This book was very straightforward. The Organizational effectiveness and behavior topics are written professionally, and are backed up with a variety of case studies and sources that lend validity to the book. I'm in a minor leadership position in a group I work with, and I've used a lot of the concepts from this book: specifically, the MAGIC concepts and how a proper psychological contract should be formed. It's helped my team members and I become much more effective in a short amount of time, by only changing a couple of the variables that influence effectiveness. I'm not going to sell this book: it's an incredible textbook on how to make an organization work impeccably. Just as Aldi has the Handbook of operations, I would use this book at the handbook of Employees.

I enjoy the book and the concepts it teaches about leadership and organizational structure. I find that understanding the idea of expectation alignment and the psychological contract that is formed between employers and employees to very applicable to all business settings. I also, like many on here, enjoyed the MAGIC acronym that summarizes key points to be able to help employees become engaged and stay engaged in your organization. Not only is it beneficial knowledge for managers and leaders, but also for employees so we can recognize why we might not feel engaged in our organizations and how we might be able to change that. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I feel it can be a repetitive read. I found myself thinking "Okay, okay, I get it. Let's move on to the point" more than once.

The most important section of this book for me was about the three contracts in any relationship: transactional, brand, and psychological. Before, I viewed the transactional contract as the only contract and it is extremely important as the foundation for my experience at a job. However, the fulfillment of my psychological contract has made the biggest difference in my engagement at my current job and disengagement at other jobs. I didn’t know that this was the difference until learning about it in this book.The only beef I had was that the writing style tended to be overly repetitive. That being said, the repitition was done deliberately to emphasize, and re-emphasize the major points of the author.

I will recommend this book to other corporate trainers, HR directors and leaders I work with. Practical advice with clear and relevant examples. A worthy investment of your time and money.Other reviewers have provided excellent detailed summaries of the book. I am simply adding my 5 star vote to express my opinion and gratitude for the work that the authors have done here. This book will advance the discussion about the evolving relationship between companies and employees. The three chapters about the Brand Contract, the Transactional Contract and the Psychological contract are treasures worth savoring. I have not found another book that clarifies these concepts as well as the authors have here.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to gain greater perspective on his/her current or future business working environment.While the book is geared towards managers and executives who have greater capability to implement change in their workplace, it can also be a powerful tool for any employee who is seeking better engagement in their job or has aspirations of future leadership roles.The concepts discussed in the book are easy to understand and apply because of the inclusion of many real-world comparisons and case studies that allow for deeper analysis.

This book is a great read if you're looking to better understand how to keep your employees engaged and increase productivity. I found the acronym MAGIC very interesting, it changed my perspective on what employees are looking for in a job. After reading this book I learned that employees want to do more than just punch the clock and show up to get paid, they want to be engaged in their work and make a meaningful difference! I also particularly enjoyed the concept of the three contracts that are present in any relationship. I found this very interesting, especially the psychological contract that exists whether we know it or not. This book teaches you how to recognize and deal with the contracts created between employee and employer. I feel that I have the knowledge to create a better work environment for employees if I am ever in a position to do so. The book was written in a personable way, it held my attention and had great examples and real world applications for the concepts. I would absolutely recommend to anyone!

I could never nail it down myself, but thanks to this book, I have a better understanding of myself and what I want to seek in a future career for myself, and how to get those around me to engage in organizations I care about. By helping others find meaning in what they do, giving them autonomy in doing their job, which allows them to grow and feel that they have an impact, they will create connection with the company and customers. This leads to a happy employee, a happy organization, and a happy customer. And that is the definition of success!

As she walks away from the throne, she discovers other opportunities in which she can still serve her home planet. Serving as a Republic Senator, Padme can be a representative for Naboo, and attempt to better the galaxy in the political ring.CHARACTER: A lot of us tend to paint Padme as a strong female character… but is she? Or is she just paranoid, relying on those around her to bail her out? The conclusion I’ve come to, is both. We know from The Phantom Menace that during the skirmish of Naboo with the Trade Federation, Queen Amadala has hand maidens, a body double, an altered voice for “Royalty’s sake and body double disguise.” This book pretty much shows us that she has always been paranoid, before the Trade Federation conflict.When Amadala makes her transition from Queen to Senator, it’s a bit tough for her make the adjustment. Padme uses the name Amadala as a stage name… an alias. When Padme is with her handmaidens behind closed doors, they talk about Amadala like she’s another person. It’s weird.Even as Senator, Padme has handmaidens, a body double, a security team, and even has someone tapping into the newsfeeds on Coruscant.OVERALL THOUGHTS: The book leads to a dead end. There is no climax. There is no real resolve. Some issues are tackled with the story… but overall, as a whole… the story leads to nothing. I don’t know if it’s supposed to tie into Clone Wars or if a second book is to be release… but the epilogue suggests that’s not going to happen. As I’m making my way through Clone Wars season one. I can’t recall any names that have been dropped in this book. I finished reading this book unsatisfied, underwhelmed, and a little confused.RATING: I give this book an F. I expected a powerful YA novel about Padme. I wanted to close this book and feel that she was a truly powerful and in control character. Yet, I close the book feeling that she was just paranoid, relying on others to help her gain success.I can’t recommend you read this book... But as a Star Wars diehard, it's best to go ahead and complete your library. And hey, you may like this book, everyone's taste is different.

