I can't begin to explain how this book touched my heart! Although I am a woman, reading about Joseph makes me want to improve on living a life of integrity and forgiveness.I originally purchased this book in hardcover to give to a friend because he reminded me so much of the Joseph that I've often read about in the Bible. Well, through circumstance with my friend reading it, I decided to download it to my Kindle so I could read it as well. It was hard to put down!Joseph was an amazing man! I went through every emotion while reading this book from laughing to crying to ultimately falling in love with with Joseph's heart after God.I highly recommend this book, and give warning .....be prepared for changes within, it will grab your heart and make you want to be a better person! enJOY the read!!

This book is one of a series and I have read two others. Charles Swindoll is a great storyteller. He has the reader read the Scripture that the story of Joseph is based on. It is done in sections. Within each section he explains the background of life time in the Bible including their customs and Jewish beliefs. Then he applies this to modern every day examples to help you in your life as you learn about Joseph.

Swindoll delivers again with one of the greatest (prelude to Christ) characters of the old testament. his telling of Joseph while lacking some of the more interesting details per Jasher and Jubilees, is one of the best I've ever read. when it comes to biblical biographies, Swindoll always seems to come through brilliantly!

I really enjoyed this book about Joseph. Although I was familiar with the story of Joseph it gave lots of insights that helped me understand the story better. There are things you know from reading the Biblical story but this gave additional insights that really brought his character to life! There are cultural things explained that are not apparent to us because our culture is so different.

I'm now reading Joseph, and I've already read two other character studies in this series by Chuck Swindoll. I've gotten a lot out of all of them. Swindoll does a good job of identifying why the person was and acted the way they did. And he draws many parellels to our lives today. In this book I've learned a lot about the family life Joseph came from: he was a favored son of a passive father. But it's not just the facts that are recounted. Swindoll goes back to study Joseph's father, Jacob, and the behavior and events that shaped him. We learn the impact of all that history on Joseph's life. When the jealous brothers eventually sold him into slavery, this book explores the works God began to do in his life and the immeasurable faith Joseph must have had in order to sustain him through the tough years that followed. I simply enjoy Swindoll's attitude and style. He pulls a lot of wisdom out of the verses in the Bible and helps bring it to life. You can easily imagine yourself in Joseph's shoes and how you would have responded. You learn the lessons of trusting in God through difficult situations and the difference that YOUR attitude can have while you wait.

This book on the life of Joseph, has given me insight into what dynamic faith can do in a person's life. It is a story of perseverance by one man to do the right thing in spite of what will happen to him....and his reward for continuing steadfastly to be used for God's purpose, in spite of difficulties and discouragement; .Chuck Swindoll is one of my favorite authors and his series on Great Lives from God's Word is stellar. Joseph is beset by many of the problems that afflict us today...and some that none of us would ever think of being afflicted with!...but whose faith is a model for us all and shows what God will do in our own lives if we will but have a faith like that of Joseph.

Chuck Swindoll's peek into the life of Joseph will make you look at each Biblical character differently. Joseph's was much more than a "From the pit to the palace" story as one of grace, forgiveness, gentleness, love, and family. This book provides an in depth look into the life of Joseph as well as Jacob his father. I look forward to reading others in the series.

Great book because Joseph was a biblical titan. The author does him justice and "preachy" detours are few enough not to be problematic. (I'm in favor of preaching--just let Joseph speak for himself rather than occasional "now where is this coming from".

I resisted the temptation setting myself the goal of responding only when I was finished. And now I have done that.In this book Stephen Buhner proposed to me, in a most personal way, that I undertake my re-education. His single piece of advice was this: Whenever you encounter something ask yourself: How does it feel?So I will say how this book feels. This book feels heavy, not the heaviness of its actual weight, though it is not a short book, but the heaviness the old hippies referred to when they said, “That’s heavy, man.” Importance has its own kind of weight, and the weight of this book settles onto my body, not in any oppressive way but as if it were a fluid of warmth that conformed to every lineament of my physical self. But it was not my physical self that was embraced, it was rather my natural mind; it was, in the end, my heart. For this is a book of love if ever there was one and kindles love in response.It is as if someone nudged me awake from my sleep, gently but insistently. I knew at any moment I could say, “Leave me alone,” and the book would depart. Or I could let it rouse me. The book feels full of arousal, awake for the one who would awaken. So the book feels bright, not dazzling and brilliant in its brightness, not a brightness that causes squinting, but a brightness like the moon, never caustic, but when it is full adequate for many discoveries.The book is as stocked with joy as a spring river with trout. It abounds with an energy of the sort the old prophets felt when stirred by the touch of vision. It is lithe like a big cat moving in the forest; it is a repetitious as the old bardic chants composed of formulae worked and reworked in changing skeins. It has the generosity of the potlatch. I love the man who wrote this book though I am not likely ever to meet him. Why? Because this book affirms something in me that needs affirming, seeks to feel affirmed. I feel I am in the presence of a true friend.Listen, I am 73 year old. I have a PhD in literature from Harvard. I taught in the academic world Buhner describes. AND I have had those experiences in my life which opened the doors of perception. But I have never quite found a guide to the heart of the earth. If I could only hand down to my children one book from all the books I have read, it would be this book. It is like a map---though not the territory---a golden thread through the labyrinth.Feel? it’s the feeling of having listened to a great song sung by a someone who has come back from a long journey with the wish to inspire me to travel there on my own.

