Review

Ishikawa died at twenty-six, lived long enough to change his name to woodpecker, died young, lived long enough to take an old form, tanka, and make it new, died young, lived long enough to read foreign books and taste foreign wine, died young but had chance to sing himself a long song, Whitman s eyes turned humbly, fiercely outward, careful what he sees, died young, lived long enough to build a body of poems that moves me the way weather does, birds and shabby autumn trees and all the other sorts of things that die young and make a spectacle of themselves, funny reminders, revelations, quiet ecstasies. Died young and left poems of a wry beauty, given to us here in quiet, affectionate English translation. --Robert KellyThe poet as woodpecker indeed: Ishikawa Takuboku s clear pecked rhythms & images are a perfect delight. Are they large rain drops sparingly tapping the drum-taut paper of a shoji-screen or the poet s tensed fingers rapping on his tablet? The reader sits & listens & looks and the world grows quiet except for that nano-perception that now begins to fill the world. The small daily pain or pleasure, exquisitely brought over into the simplest of words: and yet, all the world is thus said. --Pierre JorisTakuboku's acute sensibility moves through the poems. . . . A state of translucency has been quietly achieved in these sensitive translations by Tamae K. Prindle, her careful rendering in English of these works has not disturbed Takuboku's original interests and intentions: quietly bleeding through rice paper Takuboku's soothing voice confirms that there is a knowing self that delicately endures whilst bearing witness to the fullness and emptiness of life. -- Saradha Soobrayen, Modern Poetry in Translation (2010)

Ishikawa Takuboku's tanka was experimental for its time, and opened up the parameters of the form to include new subject matter and modes of expression. Takuboku died very young, and his poetic output was curtailed, but what we have demonstrates a writer who wrote frankly a wide range of experiences, including illness, marriage, memory, and impulsive thoughts that Takuboku wrote as if extemporaneously . This is a good collection and represents both Takuboku's tanka writings and his work in the kanshi form as well. Recommended for fans of Japanese poetic forms.

Ishikawa Takuboku's poems display a tragically acute sensibility. The title of the book (taken from one of his poems) speaks to the binding responsibility in this poet's unique gift of raw, searing sight. Each moment of inspiration seems to be pressed and winnowed down to absolute precision. The result is a collection of poems that offers their reader the full experience, to my mind, the one that we seek each time we sit down to read. Takuboku's writing plucks the inner-most cord and causes it to reverberate through and through, giving that rare but ever-pursued feeling of knowing, and being known. That beautiful, intimate exchange between writer and reader can be found in the pages of this lovely collection of poems. Tamae K. Prindle's translation of Takuboku's modern poems were made available to the english speaking world by the careful expertise of Syllabic Press, located in Baltimore, MD.
