This book just bridged the gap!My first hand experience is a solid proof that this book did the magic and really worked for me! I learned about I'm lacking "executive presence" from a networking meeting with a senior finance executive in the industry. Not quite fully understood what it means, I did some research on Amazon and bought the book. Turned out it's the best $12.24 I've ever spent! The book indeed focus more around women and minorities, which are exactly what I was looking for, and it has plenty real life examples, statistics and actionable advice. It mentioned a lot of common pitfalls that no one in your office will mention to you about. That's what makes this book valuable. I adopted advice from this book and I applied it to a series of interviews for a job which explicitly requires "executive presence" at a prominent tech company. My performance during the interview process blew the whole team away and I got this high-paying job that took my career to a whole new level! This is totally life changing! I can't do it without tips learned from this book. ROI is huge!The only complaint I had about this book is that the book uses a lot of old English, which makes it a bit hard to read, especially that English is my second language. But my Kindle makes it convenient for me to look up those odd words. Still it's not a deal breaker. Just a heads-up.

She does not shirk from the tough issues faced by many in developing their executive presence.I came away from the book with a number of practical ideas that I incorporated into my engagement with stakeholders and the board level. Early indicators show encouraging results!I also found the sections that specifically addressed women to be extremely valuable. As a male responsible for the professional development of female team members, these insights will enable me to support them more effectively and be a better sponsor in terms of their progression. And yes, I have recommended the book to them as important reading.

When the book started it leaned heavily on looks and while the book makes its point, I felt it was beating a dead horse mentioning looks several times. I gave it 4 stars because there’s a lot of usable content. Some attributes I feel were rushed. Some parts went from one vignette to another to another teach us about the principles of EP except I was getting lost in what principle was being focused on. Felt similar at times. In general, worth the read.

As a mom of 5, with two children in the age bracket for this book, I was very interested in reading and learning how I could better help my children with peer pressure. As I do with every book I recommend to my children, I wanted to read it first and understand what they were going to be learning. I remember very well, my own experiences, and despite telling my children about them, I know that sometimes a third party has more 'authority' then my "When I was your age..." stories.What I liked about this particular book is the author's use of stories. After all, stories engage the reader far more than a lecture, and these stories were real...and relatable. The questionairres are helpful to the reader to see where they currently stand on issues of peer pressure. Based on the "score" there is an explanation to help the reader understand what they are personally dealing with gentle suggestions to guide them forward.I also liked that the principles within this book apply to anyone of any age (myself included) but that they are worded in such a way, alongside entertaining albeit embarassing at times, stories that speak on a level the reader can relate to. Not speaking over their head or in long-winded lecture format, but simple to the point statements that are gentle, yet effective.I will definitely be sharing this with my older two children who are 12 and 13 as I think they both will find it helpful, and may even want to share with some of their friends as well. I will be buying the other books in this series as it will be a great opportunity for us, as a family, to read and discuss these concerns and how to work through them. With the help of these books, it will be easier to approach challenging subjects that would otherwise not be discussed.

While I was searching long and hard for a good peer pressure management volume, I found this. At first I was not quite sure whether this is with something that could give me a good idea on how to cope up with the peer pressure. But this book does it all.I guess I was expecting less, because it is recommended for the 12-16 age group. But still the content is really rich even an adult can take things which may be hard for parents to get across. The most significant thing I found in this volume is the conjunction with true stories from different personals with helpful tips to apply the similar situations in your life.Finally it's a great volume surprising how children exposed to peer pressure vs. true friends which can help improve their attitudes and dynamics!

My 4th grade son and I read through parts of this book together, and we were able to discuss a lot.

