anthony has been using with his clients and in his keynotes and workshops for a long time. This is the very same content that he gets paid crazy money to teach clients that bring him in for training and coaching, so it's heavily refined and has been proven effective in the real world. I've probably heard Anthony speak live a couple dozen times so I am very familiar his concepts regarding Level-4 Value Creation and his practical approaches and powerful techniques for winning your potential dreams client away from your competitors. But it was even better to get ALL of this great material in one, easy to follow, easy to read, and entertaining book.You will read this book; you will love this book. In particular is the chapter about "Level 4" my suggestion is after you read that part you stop and take inventory on how you sell. Level 4 is a game changer. Chapter 7, is another key source of information where he writes about allies, obstacles and opponents. Well worth buying and reading whatever your level of sales experience is. I've read his other two books and I think this is his best one yet, I can only imagine how book book #4 will be.

Adam D. Ruppe Adam D. Ruppe is a professional software developer living in Watertown, New York. Adam Ruppe's "D cookbook" introduces the reader to programming in D in the form of recipes. In each recipe Adam Ruppe solves a specific programming problem with the D programming language. The author focuses on getting things done by letting the reader witness the author's approach in each recipe.The book covers a plenitude of recipes -- from essential subjects like ranges, tasks, and Phobos (D's standard library) to advanced topics like manual memory management, reflection and compile time code generation using templates, CTFE, and mixins and running D on bare x86 and ARM metal. Some recipes feature solutions devised by the D community that the reader can dig into by following the given pointers.Most notably, this book shows "idiomatic" coding in D.Although the book starts with recipes on installing a D compiler and writing Hello World it becomes fairly technical and advanced. From my perspective the book is most useful to D programmers and ambitious newcomers to the language. To me, the book is sometimes a tad too ad hoc and focused on a solution than to teach principles and concepts of the D language/library. Providing more background in these few recipes and more guidance to see the big picture justifying a taken approach may aid the reading experience. When reading the many different loosely connected recipes cover to cover I sometimes felt lost which maybe is not unusual for an encyclopedic kind of book. In some recipes the book gives its reader a feel for some rough edges of the languages and its implementation including Phobos but never to bash, always to advance. The last chapter features Adam Ruppe's libraries for web and GUI programming which I found less convincing because most is hidden inside these libraries and so the access is less direct. The book is exceptional strong when the author develops his solutions choosing wisely from the language's offerings.A must read for any D programmer to see what the language is up to and to draw on Adam Ruppe's experience with D - covering many idioms in condensed form that alone are difficult to find on the Internet.

As a beginning D coder I found this book to be great for getting up to speed on more advanced, practical D techniques. The style makes it pleasant to just read through, but, true to its name, its an encyclopedic resource for when I need to remember the finer details of more common tasks like building custom ranges. or venture into murky territory like C++ interop. As another reviewer pointed out, Adam presents the idiomatic way of doing things, which is invaluable with a language that presents you with such an overwhelming mass of tools and possibilities as D does. If you write in D, this book really needs to be in your library.

"The D Cookbook" by Adam Ruppe is one of the most diverse technical books I've read. It manages to range all the way from the classic "Hello, world" example, all the way up to stripping the Runtime bare and running it on an OS-less board, all the while managing to fully explain (almost) everything in a way that a beginner could understand.The book is formatted in such a way that each chapter is a group of related "recipes." Each recipe explains a concept by starting with a general summary, and a code sample, and ends it up with a *very* detailed explanation of how everything works. These descriptions also often include some very helpful tangential tips about how to be better D programmer in general, which can be very helpful. It's amazing how simply Ruppe can explain how and why you should do relatively advanced things like accessing and parsing exception-less stack traces.The only thing I don't like about the recipes is that sometimes the "How it works" section can be a bit long-winded. The descriptions can often span multiple pages, often reiterating lots of information. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, but be prepared to skim a lot of the book if you already know a fair amount about D programming.Overall, I think that "The D Cookbook" is an excellent read, and should be considered required reading for anyone serious about coding with D. The book is not comprehensive in any way and does not try to be, there is Alexandrescu's book for that. Instead, Mr Ruppe shows the reader how D can be used.The book suffers from a simplistic layout and some sloppy copy editing in the first chapter, however, these are minor points that do not affect its technical value nor its charm. The book (and the language) will be worth your time, if you liked what C++ used to be. Think Scott Meyers for D, a little less professional, a little more personal and a whole lot less incidental complexity.

