Vikki Kestell's Girls' of the Mountain series continues in this book. Although it is part of a series, a reader could enjoy it as a stand alone book, it isn't dependent upon reading the first book, or the series which originally introduced Tory (The Prairie Heritage series). I can't recommend these books too highly. Like Tory, they are clean Christian writing. However, Vikki Kestell is not afraid to deal with tough issues in her writing. Tory is the child of a wealthy white man and a black woman living in the South post civil war. Tory has been brought up well-educated, beautiful and she is used to luxury. After the death of her mother and father, life changes for Tory. She finds herself at the age of 12 alone and in poverty. Tory is forced into prostitution. What happens as she struggles to survive is heart breaking, but her victory in overcoming is a testimony to God's grace in our lives. The story is suspenseful. I couldn't put it down. The spiritual truths are woven into the story subtly. This is not the usual Christian fiction by any means. The issues evolving in the story are issues we see every day in the news. Vikki Kestell has written about tough subjects while being careful not to be offensive or crude. This is a book you will not forget after you read it.
Lord Jesus, I thank you for grace and mercy, I thank you that you look beyond all of our filth and see our needs, and I thank you that we don't have to carry our own burdens. I can hear your sweet voice saying to all the Victoria Washingtons of the world, "come unto me and rest." I can hear you saying, "though your sins be as scarlet, they will be as white as snow." My beautiful sweet beloved, I love you and I will never leave nor forsake you.What is one to do when life tosses you around like rag doll, and you have become so numb that you don't know if you will be able to express any emotions? This story had me on edge because I could feel Tory's pain, sorrow, and fear. I felt it so deeply that I was scared to read, but God reached deep into the darkness of Tory's life and turned everything around. He restored the years.
Once again I was swept away in time while reading Tory's story. As with all the other books Ms Kestell has written I found myself absorbed in the story. After having read the Prairie Heritage series I've anxiously await whose story would be next. This is a truly wonderful and inspiring story of a young girls trials and tribulations and her coming to the Lord. Tory's strength is inspiring. I enjoyed the back story of this tenacious young girl and her determination to never give up. Thank you Ms Kestell for another wonderful story and may God bless you.
It was such an evil thing to take young girls and destroy their innocence. Unfortunately it is still done today. I remember when Tory and Helen showed up at Joy's door in the previous books so it was nice to get the back story from the girls' point of view. I fell in love with Tory from the first. She had such a caring heart. It would be a great stand alone book but if you have read all the Prairie Heritage books, it is a must read for it tells more about the girls that were stolen. Vikki Kestell is my favorite Christian author. She is very clever in her writings. She surprises me in the plot twists and I enjoy the adventures that come from her gifted mind.
As another reader so adequately stated, an amazing story of God's love, forgiveness, and redemption. Tory's story was harder for me to read than Tabitha's. Although they were both subjected to the pain and degradation of the lifestyle forced on them when they were but children, Tory also had to deal with the prejudices that existed towards people of color, especially in the South. Sometimes, I just had to put the book aside. It was so upsetting to read how she was being treated. But with the Holy Spirit speaking to her heart and guiding her footsteps, she not only overcame every obstacle but accepted God's call in her life to help others who were going through similar circumstances. I hope Vikki has another story from this series in her computer.
We can’t always pick our circumstances. For many persons in this world, circumstances are horrific, shameful and seemingly insurmountable. Tory finds herself there. While her story is set longer ago, the themes were true before her time and are true today. Evil was present then as it is now. But, forgiveness, grace and redemption win — every time!! Through it all, Tory comes to know Truth, Grace and Love through others. Tory forgives her earthly father, those who discriminate against her and others because, her Heavenly Father, “God in Christ Jesus,†forgave her. Join Tory on her extremely difficult journey and revel in the glorious finale where she is made truly free!
I devoured every book in the Prairie Heritage series, which I consider one of my favorite series of all time (and I am a pretty picky reader who reads non-stop). I equally enjoyed Tabitha (Girls from the Mountain Book 1), and Tory is just as wonderful. I found myself totally immersed in Tory's world and loving her character so much. I will admit, the tears fell freely while reading this story as the joys and sorrows Tory experienced touched my heart deeply. If I could give this book 10 stars I would!
This story touched my heart , and the terrible experiences.made me cry. But the joy of God"s salvation, and His mercy stirred His spirit in me. Forgiveness is a glorious gift extended by Him. And then when forgiveness is offered by His children to others it is complete. I totally enjoyed reading this story..
