This book is a continuation of the story of Liam and Ondry from Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts. Again we have Liam and Ondry, front and center, months into their relationship. I can report that they are doing well, better understood by each other, and have overcome a lot of cultural differences.I loved how Lyn Gala expanded the Rownt world. We learn more about the Grandmothers, the trading, the status, the cutural nuisances - How it relates to humans, to Liam, to just who Liam is to the Rownt and to Ondry and the Rownt people as a whole. The explanation of 'sub' in human terms and how it differs from 'palteia' in Rownt terms is well thought out. I'm still amazed at how well the concepts and language barriers were broached until there was understanding and acceptance. And in this cultural exchange, which is a big part of this story, we watch Liam and Ondry grow closer as family, as partners, respecting and caring for each other, putting their needs aside for the other. But that's such a simple explanation for what was in this story. It's enough to know that due to Liam and Rownt's relationship, the Rownt are sending ships to seek out more palteia humans. . . And the leaders of their world, the Grandmothers, approve.Overall we see Liam and Ondry grow as individuals and together. They are maturing. They take great pride and own bragging rights. They take risks and hope for a better outcome. They have goals. Overall they seek acknowledgement in their status, to be known and recognized by the Grandmothers. . . For that is what the Rownt desire most. This story left me thinking long after I set it down. I wondered if after Liam and Ondry's journeys that they'd return to dozens of younglings to raise. .. Because I could see Ondry getting pounced on after leaving the temple. And his tail caught again. And again. This tail is traveling and won't be available for years. . . . So the Grandmothers need to act fast. . .The two main characters are males and yes they do sleep together but no they don't have what most would think of as m/m sex. They compromise enough so that they're both 'pleasured' and are satisfied. Oh yes and the humor in this story is very subtle. I missed most of it on my first read. I hope Lyn Gala makes this into a continuing series. It's too good not to. - Dan's Wife

I felt that this book was stronger than the first because of its extremely original plot. The plot of the first book was pretty original because it dealt with an alien claiming a human submissive with none of the violence that seems to be the norm for alien BDSM books. The plot here used cultural misunderstanding as an original and surprisingly exciting means of antagonism. Ondry and Liam continue to develop their relationship and explore a healthy D/s relationship. It might help to note that there is light bondage (not even as much as the first book), but no punishment in the way some readers might expect for a sci fi BDSM book. Also, on a tangential note for those interested in Gala’s other books, the Aberrant Magic series contains no BDSM elements despite her claim that most of her work does. It is, however, an excellent series that I highly recommend

Right up front I'm going to point out that this is a seriously good book, and both this and its predecessor are well worth reading. In a difficult achievement, this is both a great sci-fi novel and romance novel. Like other sci-fi novels of this caliber, it gives insight into humanity, the way we think, and the deeper meaning and value behind not just human action but life. It is very well-written, but it is also clever and subtle. It builds on the concepts, ideas and characterisations of the first book at a much deeper level, drawing out inherent implications and complex conceptualisations through the understanding and actions of the characters; the author quietly brings out not only intellectual truths but emotional ones.Quick summary? In this book, Ondry and Liam have come far from their shaky beginnings, firmly on the path to a long-term relationship but still struggling with communication and personal issues as they bridge the gap between cultures and species, falling deeper into the bond between them as the emotions they feel for each other draw them in. Liam is still healing from the damage he suffered from his life with humans, but coming into his own as he tries to help Ondry, and Ondry is learning how to navigate the nuances of their unconventional chilta-palteia (or dominant-submissive) relationship and figure out what Liam needs. But turmoil from the humans is invading their stable life as the human civil war spirals out of control, and when a first-contact negotiator shows up at their doorstep there is far more at stake than a good trading opportunity. The first book was about the beginning of the relationship between Ondry and Liam, the misunderstanding and miscommunication as Liam struggled to understand a foreign culture and people, torn between what he felt for Ondry and dealing with his own trauma and abuse. It examined human conceptualisation, understanding and the English lexicon, but it was told from Liam's perspective only. This time around the book is told from both Ondry and Liam's perspectives, their alternating narration s giving much greater depth study on the Rwont culture, the human mind and mentality of Western culture, but also emotions and the value of a deeply intimate bond between two people. The story of Liam and Ondry's relationship continues as they build a life together, and we get to not only see how Ondry views Liam and their bond, but how their relationship evolves and fulfills them, as well as the troubles they have and times when they're both baffled by lapses in communication.Kindle ratings tend to be a bit ....hmmm....so I'm trying to be fair when I give this book 4.5 stars. However, I should give warning that I have both odd and weirdly high standards when it comes to books.