Our teetering bulbs of dread and dream, as the poet Russell Edson once described the brain, are the most complex objects in the known universe. But despite the vast power of the cerebral cortex we still do not understand that most implacable of mysteries, our neurologically (and bodily) based selves. Laura Weed in her vastly edifying "The Structure of Thinking" sheds an enormous amount of light into the dark recesses of the human mind. Weed's book is one of the best accounts of what thought is, and what it is not. Thought, according to Weed, isn't reducible to syntax, thought is not just an algorithm or computer program, the crunching of abstract symbols as part of some sort of neuronally based computation. Thought requires an 'intentional' aspect, a point of view, and our neural systems have evolved to interpret, categorize, or mark out aspects of our experience in specific ways, ways that are not reducible to computation. Weed provides some very creative and original ways of reassessing our approach to consciousness, including a very promising discussion on 'intentional causation' or what Weed dubs 'Kausation' as a way of overcoming difficulties associated with the notion of 'efficient causation' which dominates most thinking in the cognitive sciences. My summary here is necessarily an over simplification of a rich and very subtle book. But for anyone interested in a post-Cartesian process account of mind "The Structure of Thinking" is a uniquely rewarding book.

I'm amazed several reviewers were impressed with the photographs and illustrations in this cheaply produced book. Period photos can be found in every "Hitler book". What is missing here is one piece of original artwork to illuminate the text so one can fully grasp the output of both men in their lifetime. For some reason there appear to be far more photographs of Goering (the author's favorite Nazi?) than of its 2 nominal heroes.Regarding Todt I was hoping for up-to-date colored diagrams and plans of the autobahns he personally laid-out. Anyone who's travelled on these amazingly efficient and attractive roads would like to know which ones have his personal stamp. And was the concept of their being designed to fit inconspicuously into existing landscapes (as works of art) Hitler's idea or Todt's? The author merely quotes Nazi propaganda and gives the credit to Hitler.He also completely ignores a Dr. Todt creation which survives exactly as designed in 1936. This was for the incredibly tortuous access road up to the "Eagle's Nest" - a mountain-top lodge which was Martin Boorman 50th birthday present to Hitler. I've uploaded photos from an exhaustive German booklet bought there which says it was Todt alone who suggested the boring of a tunnel and elevator shaft to avoid despoiling the mountain.Despite the narrative being constantly interrupted with profiles of minor Nazi figures Boorman does not get one. Yet, in a note attached to a photo, it says Boorman was "Todt's bitter enemy, one of the very few he had". With absolutely no explanation - although one can easily guess why.As an architect I was particularly looking forward to discovering how Speer first ingratiated himself with Hitler but I read absolutely nothing relevant on this subject and significantly not one photo of a Speer building. However a basic textbook about this period says "In 1933 Speer arranged the Berlin party rally attracting Hitler's attention". Which throws a completely different light on their relationship. Was Speer's special talent to be a court designer in the mold of Bernini and Inigo Jones? A master of all trades who could turn his hand to any artistic challenge?As the author has no interest in the visual arts one gets no insight as to the need of every ambitious architect to find a rich patron. No mention either on the special qualities that enable 2 German architects to function as master organizers. Walter Gropius being the other example. There are also no photos (or record) of Speer's many social visits to Hitler's Bavarian home - where his dignified presence was obviously a welcome contrast to the thug element who served Hitler in an altogether different capacity.Lastly one can't help objecting to the author's constant anti-Speer slant. The whole Speer section is interrupted with sidebars (on the ME 362, various Rocket programs, a possible German atomic bomb and Hitler death plots) but nowhere does one discover exactly how Speer so quickly become an expert "politician". To be a great organizer is one thing but to out-maneuver sworn enemies inside a nest of vipers for over 3 years required much more than oodles of "personal charm" - which is so often mentioned as being the "unfair asset" which saved him from the hangman's noose. Anyone who's worked in a government bureaucracy knows exactly what I mean!It should also be noted this book has been remaindered - which is why I purchased it from Amazon for half the price now quoted. Which, considering the lack of original thought or exhaustive relevant illustrations is what it's worth.

First off- the formatting on the Kindle... not very well. Some captions didn't go with the right pictures and I believe there may be some asides or boxes of supplementary text (or lots of text to caption pictures) that just seemed to interrupt the flow of the narrative.But I still gave the book 5 stars. In my opinion this was two books combined into one. For the period of Todt you seem to get a much more narrative of the actual achievements of Todt. The Autobahn being the major accomplishment. But upon Todt's death, you seem to get much more of a narrative and biography of Speer and seemingly less about the accomplishments. And the account of how Speer survives the noose at Nuremburg and the opinions of the captives.... that alone makes this a fascinating read. It's another example of how people's perception and opinion of you can drastically affect how they treat you.

Interesting subject matter, but not well written - story line tends to jump around, making it a bit hard to follow

It’s going to take a while to get through this book. There is a lot of information and I’ll have to take it in small doses. It has great photographs and thus far I’ve enjoyed the narrative. It’s not a book for everyone but if you are interested in German 20th Century architecture and civil engineering I think you will enjoy it.

