I find that Assassin's Creed books are generally quite good. It's not just artbooks, the game guides too, and of course the wonderful Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia which is now updated to 384 pages for Assassin's Creed 3, available at Ubi Workshop online store.The Art of Assassin's Creed is a 144-page hardcover artbook in rather similar size to the first artbook Assassin's Creed Limited Edition Art Book.This time, the game travels back in time to the American Revolution from 1753 to 1783. As such, you'll see a lot of period costume designs, so much that I think fashion design probably flourished at that time. Most of the character designs are of soldiers and generals in uniform.The environment art consist of a small portion on present day and the rest are in the past. You can really see how the mood is set by colours and lighting. Abstergo offices look rather sterile with the hard edges and the Temple is more stylized without going into much details. Environments for the past look bleak. It's like the sky is overcast every day, regardless of whether you're in the forest, town or at sea.I noticed that many paintings have a tendency with subjects blending into the dark shadows. Like if Connor Kenway is perched atop a structure with his face lit, the unlit part of the body will just merge with the unidentifiable structure. That's the soft edges technique in art. In this case, I guess it's to emphasis something about camouflaging, and to keep you wondering what's lurking in the shadows.There's not a lot on weapons. The main bulk of art are on characters and the environments. Commentary comes with all the illustrations and they talk about the art and setting.The art is great but the subjects and artistic style might not appeal to some people. I spoke to a friend and he said he preferred the art for the earlier games. I also felt that way to a certain extent.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. If you like scenery and architectural/environment concept art, this is the book for you. If you like character concept design(s), weapon design, clothing design, this book is not for you. Overall, it was of great quality, but the content was a bit lacking. If you want an all-encompassing Assassin's Creed art book (chock full of art AND information/history), I recommend the Encyclopedia distributed by Ubisoft.
I was ever so please when I heard the thumped of the book come though the mail slot. Within the cover I was pleased to see page after page of digital renditions of areas with in the game, images of the characters very much completed and sections of weapon designs. Thankfully they didn't use any images from the game to take up space.I think what would have made this a little more fleshed would be the including of rougher images from the concept stage. You know, to get a look into the process within the designer's minds.Overall I rate this a lovely reference into a good game and I eagerly await the release of AC4's art book.....And maybe one that includes bunches of work from the Ezio trilogy.
Item arrived in excellent condition. Virtually brand new looking. The content is helpful for the aspiring artist, appreciative reader, and for those who enjoy the story magic making process for video games.
This was a distinctly average art book it gave away not much in the very mundane environments for the game. The character bit was so short you miss it and the best thing about the whole book is that small character section and the cover of the book.There are some little nice touches throughout the book with some inspired concept designs, but overall they left out the best bits I think. Probably to sell the original art off to make money elsewhere.All in all a good book, but not as good as it should have been for the price...Nice and glossy colorful pages, but not enough substance to us creative Artists that like to find inspiration in the form of quality art books.
I love the Assassin's Creed lore books, but I wish they had more pages.
My only concern is that it feels like it was only a brief summary of some aspects of the game (art wise) and I think they could have added a lot more in some areas - particularly character development art and Iroquois concept studies (There was actually only a couple pages depicting them). But the artwork is absolutely gorgeous, so I can't complain very much.
The book is beautiful and sturdy with a great amount of both images and designer commentary. I love the Assassin's Creed games, especially the 3rd one, so seeing the design process was very interesting. My only complaint is that they didn't show any unused or more outlandish designs or ideas. I would love to see things that didn't make it into the game, or just ideas that they had in the beginning.But for what it is, it is a lovely addition to my collection and I simply love this book.
Kind of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, the illustrations are excellent, made by top quality artist. But it seems to me it's very thin collection, it has about half the art collected on the Assassins Origin book.