As someone who saw The Phantom Menace in 1999 and immediately fell in love with Padme and all of her handmaidens, this is the book I've been hoping to read since I walked out of the movie theatre. The book features Padme as she must go from being the beloved Queen of a planet to a Senator representing that planet in a completely new arena. It is a book about change but also about love and friendship. It is a book that celebrates the traditionally feminine when much of our world would prefer to write off teenage girls as being silly. (Spoiler alert: they're not.) This book is a must read for any Padme fan and you'll never watch the Prequel Trilogy the same way ever again.

Though this isn't the best new Star Wars book it is far more enjoyable than I was expecting. We were reintroduced to old characters like Rush Clovis and Mina Bonteri as well as getting a fantastic look into the life of Padme as well as her handmaidens.

I just finished reading this book and it quickly became my favorite Star Wars book! It details the change from queen to senator that Padmé makes between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. It also goes into detail about the role and lives of her trusted Handmaidens who were advisors, aides, decoys, bodyguards, security personnel who we saw snippets during the movies. The second most used pov is Sabé who was the decoy in Ep 1 and is a great character, and one I hope we get more content in the future on.

Great new addition to Star Wars lore, grew up with the prequels and Clone Wars so this adds more to the story.

So boring that I couldn’t finish it. Returned the credit for Thrawn: Alliances instead. Narrator sucked as well.

This book is well researched, and very informative. But... what the author reveals is shocking and sad. I described to my college attending neice what Ms Wade said she found on campus, and she confirmed it in detail.This is a must-read for counselors and mental health professionals who work with teens and college kids. And if you have kids attending college now... this may scare you into bringing them home. A very important book indeed.

This text is an excellent examination of sexual culture on college campuses. Wade's voice is clear, accessible, and still maintains its basis in research-based knowledge. Wade manages to point out the downsides of hookup culture while still avoiding a tone of panic. Moreover, she acknowledges the "fun" of college life and sexual freedom (or at least, the potential for fun) that comes with it. The voices of students are always at the forefront of this text, as Wade uses their own language and stories to describe hookup culture and its relationship to students' lives. I would unequivocally recommend this as a text for First Year Seminar or similar classes, and similarly recommend it to anyone about to attend college.

This book was terrible! The author dosent seems to have an opinion on what shes researching, only talked to college students at universities, jumped around too much

You'll probably see some reviewers/readers griping about this book's length (short) relative to its price (full size); all I can say is that you'll get full value for your money.What Charles Glass is delivering here is a coherent analysis of what has happened in Syria since the first protestors assembled in Dera'a in early 2011 to demand that some teenagers who had scrawled anti-regime graffiti (and been arrested and tortured) be released. More rapidly than now seems credible, what seemed at first yet another example of the Arab Spring was seized on by a variety of factions, first by armed opponents to the regime of Syria's dictator/president Bashar al-Assad, and then by external forces of various kinds, who funded and armed those opponents. Britain, France, Russia, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the US -- all have been meddling in the fate of the country. As Glass writes, "would it be churlish to suggest that Syria's friends want something from Syria for themselves? You know the answers. So do the Syrians."One of the strengths of this slim book is that Glass is able to draw historical parallels (as and when they are appropriate) and point to historical reasons for Syrian wariness of Turkey, Britain and France, to name only a few countries. He can and does show how Syria's history as a multicultural society evolved, and why it is now collapsing as civil war inexorably reinforces sectarian tensions. He discusses such diverse topics as the collapse of order in Aleppo, the nature of the Alawites (the group to which the Assad family belongs) and the history of Armenians within Syria, and provides ample first-hand observations from those he has encountered during his various trips to the country over the years.If you're looking for a book about ISIS, this isn't it. (There are several perfectly good books on that broader topic, now.) If you're looking for a primer on what has happened within Syria, specifically, and why events there didn't follow the path they did in Tunisia, Libya or Egypt in 2011, but took such a violent and catastrophic turn, destabilizing the region still further, this succinct narrative is just what you'll need. It's admirably unbiased in that it holds almost everyone accountable and responsible, except for the average man in the street who, after decades of living in a totalitarian state, found himself in an arguably far worse and more perilous position: living in a chaotic world of civil war.Highly recommended for anyone trying to break through the noise and propaganda and above all, trying to obtain a broader historical context for it all, from Ottoman rule to the infamous Sykes-Picot agreement and onward.