This book is Life-Changing. It's long, 500 pages, and you have to read through it because he's really building a case, but it's hard to put down. You start thinking "Phew, made it to page 400!" just because there's so much in it, but there's no temptation to read something else instead - or even to *do* something else instead. One of his points is that we aren't going to survive as a viable species in any form we'd recognize, till we reanimate the Planet and its Peoples - the Animals, Plants, Amoeba, Bacteria, even Rocks. We are their *partners* on the Planet, not their masters. Along the way he introduces fascinating new science about how perception works.

This may be the most important book you'll read this decade. Maybe ever. It re-enforces things that many of us have intuitively believed for a long time, but it does it through cutting edge science that is completely blowing my mind. Do you sort of think that the gaia hypothesis is kind of true--you know, maybe on a mythical or metaphorical level? Do you want proof that it is absolutely, scientifically true? The science presented here is mind blowing, paradigm shifting. As the mystics and native medicine people have been telling us forever, everything is connected, everything is conscious and communicates with everything else, the earth is actually a conscious, continually evolving being of which we and every other living thing are interconnected expressions. We have the capacity to actually SENSE this, feel it, know it in the ways that all people used to know it, back before the current scientific paradigm--now too slowly changing--started to convince us that we are all separate beings, and the rest of the universe, including the rest of "nature", is basically mechanical and unconscious and cannot communicate with us. The author gives exercises for developing this other way of sensing that we all are capable of but have mostly had beaten and "educated" and conditioned out of us. I'm actually not quite done reading the book yet, but each chapter fills me with more amazement, more "aha, yes, YES!" moments. I'm ordering at least 2 more copies to give to others. This is an absolute must read book, one that COULD help us to pull back from the precipice we are currently hanging over. We won't destroy the planet, though we are currently doing it very serious harm. But we may succeed in getting ourselves eradicated as a sadly failed experiment that was ultimately too destructive to the rest of the living planet of which we are but one expression. There's no way I can say words to do this book justice. Just read it, I totally promise you will not be disappointed. It may change your life. It will absolutely astound you, unless you yourself are a cutting edge biologist--and possibly even then. Just read it.

Excellent reading. As someone brought up in a Methodist church, this filled in a great many gaps for me. Heitzenrater does an excellent job of producing a readable work on an important topic. I encourage anyone calling themselves a Methodist to read this one cover to cover. The only - only - thing I wish were included, perhaps as an appendix, is a compare/contrast exercise on true Wesleyan Methodism and contemporary Methodism. (To be clear, I'm defending neither one as correct - just pointing out that there are some differences.) Certainly this will vary from church to church, but I think it would have been an illuminating discussion.Last, I am grateful to Heitzenrater for writing what I would describe as an agnostic, purely historical account. Almost never does Heitzenrater inject his own theology into the work. This is a work of non-fiction that allows the reader to draw their own conclusions rather that simply be spoon-fed the author's doctrines.

Very good synopsis of Wesley and the history of Methodism, especially as it relates directly to Wesley. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to know more about the history of John Wesley or the background and roots of the Methodist faith. I used it for background to teach a Sunday School class on this very topic.

Good detail and well research book. Information was very helpful in preparing for a lesson on the Wesley's.

This is the first place you should look for information about the history of Methodism and the rise of the Wesleyan movement. Heitzenrater does a phenomenal job at making the complex history approachable. A must for every Methodist!

A new police procedural, crime, and murder mystery from “across the pond”! A very disturbing killer, we learn his thoughts, but don’t know his name. Detective Inspector Sara Ramsey moves from Liverpool to a smaller county to get away from murder scenes like this. Her partner is Detective Sergeant Carla Jameson. Why would someone want to murder the elderly?The English culture is well described with all sorts of interesting verbiage running through the story. What’s a “whinge” or “lurgies”? The word “patch” has a different use, but we all know what “arse” and “cheeky” mean. 😚 No cliffhanger, but the future for the D.I. Is set up at the end, and one mystery remains unsolved! An engaging read.

One of the worst books I've read on Kindle. The main person, a DI with the British police, was clueless and naïve. If anyone has ever read a Nancy Drew book, this is the equivalent. I don't think the author knows much about police procedure. It felt more like I was reading about some high school girls or sorority sisters. Sounds harsh, but after reading police and mystery books for about 15 years, this was so disappointing. And it was odd that there were no men of importance in this story. I'm female and enjoy reading about both women and men in a story. Anyway, I was looking for a new author, but this definitely didn't fit the bill.

This is book 1 in a new series by M.A. Comley, author of British Poilice mystery/Suspense series. I love the new cast of characters and the Mystery is just twisted and twisty enough to satisfy my grit and gore needs. I believe I’ll be joining the list of fans for the new series. Definitely a must read series. It’s hard to find a first book that doesn’t have so much background included the story bogs down, this one doesn’t. A great beginning for a must-read series.

An excessive level of gore for a simplistic plot.i gave this three reluctantly but I am conscious that the style of writing is simply not to my taste as I find it overly descriptive of mundanities and lacking a flow to conversations. Coupled with a cast of characters from the school of "oh my gosh how terrible and just wait until i get my hands on the evil perpetrator" all of which are very samey this fails for me.I skim read the last half and i won't be following this author. If pushed for a recommendation I'd say don't bother even at the cheap price.

This book is very entertaining and the story moves along quite quickly. A police squad works together to solve a murder case. Along the way we learn about the lives of the various members of the squad.

This was one of the best good !! I absolutely love the characters and the suspense of the story kept me absolutely captivated the entire story. I litterly cannot wait to start the next book in Sara's series. Excellent work M A Comley !!!!!!

This rating is unusual for me regarding this author. Disappointing sequence of dawdling movement. Basically because of senseless murders, almost unbelievable in their progression. The plot and characters just drag until the end.