This book has interesting photos of major Nazi leaders. I wish there were more of the autobahn.Some good basic info about the lives of Todt and Speer. The author seems to have a conspiratorial mindset to events, which takes away from the book's solidity. It's kind of superficial.

There were many misplaced captions, and many photographs that were irrelevant. Clearly attempts to pad the page count. Many confusing jumps of topics.However seems factually correct. Worth reading but nothing to get excited about.

A great topic full of innuendo about Albert Speer and many poor quality photographs.

The volume further explores Onodera’s and Takano’s past relationship and hints of what triggered their break up, the aftermath and the present day uphill romantic struggles. From Yokozawa, Onodera discovers that his disappearance triggered Takano to enter a depressive aimless state of drinking and sleeping around [it wasn’t helped by the fact that he had little support system, since Onodera in the past functioned as somewhat of a ray of light for him]. Onodera on the other hand develops a cynical point of view of love and never completely grew out of his general insecurities and lack of confidence [both past and present]. In another corner Yokozawa, similar to Onodera, suffers from falling in love with Takano, a man who he knows has been pinning for the same person [Onodera] for almost a decade, who suddenly appears out nowhere and feels that he has claims to Takano for picking up the pieces that he placed blame on Onodera for breaking in the first place. The dynamic of the trio is explored throughout the volume and how it affects both their personal and professional lives. Aside the relationship between Onodera and Takano, the volume also covers the process of manga publications. From how proposals work to how printing and promotions are decided and potential interactions between the departments. The characters are developing at a good pace, where Onodera is still trying to unravel the past and slowly maturing, while Takano is more stable and essentially trying to make up for lost time since they were separated and continues to relentlessly attempt to assure Onodera that he’s the one for him [despite Onodera’s current state of disbelief and denial].The art is still great and consistent throughout the manga. There is slightly more sexual content then the first volume, but like previous, there tends to be a build up to an extent [or coincidental that no one is around when they suddenly have sex in the library or engaged in sexual activities while outside their apartment].Highly suggest continuing and picking up the volume if you’ve already purchased the first volume.

Ritsu needs to figure out how to fill out a book proposal form but he has no experience with this having only been in literature sales before. Takano isn't much of a help and rejects his work outright. What's a poor newbie editor to do? In this volume, Ritsu continues his struggles with learning to become a shojo manga editor while trying to deal with Takano on both a personal and professional level. Yokozawa is also still present as the antagonist to their relationship.The book is set up very similarly to the first one with two chapters on the current timeline and then a short look back at their high school days. The quality of Nakamura's work holds up from the first volume with the layered romance, shojo satire, exaggerated editor experiences and publishing knowledge.I had more trouble with the translation of this than the previous volume. Ritsu going abroad somehow got translated as being held back a year and Ritsu says sir, a lot. It's not that he doesn't say sir in the first volume but it's definitely more present in this one. For me, that just doesn't quite capture the feel of a Japanese publishing house. The sound effects, as well, still take a bit of getting used to in their shortened form.

Best. Yaoi. Manga. Ever. BOTH characters are interesting and attractive. The side stories are good. Typical plot with one being slightly older and more assertive than the other. Ties in how manga is made and published (SUPER interesting). BEST. YAOI. EVER.

The second installment in the series keeps the flow going and only adds to the excitement. Volume two delves into the past of the two main characters and their history. It's nice to see how it started and watch the both of them as young innocent high school boys experiencing love. You can clearly see the change in character personalities from then until the present. Evening knowing how the story goes (having seen the anime) I can't help but be drawn in and am impatiently and eagerly awaiting the next volume. I already have it preordered and I know I'll be counting down the days until it becomes available.

I prefer the anime as to the manga because the art style is sketchy but otherwise its a great love story.

A must for any traveler who needs to find any location in Stockholm. Larger scale than country map, more detail than a tourist guide book. If you don't know your way around Stockholm or don't have GPS, don't leave home without it!

The coverage area was too limited. The city bus lines cover more area east to west, so for my purposes it was poor. It didn't live up to it's description.

VERY clear, easy to read, has all the major sights, plus hotels and public transport system. Inset of Gamla Stan is the best I've seen, all streets labeled, even the small ones. Of course, its a very large paper map and a bit awkward for walking around with, but absolutely the best map of Stockholm.

This large map shows everything in great detail with the various points of interest marked and identified (palace,the museums,even some of the hotels) so easy to plan a route. It even shows which streets are pedestrian only which is a great help. The guide books were great at telling me what to see, but not very good at how to get there. The tiny, incomplete maps in the guide books I bought were hard to read and left out a lot of streets as I found out when I got this map. I would call this a must buy if you will be exploring the city on foot.