Just what I wanted

This is a great book to help teenagers deal with all the pressures of life and school at that age. It is written to help children take control of their environment, to not be victims, to stand up for themselves, and to feel confident about themselves. It does say ages 12-16, but I would recommend that parents read it first to see where if their child is ready. The lessons that are taught in this book are so relevant and so needed today. Every student will benefit from reading this book. I love that it teaches teenagers how to say "no" to bad situations, and I also love how it helps kids learn and understand the consequences of some of their actions. Dr. Katz does have a chapter on the internet and how to use it properly, or what can happen if you use it improperly, and I think this one might be the most important. With the invention of the internet, bullying, spreading lies and rumors, and many other situations are so much worse than they were when I was a teenager. Now those lies can be spread to hundreds of people in a matter of seconds, and they will always be out there. Yes, that internet chapter is very important. I think this book is greatly needed today; it is a great resource for parents and teachers alike. There are a couple of examples in this book that some parents may not be comfortable with their 12 or 13 year-olds reading. There are some sensitive topics discussed, but I do think they are really important for parents to discuss with their children. This book breaks each question down for the children and gives them the tools to work through it all. Examples are given so children can relate to the question they are working on. Parents should read this before or with your children so you understand the book. I love books that teach children. This is one. It breaks things down into relatable and understandable parts. It gives them a way of working through each section. This is one I have my own children working through and they are doing much better at handling things at school. Dr. Orly Katz covers issues most parents don't know how to break down and explain to their children. It is one your house needs. I highly recommend it. I found no issues with this one. I continue to be impressed with Joanna van der Hoeven's work. ZEN DRUIDRY is a little more informal (in tone, anyway) than THE AWEN ALONE, but both are full of information and--perhaps more importantly--experience. Rather than stifling the reader with exercises or recipes or whatever (which amounts to distraction) van der Hoeven gives the reader very clear, very useful information in forming or shaping their own spiritual experience. Many pagan authors seek to merge two or more traditions, but very few, I have seen, have tried to do so with Eastern practices. Van der Hoeven shows the utmost respect for both Zen and Druidry, which gives her an authenticity that I really appreciate.I cannot recommend this book enough for those seeking to establish a workable spiritual practice.

An interesting perspective and very well written. If these two subjects interest you, this is worth the read. This book is a real quick read, and it very nicely summarizes both Druidry and Zen, then goes over some ways they combine. It's a nice intro to some topics that the reader will want to learn more about after reading this. It is only intended as a brief intro, and it does the job well. I really enjoyed reading the majority of this book. However..."It takes much more energy and resources to raise animals for food than it does to plant in the same amount of land a sustainable, organic crop for food. In giving up animal meat we are caring more for our environment. At the same time, we sacrifice our ignorance of the weighty issues behind such matters to become fully aware. We must accept responsibility for our part."I admit, I resent the inference that those who eat meat care less about their environment than those who do not, and its been bugging me since I read it. Maybe it bugs me more than it should, maybe I should shrug and move on. But the fact is, I don't like being called ignorant or callous on the basis of a false assumption - that those who eat meat lack compassion and misuse resources that would be better applied to growing crops.Accepting responsibility goes for everyone who eats anything. Millions of mice die each year as a result of farming grains, fruit and vegetables. Huge areas of land are stripped of their bio-diversity to make room for soil-destroying monocultures. Even some organic farms still use "natural" pesticides - as in, chemicals designed to kill "pests", such as insects and rodents. Avoiding meat doesn't mean avoiding death. The claim above also falsely assumes that most land can be used efficiently for crop growth, thus requiring fewer resources to maintain than raising animals. You try growing soybeans and wheat on dry, eroding hillsides and let me know how much food you get for the energy and resources you put in. Try explaining how bio-regions that DEPEND on grazing (by animals!) would fare better if clear-cut and replaced with rows of corn. Animals raised for food should be treated with dignity and compassion - I absolutely do not support conventional farming practices that are basically concentration camps for animals.Life feeds on life - animals still die so you can live even if you don't eat them. I know this was a short book, but if the author had time to give dietary advice she had the obligation to discuss other views without dismissing them as uncaring. I realize she wasn't trying to claim that all Zen Druids feel as she does, but I think a more balanced presentation would have been more responsible, even if that meant discussing views she doesn't share.