In the Foreword of this brief book a comparison is made between the Syrian Conflict and the horrendous, atrocity-filled Thirty Years War. On reflection this is a fairly accurate idea with this reviewer seeing Russia playing the role of Spain (great resources but many commitments), Assad’s Syria that of the Empire, Turkey that of the Ottomans( more concerned with crushing their enemies than anything else), Israel that of Sweden (very strong militarily, but with limited resources), the United States that of a France but without a Richelieu (powerful, divided and reluctant to get directly involved but willing to subsidize allies), the Saudis and Gulf States that of the Dutch Republic (short on manpower, wealthy but not eager to spend); and the various militias and ISIS that of the various smaller factions; and both playing out against a background of religious conflict. In the course of time the Thirty Years War analogy is optimistic; as this was the last of the great religious struggles in Europe.A very strong point of this book is the detailed chronological essay on the conflict starting in 2011 and ending in the winter of 2015. This is an essential tool to try and follow this chaotic struggle.This is a very depressing read. The author, a descendant of Lebanese Christians, sees no side as strong enough on the ground to win and end the conflict. Repeated atrocities by the barbarians of ISIS are met with hand-wringing. The author ends this very depressing book by calling on the UN to take some action.The uncorrected proof of this book is called ‘Syria Burning- A Short History of Catastrophe’ in some places, and ‘Syria Burning- ISIS and the Death of the Arab Spring’ in others; perhaps this is because this is a revision of an earlier work published last year.

I have thrown out my other juice/ smoothie recipe books that I haven't used in years, and thus gave up on juicing/ smoothie making therefor letting my juicer and nutra- bullet collect dust - until I gave The Juice Generation a chance.These are fantastic recipes! I used to get free juice recipes from wherever and a few were complicated, or required quite a few ingredients that never ended up tasting good. Each recipe in The Juice Generation was easy to follow with a clear description of what you were to expect to taste. Many of the vegetables and fruits that were required in each recipe are to be reused in many other recipes, each with very different and delicious tastes and textures, so that you don't just use collard greens in just one juice or smoothie recipe, but in many, without dull or bland tasting results. This juice and smoothie recipe book deserves an award. Your money will be well spent on this book no doubt, you will not be disappointed. I haven't.

I tried wholeheartedly to drink green smoothies with Green Smoothie Girl because there was no waste but I never benefited from the drinks because I never felt good like I do with plain juicing, which removes all that fiber. I do have SIBO/IBS, so I assume I was not absorbing the vitamins and minerals because the fiber had to be digested. Also the taste of greens was not that good and while I dutifully swallowed it, it was not really tasty, but this book has given me a green drink that I ENJOY drinking. I cannot believe how good the juices taste and it opens up your own creativity once you realize it can be done. Like the book says, if you don't like celery, then you aren't going to like it in your drink. Although I like celery, I don't like much, so I just added a bit less celery.I have a LOT of health books and while there is not much new in the beginning of the book for me, the recipes are wonderful and the book is inspiring. I've drank more juice since the book arrived than I could've imagined, and even my teenage daughter is drinking them with me this time and not hiding. hahaAnd there are also other drinks, like ginger-pineapple-celery or orange-pineapple-beet drinks. Yum!He calls pureed fiber drinks "blended" drinks, not smoothies. Juices are made into smoothies by adding in coconut milk, banana or avocado, etc.

I've been juicing off and on for a number of years, and was looking for something to help me make tasty green juices that aren't so high in sugar. This is it! He takes you on a green journey, starting with lighter green and progressing to darker green in three phases. (There are also some non-green juices and smoothies, but the primary focus is on getting green.)He also does a really nice, simple job of explaining "why we love..." [carrots, kale, limes, etc.] in various sections of the book, and then features a handful of recipes with the spotlighted ingredient. I enjoyed reading those as a reminder of all the good stuff happening in my body as a result of drinking the juices. There is also some good info about "superfood" ingredients like goji berries, maca powder, etc. All-in-all, an excellent juicing and smoothie book. We've tried probably 20 or more of the recipes, and so far they are all quite good.

I love the recipes in the book. It certainly made my smoothies and juices more interesting and it is now way easier to plan our "meals".

This book explains the benefits of juicing and smoothies as well as many varied recipes that are easy to blend at home.I recommend it as a way to improve or enhance one's health as outlined in the book. It is a great way to consume a lot of vitamins, etc. in a small amount of time. Give it a try and see what it can do for you.

Was hoping there’d be more recipes for smoothies and bowls instead of 95% juices. Still good

I don't juice, but I do use my Vitamix for blended drinks. This book, although largely focused on juicing, still offers plenty of great recipes & tips for those who blend. In fact, it is by far my favorite book of its kind. As I said, there are so many great tips and informational items not only about the "food" but also about shopping, composting, cleanses, etc. And, I will often take the same ingredients listed for one of the juice recipes and just blend instead. The pictures are beautiful as well (bonus). This book offers phases... To bring the reader from sweeter drinks to healthier "greener" ones. I already run the gamut in terms of these drinks... But I think they'd be very helpful for those newer to juicing & blending.

I bought the book in hopes of juice suggestions for loosing weight. I got it! I have lost 15 pounds and still working on it. A little each week with goal of 70 pounds in 7 or 8 months. Loved the mixtures and it was so helpful and filled with useful information.