More of a pamphlet than a book.The author strongly advocating for vegetarianism/veganism is seems heavy handed at times and belong in their own pamphlet.Druidry is concerned with nature and humans are naturally omnivores and those pointy canine teeth most of us have were not for tearing apart lettuce after all.

At LEAST 15% of this book is word for word from the authors previous work. The rest is a poorly written summary about Zen Buddhism. Do not waste your money

This book is exactly what the title suggests and is just whatnot was looking for. A little explanation of Zen, a little of druidry, and some discussion on how the two can fit together and also fit into a spiritual practice. I highly recommend it.

This was told as a simply put play or story. They style held my undivided attention from start to finish. This was my first book from this author. My only complaint was it came to an end much sooner than I wanted. I wanted more. I will be reading all of Mr. Edwards books in the next few months. I just love the simply way he presents which I am able to get such a better understanding from.This should be a must read for all God fearing and loving persons. It is an excellent read for anyone that is beginning to answer to the pull they feel deep within to begin a relationship with their creator. I urge you to answer the pull. You will never regret it.

A Tale of Three Kings looks at the relationships of Saul, David, and Absalom. It is a book that is principally about forgiveness and how it is more important that grudges or revenge. I read this book during a particularly rough time in my life where I felt I had been wronged by someone close to me. This book takes a look at David's actions towards Saul and later towards his son Absalom. Saul and Absalom both attempted to have David killed because they felt that he was a threat to their kingdoms. Edwards does a great job of disarming the reader while informing them of how God views forgiveness. An excellent book that should be read by anyone who has ever been wronged.

This book rocked my world and had me in tears. It will reach into your heart and smack you. I don't think anyone can read it and not be affected by its message. We think we know what being a Christ-follower is about but this book puts it in perspective by the story that the author tells. It's fiction but it's powerful. It was recommended by a friend and I now recommend it to my other friends.

Excellent book for anyone who feels the cards are stacked against them. My Pastor first let me borrow this after custody and court battles, amongst a ton of other opposition as a stepmom. I now recommend to others and always come back to it when things are out of control. Gene Edwards is EXCELLENT in transporting you into where the story takes place. A great " short" read.

I got the Kindle version for the Tale of Three Kings, which I think is fantastic for anyone who is serious about living their Christianity and dealing with their hurts and disappointments in a spiritual way. I came late to the Linwood Barclay party, but I'm enjoying catching up. I enjoyed the "voice," the story, and the pacing of No Time for Goodbye, although I did have a problem or two with the book over all.This plot is very carefully constructed. Seemingly unimportant objects mentioned casually are mentioned for a reason, and the same holds true for characters. Speaking of characters, my favorite was young Jane Scavullo, a troubled teen with so much potential. I don't know if she shows up in another Barclay novel, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing her again.Now for the two things that rubbed me the wrong way. Quite frankly, I found main character Cynthia Bigge to be a royal pain in the neck. Everything is about her. No one can voice an opinion if it might be "against" her, and she's in real danger of smothering her young daughter. Yes, it's realistic behavior for someone whose family vanished without explanation, but that doesn't mean I have to like her.The other thing that bothered me was the explanation for what actually happened to Cynthia's parents and brother, so I can't say much about it without giving it away. I'll just say that Barclay's solution was a bit over-the-top for me, and I had trouble suspending my disbelief enough to accept it all.But Linwood Barclay can write like a house afire. I love his plots, I love his voice, and just because I didn't like one of his characters doesn't mean I'm going to stop reading his books!

With all the good reviews, I felt sure I would love this book. When it arrived, I was actually excited. Now I am just confused. Why all the 5star revews and glowing phrases? This is a decently written but pedestrian book with no real voice. The characters are flat and unsympathetic and barely held my interest, except maybe Vince. The plot is weak, the atmosphere dull, and the outcome insulting. It wasn't shocking, startling, stunning, or even stupefying except in its stultifying implausibility . I love a 'suburban mystery' novel but this wasnt much of anything. Though you should probably start at the beginning of the series, Promise Me - by Harlan Coben is a much better example. Promise Me (Myron Bolitar, No. 8)

First of all, you have to accept the premise that you can go to bed knowing your mom and dad and brother are in the house, too. Only to wake up and all the beds are made but everyone is gone. Everyone in your family! No one knows what happened and they are ruled missing and you (a teenager) go live with your aunt. Fast forward 25 years, she now is married and has a daughter (these 2 are the most normal and rational in this whole book by the way - I love their banter and interaction + the aunt is so cool). She starts getting messages and mysterious phone messages from someone she believes is her long lost brother and family - you still with me? Ok......great premise for a thriller right? Wrong - it all goes south after that for me. Too much 'Psycho' and crazy for me. And something about slowly watching a woman become so weak minded and acting like she's going crazy really lost me. This was a tough broad who quickly became the gal who slips on something while running-type. Not my cup of tea. I know that I won't pick up this author again, thank you. But if the stuff above turns you on, go for it!

This is the second thriller I've read by Linwood Barclay, and they were both great -- intriguing plot, natural dialogue, interesting characters, twists and an unexpected ending. This book scores on all points. I read it all weekend because I couldn't wait to get an explantion for this bizarre mystery.14-year old Cynthia has had a rough night. It's her first time sneaking out with an older boy, getting drunk, lying to her parents -- yep, Cyn has entered adolescence with a vengeance, and there is a lot of yelling and anger when her dad finds her and brings her home. The next morning Cynthia wakes up to find her entire family is gone -- her mother, father and older brother. Their beds don't even look slept in. So did they just all leave her behind? Or, if somebody killed them, why did they leave her?Twenty five years later, she has her own family -- a loving husband, a precocious 8-yo daughter, and the aunt who raised her. People around her, including her husband, can't understand why she just doesn't move on, but Cynthia is still haunted by the loss and imagines people are following her. Or are they really?The book starts slow, introducing us to these characters and this intriguing premise. It builds steadily, introducing a few new characters, and finishes strong, with a plausible ending.I'll definitely be looking for more books by this author. He writes very well, with an easy narrative voice that pops the occasional zinger.

This was a book club pick, and most of them have been very good. I like psychological thrillers. Cynthia is a 14-year-old who behaved unbelievably bad and had to be rescued by her father. She woke up the next morning to find her parents and brother gone. Both cars are missing. The beds are made, the kitchen has no remanents of breakfast and she left for school, certain that her mother was driving her brother to school. I didn't think the foul language was necessary. It just made the family more unredeemable for me. After reading it for a while, and getting the gist of the plot, I did the unthinkable. I skipped to the end just to finish it. I wasn't enthralled with the book.

3.5 - 4 stars. I’ve read so many fake 5 star reviews that I no longer trust any reviews on Amazon. However I did enjoy this book. And I can honestly say I had not figured out the twists that came towards the end. But I also will say that the action for me really picked up about the 65% mark. I found the perspective from the husband’s point of view refreshing and different. This was as much his story as it was Cynthia’s. The inclusion of Vince Fleming was a sly and clever move on the author’s part. All in all a satisfying read that kept me interested until the end. And Amazon wish you could find a way to vet these over the top 5 stars on books that don’t deserve them.

Sally S. Scott is Senior Research Associate for the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). She holds a doctorate from the University of Virginia and has over 25 years’ experience working with adolescents and young adults with a wide range of disabilities. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on issues related to inclusive teaching, college support services, and emerging disability populations.A former department chair and modern languages program coordinator, Wade Edwards is a professor of French and Associate Dean of the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences at Longwood University in Virginia. His scholarship has appeared in Nineteenth-Century French Studies, Feminist Teacher, and the NECTFL Review, among other publications. He has been teaching French to students at a variety of public universities for 25 years.
